Nigeria’s Flamingos will look to build on their stunning victory over defending champions DPR Korea when they face Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Thursday, 29 October.

Head coach Akeem Busari’s side will take on the Mexicans at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 2, in Salé, with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 pm Nigerian time (3:00 pm in Morocco). A quarter-final spot is at stake as both teams look to advance.

The Flamingos enter the knockout encounter with renewed confidence after ending DPR Korea’s remarkable unbeaten run in regulation time at the competition. Mexico, however, have also found their rhythm after recovering from an opening defeat to win their final two group matches.

Both teams finished second in their respective groups with six points from three matches, setting up a contest between two sides that have demonstrated resilience after difficult starts.

Nigeria’s journey to the Round of 16 began with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, despite Oluebube Umejiaku’s late goal giving the team hope of a comeback.

Busari’s players responded with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opening the scoring before Precious Oscar sealed the result in stoppage time.

Their biggest statement, however, came in their final group match against DPR Korea, where goals from Adegbuyi, Umejiaku and a stunning Kanyinsola Yusuf set piece secured an impressive 3-1 win over the two-time defending champions.

The result ended DPR Korea’s run of 18 consecutive matches without a regulation-time defeat at the U-17 Women’s World Cup, stretching back to 2018. It was a significant achievement for Nigeria and a timely boost ahead of the knockout stage.

Nigeria finished Group B with six points, scoring six goals and conceding four. But with the group stage now behind them, the Flamingos must reproduce that intensity against a Mexican side equally determined to reach the last eight.

Mexico also had to recover from an opening setback after losing 2-0 to Spain in their first Group F fixture.

They responded impressively against Chile, coming from behind to claim a 3-1 victory. Mia Urbano equalised after Chile had taken an early lead, before Citlalli Reyes and Nicole Jimenez completed the comeback.

Mexico then secured qualification with a narrow 1-0 win over Australia, with Reyes scoring the decisive goal in the 35th minute following an assist from Natalia Pérez. The victory gave Mexico six points and second place in Group F.

Reyes will be one of the players Nigeria must monitor closely. The Mexico captain made history against Australia by recording her 13th appearance at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, becoming the tournament’s all-time appearance leader. She has also scored twice in the current edition.

Her experience and ability to influence decisive moments could pose a threat to Nigeria, particularly if the Flamingos allow her too much space around the penalty area.

Nigeria and Mexico have met before at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, with the Flamingos recording a convincing 3-0 victory in the group stage of the 2014 edition in Costa Rica.

Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Uchenna Kanu added a second four minutes later, and Aminat Yakubu completed the win in the 58th minute.

While that result offers a positive historical reference for Nigeria, the two teams will field different generations of players in Morocco. Therefore, the 2014 encounter will have little to no bearing on Thursday’s outcome, with both sides needing to deliver on the day.

Nigeria’s attacking display against DPR Korea demonstrated the threat they can pose when their forwards find space and convert chances. Adegbuyi and Umejiaku have each scored twice at the tournament, while Yusuf also made a decisive contribution in the victory over the defending champions from deep.

Busari’s challenge will be to maintain that attacking sharpness without compromising their defensive organisation. Mexico showed against Chile that they can recover from setbacks, while their disciplined performance against Australia demonstrated their ability to protect a narrow lead.

Reyes’ movement and influence will demand close attention from Nigeria’s defenders and midfielders. The Flamingos must limit her opportunities to dictate attacks while staying alert to Mexico’s ability to exploit spaces in transition.

At the other end, Nigeria will need to make their possession and attacking combinations count. Wasteful finishing could prove costly in a knockout fixture where only a goal may separate the teams.

Busari has already stressed the importance of mentality, readiness, and taking chances, warning his players that once the knockout stage begins, there is no second opportunity.

Thursday’s encounter offers the Flamingos an opportunity to move a step closer to their ambition of winning the U-17 Women’s World Cup. Nigeria have previously reached the semi-finals and claimed bronze at the 2022 edition, giving the current squad a benchmark to pursue.

But Mexico will arrive with confidence after two consecutive victories, and the Flamingos cannot rely on their win over DPR Korea or their previous meeting with the Mexicans.

For Nigeria, the formula is straightforward: maintain the intensity that unsettled the defending champions, defend with discipline and take their opportunities in front of goal.

The Flamingos have already shown they can rise to a major challenge. Now they must prove their historic group-stage victory was no one-off as they battle Mexico for a place in the quarter-finals.
