Ghanaians are not angry enough about galamsey – Awula Serwah

The Executive Director of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, says Ghanaians are not angry enough about the destruction caused by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. Ms Serwah said Ghanaians must move beyond expressing concerns and organise activities that would put pressure on leaders to take concrete steps to stop illegal mining.

The Executive Director of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, says Ghanaians are not angry enough about the destruction caused by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

She says she wishes the public would express greater anger and organise themselves to compel political leaders to take decisive action to end the menace.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, October 29, during a discussion on the effects of illegal mining on the country, she stressed that her call was not for violence but for peaceful civic action that would generate the political will needed to tackle the problem.

"All I see is that Ghanaians are not angry enough; we are not angry enough. As you rightly said, when we eat our food, do we know where it comes from? The kenkey, do you know that corn absorbs poison?" she quizzed.

Ms Serwah said Ghanaians must move beyond expressing concerns and organise activities that would put pressure on leaders to take concrete steps to stop illegal mining.

"Ghanaians are being taken for a ride, and we are not angry enough. When I say we are not angry, I don't advocate violence, but we are not angry enough. A sit-down demonstration to say that you cannot continue poisoning us; stop this galamsey," she added.

She argued that stronger public mobilisation was necessary to ensure that the fight against galamsey translates into meaningful results.
