There are plenty of things to do in Izmir, a city full of history, delicious food, fantastic landscapes and vibrant nightlife. There is more to do Türkiye than simple seaside resorts; it’s home to a range of fantastic cities to explore, and one of my favorites is Izmir.

As the country’s third-largest city, Izmir has a laid-back, student vibe, but it’s far from lacking in substance.

My husband is from Aydin, about an hour’s drive from Izmir. As such, we go there often and occasionally spend a few days or even a month there.

It’s such an endearing place, I never want to leave it, and since there are so many places to see in Izmir, you never get bored. It’s easy to understand why it’s such a unmissable destination.

This whole part of Türkiye is like an open-air museum, with lots of history from Greek times to discover. One of the most popular attractions in Izmir is near Ephesusone of my favorite places in the world.

By the end of this guide, I hope you will have fallen in love with the idea of visiting Izmir, just as much as I love it in real life.

Best Things to Do in Izmir

View of Izmir Turley from the sea in the afternoon, with city lights, buildings and highways.

First of all: Izmir is a big city, so you will have to use public transport, taxis or to drive to move around. Don’t worry, because this is all quite simple to do. The best sights in Izmir are in the Alsancak/Konak region, but there are many other areas worth exploring.

There are some great day trips just outside the city and with so much to do in Izmir itself, you’ll want to narrow down your choices. This is where my practical tips come in handy!

1. Konak Square and Izmir Clock Tower

An Izmir clock tower stands in the center of the park with trees and a few passers-by.

One of the most famous places to visit in Izmir is Konak Squarewhich is also home to the famous Izmir Clock Towerbuilt in 1901. The square itself is a lively place where people gather to chat, children play and street musicians perform. It’s a busy part of town and the clock tower is always surrounded by lots of people taking photos.

I was shocked to see how well preserved the tower is and how intricate its design is. This is definitely one of the best free things to do in Izmir, and the fact that there are so many delicious streets food the vendors around only add to the attraction.

If you visit Izmir on a sunny day, I recommend grabbing a coffee, sitting here and just enjoying the hustle and bustle happening around you. However, you can also take a Izmir City Tour which stops at the clock tower. Click here for more details.

Address: Kemeraltı Bazaar, 35360 Konak/Izmir

2. Walk along the Kordon

A walk into the bay and a long gap away are the bus route and buildings.

One of Izmir’s main attractions is the Kordon, a 1.5 km long waterfront promenade dating from the 1850s and running from alsancak while passing the city center. This is one of the coolest things to do in Izmir, especially on a sunny day.

You’ll see many locals walking around and enjoying the weather, but you can also rent a bike (there are bike paths), try street food, picnic on the lawns, or take the old-fashioned tram. It’s such a picturesque area, so taking a few photos of your surroundings is a must.

Address: Alsancak, 35250 Konak/Izmir

3. Visit Kemeraltı Bazaar

A bazaar with colorful fabrics for sale to crowded customers.

One of the top things to see in downtown Izmir is Kemeralti Bazaar – a huge open market where you can buy just about anything you can think of. It is also a great place to buy traditional souvenirs, such as Turkish delights, spices and textiles.

From my personal experience, this area is incredibly busy and it is important to look after your children if you are traveling with family; the bazaar is narrow and winding, and it is very easy to get lost.

Also keep your bag here; It’s not dangerous, but it is a hot spot for pickpockets, and it’s better to be safe than sorry by taking precautions.

Among all the things to do in Izmir, this is one of the most authentic. You will have to haggle, so start practicing now and you will enjoy the best deals to take home.

Address: 35360 Konak/Izmir

4. A day trip to Ephesus

An image of the historic structure of Ephesus at night and surrounded by faint yellow light.

I’ve been to many places in Türkiye and most of them blew me away, but Ephesus was a totally different beast. This place is so amazing and incredibly beautiful, and it is one of the best places to visit near Izmir.

Dating from the 10th century BC, it was one of the most important and busiest cities of its time, and its ruins are still extremely well preserved today.

A lot full-day and half-day excursions Go to Ephesus from Izmir and you will usually have a guide with you to help you understand what you are seeing. Otherwise, there are information boards everywhere, but I highly recommend taking your time here. It’s a huge space and can get very crowded during the summer months. Click here for tour information.

If you can, head to Ephesus during the shoulder months or even winter. There is very little shade, which makes visiting during the peak summer months quite uncomfortable. It’s such a wonderful place that you don’t want time to ruin it.

Address: Acarlar, Ruins of Ephesus, 35920 Selçuk/Izmir

5. Buy from Bornova Forum

coffee Izmir

If you feel like spending a little money, a visit to Forum Bornova is one of the best things to do in Izmir. Filled with national and international stores, you’ll find everything you’re looking for here, and probably much more.

