Wike accuses Buhari and Amaechi of interfering in Rivers' 2019 election

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has accused President Muhammadu Buhari and former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi of interfering in the 2019 gubernatorial election in the state.

Wike made the statement yesterday during a launching ceremony for the construction of internal roads in Igwuruta, the state's Ikwerre Local Council, hosted by the Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu.

He said: "I heard Mr. President say yesterday that he will not interfere (in the 2023 election). He told the governors that he would not interfere. In the other (2019), you interfered by sending people to come and finish us at Rivers State.

“Thank you, Mr. President, for saying that you will not interfere or intimidate anyone, which means there is no way for your party.

"Of course he intervened, the last time, using the army, through the former transport minister. But people stood up and said no, it's not going to happen.

"I thank Mr. President for wanting to leave a legacy of free and fair elections." Expressing doubts over the promise of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to give Nigerians a free and fair election, Wike said, “My problem is INEC, if they will do what they say they will. would do. They make promises. I don't know if they will stick to it. If INEC delivers on its promise that Nigeria will get a better election, I will be so happy. Everyone will see with his eyes. Abuja does not vote; it's the people here who will vote.”

Wike also lambasted a certain South-South leader, whom he accused of being selfish. He said, “What will they say to their children; people who would like to eat their own share, eat their children's share, and eat their grandchildren's share? When someone at the age of seventy is lobbying to become chief of staff, what will their own children be lobbying for?"
