Galamsey fight: Are illegal miners stronger than the military? – Awula Serwah asks

The Executive Director of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, says she does not believe illegal miners are more powerful than the Ghana Armed Forces, arguing that the military could play a stronger role in stopping illegal mining. I don’t think you want to tell me that the whole Ghana Armed Forces- we are not as strong as the illegal miners, so why are we not stopping it?,” she argued.

The Executive Director of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, says she does not believe illegal miners are more powerful than the Ghana Armed Forces, arguing that the military could play a stronger role in stopping illegal mining. She questioned why the country continues to struggle to contain the menace despite having a military capable of supporting efforts to enforce the law.

“So the fact of the matter is we know who they are, we know very well that when the chiefs, the political authority and the police commander come together to say no to illegal mining, it is very unlikely that illegal mining will thrive. We know who the players are. I don’t think you want to tell me that the whole Ghana Armed Forces- we are not as strong as the illegal miners, so why are we not stopping it?,” she argued.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, October 29, during a discussion on the effects of galamsey on the country, Ms Serwah called for decisive action to halt the destruction caused by illegal mining. She maintained that the fight against galamsey requires more than repeated discussions and public expressions of concern, insisting that authorities must demonstrate the political will to bring the practice to an end.
