Retailers Say Skin Is Spring 23

Optimism, energy and a festive spirit filled New York Fashion Week, which has had enough solid collections, celebrities in the front rows, and a variety of venues to keep shoppers running around the city – and in the end, to feel that the city and its fashion industry are practically, if not fully, back in full swing.

Buyers ended the week exhausted, as is always the case after every fashion week. But this time around, they came away inspired by mainstream trends toward inclusivity, sexy and glamorous looks that reveal skin, and the general move toward dressing up again.

Other trends highlighted: pants are back, with high-volume styles everywhere on the catwalks; bright colors - from fiery red to lime green - dominated; Craftsmanship and artisanal touches were key, such as crochet or hand knits, and most importantly, individuality reigned, with designers offering women the ability to customize an outfit.

WWD asked several fashion merchants and executives from major retailers and websites to quote what they thought were the best collections on the spring 2023 catwalks, and to sum up the most important trends and the general mood of the season. Here's what they had to say:

Arielle Siboni, Womenswear Fashion Director, Bloomingdale's

Notable Collections: NYFW started with strong collections from Monse and Proenza Schouler. Other highlights were definitely Jason Wu, as well as Catherine Holstein's mix of couture, fringe, the cool girl snakeskins and leathers seen in Khaite, Jonathan Simkhai's cargos and hooks, and the way he uses the natural elements, and certainly Fe Noel with his fairy tale vision that finds new stories season after season in his collections.

Key Trends: Utility clothing was a dominant trend in many runways this week along with cargos , with trench coats and skirts being the key silhouettes. We still see shine in many collections; metals have been popular in accessories, and sequins chase and turn into sequins.

There were also lots of highlighter shades, especially lime greens and a variety of ocean blues , which gives the impression Fresh. Trousers are a key element of the season and are making belts popular again. Runways also tackled resort attire with crochet, fringe, coastal jewelry and gladiator sandals. Bubble hems, peplums, scallops and sheer fabrications also added feminine touches to the week.

The vibe: The festive mood was felt throughout every show and event, and a sense of optimism filled the air. Attendees felt invigorated and excited to celebrate fashion with friends and in person once again.
