< p>Commenting on the results, Savanta director of policy research, Chris Hopkins, said: "Just another normal day in British politics finds the country under its fourth chancellor in as many months after Truss sacked Kwarteng.

"While the public thinks this is the right move, they have no forgiveness for the Prime Minister, and his actions today appear to have done little to improve his standing among op inions, his own deputies or the markets."

"It seems Truss has very few places to go now. Although she's trying to pull through, she increasingly feels like her withdrawal is a case of "when" and not "if".

"However, given the Tory polls - our latest showed a lead - his withdrawal will only intensify calls for a general election.

"For Tory MPs right now it's like turkeys voting for Christmas ."