This is an open-air shopping center, always decorated for various events, especially New Year’s Eve. There are often exhibitions and plenty of things to do at any time. It’s also full of restaurants and cafes, so you can take your time browsing and enjoy a few stops along the way.

Address: Kazimdirik, 372. Street. No. 75, 35100 Bornova/Izmir

6. Eat street food in Alsancak

street food

Trying local street food is one of my favorite things to do no matter where I am in the world, but I’ve found some fantastic options in Alsancak. This part of town is lively and vibrant no matter the time of day, so you’re sure to find plenty of different dishes to suit your taste.

Be sure to try Izmir’s famous bombası; Çelebi Bakery Products is the best place to go (there’s always a huge queue outside, which says a lot!). And a word of advice: if you order it warm, be patient – don’t be like me and burn your mouth! It’s filled with chocolate and will definitely give you a sugar rush.

You will find doner kebabs, among other types of kebabs, sweet corn, Börek, lahmacun, soup, toast… the list goes on. One of the most fun things to do in Izmir is to take the Izmir City Food Tour where you can refuel along the way. Click here for more details.

Address: 35220 Konak/Izmir

7. Visit the Hisar Mosque

A historic mosque and a clear blue sky.

Built between 1592 and 1598, Hisar Mosque is one of the best places to visit in Izmir, and it is right in the heart of the city center. During the Ottoman era, it was the largest mosque in the city, and it still stands proud today, stunningly beautiful in its architecture.

Above the main gate you will see the famous inscription in gold leaf: “He who enters this way will be safe”. The mosque complex is large and finely decorated. It’s a serene and calm place in the middle of the city and a wonderful place to explore whether you’ve ever been to a mosque or not.

If you are unfamiliar with mosque etiquette, you will need to wear respectable clothing (no shorts or tank tops). You will need to cover your head with a scarf or pashmina if you are a woman, and everyone must take off their shoes, so make sure you have socks with you. Once inside, spend some time in quiet contemplation and admire the beautiful architecture.

Address: Konak, 904, street no. 52, 35250 Konak/Izmir

8. Agora Open Air Museum

A historic path in the shape of an ancient stone arch. In the center there is a small water channel.

The Izmir region and its surroundings are full of history and much of it is open for exploration. To visit Agora Open Air Museum is one of the best things to do in Izmir for families because it is very large and easy to navigate. Kids will love visiting the ruins and hiding around the columns while learning something along the way.

I love old things like this and particularly enjoyed visiting this huge museum. It is also conveniently located, unlike Ephesus where you have to travel.

It was built in the 4th century by the Greeks but, like many buildings from that era, it was devastated by an earthquake. However, Roman Emperor Aurelius demanded that it be rebuilt and it subsequently became one of the most important Roman sites.

This is one of the quickest things to see in Izmir; about 1.5 hours is enough, so you can easily combine this with something else to fill your day.

Address: Yeni, Tarik Sari Street No. 16, 35240 Konak/Izmir

9. Experience the sunset from Pasaport

The view of the sea, the structure of the building and the setting sky.

While strolling along the Kordon, one of the best things to do in Izmir for couples is to stop at sunset and admire the golden hues of Pasaport Pier. There are lots of small cafes and restaurants around, so you can combine them with your evening meal, but the view is definitely something special.

I had a delicious meal at Restaurant Margaux watching the sun go down, and it was definitely an unforgettable evening. But even if you don’t want to stop to eat, it’s a great idea to simply Enjoy sitting back and watching the incredible spectacle of Mother Nature. As for what to see in Izmir, I highly recommend it as a stop, and it’s another place you’ll need your camera.

Address: Akdeniz, Passport Pier, 35210 Konak/Izmir

10. Izmir Historical Elevator Building

Beautiful night view of Izmir with historical elevator, sea and buildings.

One of the most unique things to do in Izmir will also give you plenty of incredible views at the same time. The historic elevator building It might not seem like much, but trust me, it’s hands down one of the best things to do in Izmir.

The building itself dates from 1907, when a Jewish businessman called Nesim Levi decided to create the elevator to make it easier for people to move from one street to another. Nowadays, the building offers the most breathtaking and panoramic view of all of Izmir, and on a clear day you can see for miles. This is by far one of my favorite views.

There is a restaurant at the top, and it’s a great place to go if you’re looking for a romantic evening with your partner. However, it’s a good idea to book a table in advance – when I went it was extremely busy and I was lucky to get a table.

Address: Turgut Reis, damn it. Nihatbey CD. 76/A, 35000 Konak/Izmir

11. Izmir Museum of Archeology and Ethnography

A close-up of an ancient Greek text from Ephesus, Turkey.

I love museums, and this one is full of really interesting artifacts dating back to the Bronze Age. If you have a rainy day during your visit, go to Izmir Museum of Archeology and Ethnography as it is one of the best things to do in Izmir, rain or shine. Slightly older children, perhaps ages 10 and up, will enjoy exploring this museum.

