2026 is off to a great start, as the best streaming services are full of new horror movies to help you beat the January blues.
If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to watch more horror movies, I’m here to help. There are many new original films, including one Texas chain saw a documentary about the massacre and a new Netflix mystery, as well as some classics to revisit.
Marshmallow
MARSHMALLOW | Official Trailer (2025) – YouTube
Look on it
Or: Shivers (United States)
When: January 1
Marshmallow is a new entry in Shudder’s original library, and it’s a must-have for those who love spooky campfire tales.
Following a traumatic experience involving his grandfather, a young boy named Morgan is sent to summer camp. He is plagued by nightmares and visions involving fear of water and drowning, and soon hears the story of a doctor who takes children in at night and performs horrible operations on them in the basement of his apartment building.
But does this doctor just a story, or is it real? You will have to watch and find out.
Misery
MISERY (1990) | Official trailer | MGM Studios – YouTube
Look on it
Or: Peacock (United States); Prime Video (UK, Australia)
When: January 1
Misery is my favorite Stephen King novel, and the film adaptation is just as terrifying. Kathy Bates delivers a chilling performance as Annie Wilkes, a woman who saves author Paul Sheldon from a car accident. She happens to be a nurse. And Paul’s number one fan, so what could go wrong?
A lot, in fact. When she discovers that he has just killed her favorite character, she is not happy at all. And things go horribly wrong. This is largely a single location film, focused entirely on Annie’s house where Paul is captive, and you will be on the edge of your seat.
Body Body Body
Body Body Body | Official HD Trailer | A24 – YouTube
Look on it
Or: HBO Max (United States); Prime Video (UK); 7Plus (Australia)
When: January 1
2022 Body Body Body is now available on HBO Max, and it’s worth checking out. This A24 horror comedy was a hit with critics, with plenty of laughs and scares.
The film follows a group of wealthy young adults who throw a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, where they play a board game called Bodies Bodies Bodies. This is going terribly wrong, naturally. You’ll have fun trying to figure out why someone ended up dying for real, but you might be surprised by the outcome.
This joins many other great A24 horrors streaming on Max, so be sure to check out the streamer’s extensive library of films.
Shout
CRI | Official trailer | Paramount Movies – YouTube
Look on it
Or: Paramount+ (worldwide)
When: January 1
I look Shout once a year, and I could bring forward my annual rewatch now that it’s streaming on Paramount+. Wes Craven’s horror comedy is iconic for a reason and it has inspired a new breed of horror fans. With Shout 7 on the way this year, the slasher franchise is still going strong.
Set in the fictional town of Woodsboro, high school students are targeted by a masked serial killer. One in particular, Sidney, is particularly frightened because it takes place on the anniversary of her mother’s murder.
The whole thing Shout the franchise is on Paramount+ if you also want to binge-watch them.
Lake of Bones
Bone Lake – Official Trailer (2025) – YouTube
Look on it
Or: Netflix (United States); rent or buy (UK, AU)
When: January 15
I love remote getaways, don’t you? Unfortunately, this seems to be the premise of many horror films, which is far from idyllic.
The new Netflix movie Lake of Bones follows Diego and Sage, who spend a romantic vacation at a secluded lakeside estate. Everything is quickly disrupted when they are forced to share a mansion with a mysterious and attractive couple, and everything turns into a “nightmarish maze of sex, lies and manipulation”, according to the plot.
It currently looks like it’s only coming to US Netflix, but hopefully other territories will receive it soon.
Chain reactions
Chain Reactions – Official Trailer (2025) Patton Oswalt, Stephen King – YouTube
Look on it
Or: Shudder (US, Australia)
When: January 16
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the most famous horror films of all time, and this documentary delves into its impact.
Artists Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Stephen King and Karyn Kusama were all interviewed for this film, where they discuss what Tobe Hooper’s film means to them.
It’s a fun addition to Shudder this month, and I can’t wait to check it out.
The Funhouse
Or: Prime Video (United States); rent or buy (US, AU)
When: January 31
Another Tobe Hooper movie is coming at the end of January, and if you haven’t seen it The Funhousenow is the perfect time. He has just joined Prime Video’s horror lineup.
This slasher is as good as The Texas Chainsaw Massacreand follows four teenagers who find themselves trapped on a ghost train during a traveling carnival and are soon stalked by a killer.
It’s a solid 80s slasher and will make you fear carnivals, trust me.
