Sunday January 11 – GAA results round-up
An action-packed Sunday across the inter-county competitions and All-Ireland club finals provided plenty of talking points, with silverware on the line at Croke Park and strong statements made in the early season cups.
Dr. McKenna Cup
Tyrone edged out Down in Pomeroy, winning 0-18 to 1-11 in a close contest. The Red Hands controlled long periods but were kept honest by a Down team who stayed in touch throughout.
Monaghan beat Fermanagh at Castleblayney, securing a 1-17 to 3-8 victory. Although Fermanagh found the net on three occasions, Monaghan’s consistency in front of goal proved decisive.
Donegal were comfortable winners at Antrim, winning 1-15 to 0-7 at Cargin, a result which underlined their early season sharpness.
Connacht FBD League
Mayo continued their good start with an impressive 0-22 to 1-6 victory over Roscommon at Dr Hyde Park. The Connacht champions dominated possession and pressure on the scoreboard from start to finish.
Munster Hurling League
Tipperary enjoyed a strong outing in Tralee, beating Kerry 1-16 to 1-7 at Austin Stack Park. The sharper touch and movement of the Prime Minister’s men revealed itself as the match progressed.
McGrath Cup
Kerry produced a ruthless performance in Killarney, dismantling Waterford 1-27 to 0-1 at Dr Crokes. From the start, it was a one-sided affair.
Cork were beaten by Limerick at Páirc Uí Rinn, as the Munster champions lost 3-11 to 0-15, their goal threat proving the difference.
Walsh Cup
Dublin qualified for the final after a 3-24 to 2-14 win over Westmeath at Parnell Park, while Galway impressed with a solid 2-22 to 0-16 win over Offaly at Ballinasloe.
In the Shield semi-final, Kilkenny won 2-17 to 0-10 against Laois at Rathdowney, while Kildare beat Antrim 0-17 to 2-10 at Hawkfield.
All-Ireland Club Finals
In Croke Park, An Ghaeltacht (Kerry) won the intermediate football title with a 0-12 to 0-6 victory over Glenullin (Derry), producing a disciplined display to win silverware.
In the junior grade, Ballymacelligott (Kerry) completed a memorable day for the county by beating Clogher Éire Óg (Tyrone) 1-16 to 0-13 to claim the All-Ireland crown.
