Man caught transporting liquor worth ₹25,000 in Hyderabad

The accused in the custody of Excise police in Hyderabad on Friday.

A 33-year-old man was caught allegedly transporting liquor meant for defence personnel, valued at ₹25,000, during vehicle checks near Vennelagadda lake in Quthbullapur on Friday. Excise officials seized nine bottles of non-duty liquor and launched an investigation to identify the defence employee suspected of supplying them.

The accused was identified as Immadi Naveen, 33, a resident of Hasmathpet in Bowenpally. Officials seized 6.75 litres of liquor from his possession.

According to Quthbullapur Excise Inspector T. Lakshman Goud, Naveen allegedly purchased the liquor from a defence employee near Sainikpuri and intended to resell it locally.

The alleged transaction came to light when an Excise team intercepted Naveen during routine vehicle inspections near Vennelagadda lake. During questioning, he reportedly disclosed the source of the liquor and his plans to sell it.

Officials said the liquor was meant for sale through defence canteens and had been transported without payment of the applicable excise duty. The investigation is now focused on identifying the defence employee allegedly involved in supplying the bottles.

Mr. Goud warned that procuring liquor from military canteens for unauthorised resale, transporting it or supplying it to others would attract legal action. He also cautioned against purchasing such liquor for private functions.

The Quthbullapur Excise officials registered a case and are investigating the source and intended distribution of the seized liquor.

A tender sporting moment with Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins

Paul Mitchell recalls snooker champion Alex Higgins tearfully celebrating his win with his young daughter While I enjoyed your photo feature with its “groundbreaking images [that] have upended assumptions about how men behave, dress and project power” (Muscles, metrosexuals and male tears: the 39 pictures that changed the way we see men (for good and for bad), 17 October), I felt that a more fitting sporting example than Gazza’s tears would have been Alex “Hurricane” Higgins at the 1982 World Snooker Championship. On winning the title, Higgins, a notoriously erratic and divisive figure, broke…
