The Virtual Beings Summit showcases how AI simulations will change entertainment (June 7 in SF)

The fifth annual Virtual Beings Summit: Simulations will take place June 7 in San Francisco. The event will focus on the big trend around AI simulations, where intelligent AI-powered characters populate virtual worlds.

These characters can live their lives and continue to thrive in these virtual worlds even if they are not controlled by humans, Fable Studio CEO Edward Saatchi said in an interview with GamesBeat. Saatchi is at the forefront of this trend as curator of the Virtual Beings Summit.

“The thesis this year is that single-agent chatbots have reached their peak,” said Saatchi. “They are trivialized and there are hundreds of them. And it's ultimately boring. When talking to these AIs, they appear when you talk to them. they have no real life. And so they can't sympathize with you. They can't tell you what's going on in their life and their day because they don't exist. And so I've gathered some of the people I think are the most interesting around simulations to talk about it."

For chatbots, Saatchi believed that virtual beings created to talk with us deserved to have real lives.

"It's different from just a backstory, where you write their world down like a page of text, and then that's who they are," Saatchi said. “They must actually have existed in virtual life, exist in space and time, and they must exist in the context of a society like families. And they must be respected to truly have autonomy within these worlds. Now the technology is here."
