Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa instructs officials to provide facilities to farmers

The APMC yard in Belagavi.

Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa found some irregularities in the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) during an inspection in Belagavi on October 29.

He saw weighing scales used by vegetable traders at the APMC and observed that there were some fraudulent practices.

He found none of the wholesale vegetable traders were issuing receipts for the produce sold, and middlemen were charging excessive commission. He instructed officials to ensure that such things did not happen.

He objected to lack of facilities for farmers. He noted that the clean drinking water unit was non-functional and that the canteen lacked hygiene. He said the canteen had effectively turned into a ‘garbage bin’ and reprimanded the yard secretary.

He spoke to farmers and porters, and gathered information from them. He saw that there was no rest areas for farmers or vehicle parking facilities. He directed the Labour Department to collect details of all workers across the shops within two days and ensure that they receive the government benefits to which they are entitled.

He said the toilet was not clean and did not have necessary facilities.

Officers of the Lokayukta, APMC, horticulture and labour welfare departments were present.