For me, the most interesting piece was the marble statue of Androklos, said to have belonged to the founder of the neighboring town. Ephesus. There are lots of statues recovered from shipwrecks around, and I spent a good two hours exploring this huge museum and its pieces. I also felt like I really learned something.

As one of Izmir’s main tourist attractions, it can get very busy here, especially during weekends and public holidays. I recommend going early and then spending the rest of the day exploring the surrounding area.

Address: Konak District, Bahri Baba Park, Halil Rıfat Paşa Cd. No:4, 35260 Konak/Izmir

12. Enjoy Nature at Inciraltı Kent Ormanı

Inciralti town forest Aerial view, green island, mountains and surrounded by sea.

I stumbled upon Inciraltı Kent Ormanı, a wonderful natural area, but I’m so glad I did. If you visit on a balmy day and the sun is shining, this is one of the best things to do near Izmir, and so many people don’t even know it exists! However, you’ll have to walk a fair distance or take a taxi to find it – it’s at the very end of the Kordon, so I recommend taking a taxi to save your feet.

Inciralti Urban Forest is located in Balçova, where you will also find a small pebble beach, so bring your swimsuit. The forest itself is lush and green, with plenty of shade on hot days. There are small huts where you can picnic and even barbecue areas you can enjoy, but read the signs and follow the rules to avoid fire risks.

For me, it is one of the best hidden gems to see in Izmir, where you can see the whole city, up to Alsancak. Pack comfortable shoes for any hikes you do, but breathing in the fresh forest air is a real treat.

Address: Bahçeşehir, Disabled People Mrk. İçi Yolu, 35330 Balçova/Izmir

13. Visit the Atatürk Museum

An open walking field with crowded people, a historical Atatürk museum, a flag of Turkey and a cloudy blue sky.

A visit to Ataturk Museum should definitely be on your list of things to do in Izmir. Mustafa Kemal Ataturkthe founder of the Turkish Republic, is the most important figure in Turkish history. You will find monuments dedicated to him across the country, but this particular museum helps you learn a lot about his life and his importance to the Turkish people.

This museum is also centrally located in Konak, so it’s easy to combine a trip here with several locations for a full day in Izmir. For example, you could walk along the Kordon, go to this museum, visit Konak Square and the clock tower in one day, and still have time to wander around.

I really enjoyed this museum and learned a lot. The building itself is also important because it is where Atatürk himself stayed in Izmir. Inside you will find objects that will not only tell you who Atatürk was, but also personal items that will help you learn more about him.

Address: Alsancak Mh., Gündüğdu Caddesi No:242, 35220 Konak/Izmir

14. Bargaining at Kızlarağası Hostel

Izmir merchant

Shopping is always fun, but when you have to bargain for your purchases, it’s even better. Who knows what memories you will leave with? Kizlarağası Hostel dates back to Ottoman times, in 1744, and the exterior architecture is quite impressive, but inside you’ll find a treasure trove of shopping opportunities.

Now, I’m not a natural bargainer; It took me a while to build my confidence, but now I can negotiate with the best of them. The great thing about this particular place is that it’s really easy to follow and once inside you’ll know you’re in an atmospheric and historic place.

This is another place that I found by chance and I believe that just walking around this place is one of the best things to do in Izmir. You find so many things that seem hidden and will definitely enhance your visit.

Address: History Kızlarağası Inn Inn Management 871 Sokak No:19/106 Hisarönü, 35250 Konak/Izmir

15. Enjoy Izmir’s vibrant nightlife

At night there are buildings, a bench and a stone road.

No matter what type of night out you’re looking for, there are so many things to do in Izmir at night. If you are looking for a relaxing time, head to Kordon and just walk around to enjoy the calm ambiance and the view. If you want something a little more dynamic, head to Alsancak or Bornova. In these areas you will find many bars, restaurants, cafes, cocktail bars and nightclubs.

I always stay in Alsancak because it’s very central, but also because the nightlife is very good. Pub Éko is one of my favorite places to go in the evening and their bar snacks are delicious too. World Coffee is another great place, and it’s always a good night to Molly Malone’s Irish Pub.

Address: Alsancak, 35220 Konak/Izmir

PRIME!

Listing just 15 fun things to do in Izmir was too difficult – here’s an extra one for you! If you’re looking for an epic day trip, Pamukkale is most likely one of most picturesque places in Türkiye. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for a carbonate mineral left over from flowing thermal water – it looks super white!

During this trip From Izmir, you will visit Pamukkale and discover the nearby ancient city of Hierapolis. It’s a full day trip, but it’s worth it for the views.

The first time I visited Izmir, I was surprised how beautiful it is. I was so used to spending time Istanbul that I didn’t think any other city could attract me so much, but Izmir managed to do it. I’m sure it will be the same story for you.
