Bengaluru to get two reservoirs
In a move to strengthen Bengaluru’s water supply infrastructure, the State Cabinet on Thursday approved the construction of two water reservoirs at a combined cost of ₹61.50 crore.
The first reservoir, with a capacity of 50 million litres (50 ML), will be constructed at Kaval Byrasandra at a cost of ₹22.50 crore. The project is expected to benefit approximately 72,000 people, Bengaluru City Development Minister Krishna Byregowda told mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting.
The second reservoir, with a capacity of 22 million litres (22 ML), will be constructed in the Banashankari area at a cost of ₹39 crore. The additional storage capacity is expected to improve water distribution.
The Cabinet decided to grant ₹16.60 crore for preparing a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based master plan for Bengaluru and its surrounding urban areas, Mr. Gowda said. The initiative aims to support scientific and integrated urban planning in response to rapid urban expansion, population growth and increasing pressure on infrastructure.
The project will involve collecting geographical data, studying road connectivity, urban expansion and land use, and preparing information required for urban planning and infrastructure development, he said.
The Cabinet also approved the construction of a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 10 million litres per day (MLD) at Charakanahalli at a cost of ₹51.37 crore. The project aims to strengthen Bengaluru’s sewage management infrastructure and address the growing volume of wastewater generated in the area, Mr. Gowda said. The existing system includes a 40-MLD treatment facility. The additional plant is intended to augment treatment capacity.
