The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) has cleared a Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) proposal to procure electricity on short-term basis for meeting an anticipated increase in electricity demand during the period from November 2026 to March 2027.

The total financial commitment of the proposed power purchase is ₹131.26 crore for procuring 164.16 million units (mu) at an average ₹8 per unit.

The commission has cleared a total procurement of 145 megawatt (MW) for November and 120 MW for December 2026, 240 MW each for January and February 2027, and 270 MW for March 2027.

The commission headed by T.K. Jose rejected the power procurement proposed for the month of April-2027 as the rate on offer was “excessively high.”

The KSEB had sought approval for short-term purchases through the Discovery of Efficient Electricity Price (DEEP) portal of the Union Power Ministry for meeting the deficit from October 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027. The power utility had projected a 17% to 23% increase in peak demand and 12% to 17% increase in energy demand for the period from November 2026 to May 2027.
