I was driving, but I couldn’t see. My glasses were stained. Gray spots blurred the lenses through which I saw life. I tried to redirect my eyes to the yellow and white lines. Yet I kept coming back to the task.
When vision is blocked, it is difficult to move forward. A blind person cannot move forward easily.
Think about times you have encountered these situations:
Snow on your windshield…
The rain is falling…
A foggy front window…
How can you go when you can’t see?
You know, spiritual blindness is a lot like natural blindness.
We are so caught up in something that we cannot see God in anything.
- Offense tarnishes our perspective of love.
- Critical thinking blocks potential relationships.
- Bitterness turns us inward because we have been so hurt.
- Jealousy erases a friend’s valid attempt to love us.
- Envy makes us hate the people God has called us to love.
- Comparing makes us proud – or hateful – of ourselves.
- Placing too much emphasis on difficult times makes us believe that our future is doom and gloom. “Everything is going to turn out horribly,” we think.
What do we do about this eye situation?
First, we can begin by praying this scripture over ourselves:
“[I pray] than the eyes of your heart [the very center and core of your being] can be illuminated [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit]so that you know and cherish hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which He has called you: the riches of His glorious inheritance among the saints (God’s people). (Ephesians 1:18)
When God begins to shine a light on the distractions, begin to pay attention to them.
Many of us don’t even realize how smudged our life lenses are. We move around without realizing it. But as soon as we begin to see, we truly begin to see. Then hope returns. The wait returns. Joy surfaces.
You know, it’s easy to see spots in other people’s eyes. But ask Him to show you the spots on yours, and then let the light of the Holy Spirit guide you on His path, as you turn away from what hinders you.
Prayer: Father, open the eyes of our heart; we don’t want to be blind. The Pharisees were called “blind guides” by Jesus. Let this not be true for us. Let us not be the blind leading the blind, but rather those who walk with hearts enlightened and illuminated by your truth, love and grace. May we know the riches of our glorious inheritance in You. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
