Dark souls‘The franchise can be done and dusted. A fourth entry would not be completely out of reach, but the likelihood of a Dark Souls 4 decreases with each new day and each new game or IP FromSoftware it’s announced. Fortunately, fans have mods to produce unofficial expansion-style content that can still satisfy them, like Daughters of Ash.
Created by Grimrukh and available on Nexus ModsDaughters of Ash is described as a “massive reimagining and expansion of Dark Souls.” So, even if it is not a sequel, nor an official expansion or a batch of new content, Daughters of Ash is nonetheless a godsend for Dark souls fans who were desperate for a reason to replay the original game, as they come to terms with the idea that there may never be Dark Souls 4 in the future of FromSoftware.
Dark Souls 4 will probably never happen
Dark souls has continued for three games, each with their own amazing DLCs, and perhaps we couldn’t realistically ask for much more. Indeed, Dark souls fans should not be too greedy, when some of them FromSoftware’s most popular gamesnamely Transmitted by blood And Axe: Shadows Die Twiceare only one-off payments without any promise of follow-up.
Regardless, FromSoftware is benefiting from the immense success of Ancient Ring and used that success to propel him into a multiplayer-focused business with Night Reign of the Elder Ring. Then, scheduled for this year, FromSoftware’s next game is Bloods of Twilightan online PvPvE game.
It’s unclear when FromSoftware’s next Soulslike game will be released, if it returns to linear level design, or decides to stick with it. Ancient Ringopen-world level designalthough it is almost guaranteed that players will have already seen a Dark Souls 4 between the exit of Dark Souls 3– three months less than 10 years ago now, in 2016 – and today, if we ever wanted to come to fruition.
At least we have daughters of ashes
Meanwhile, Daughters of Ash has been around for quite a long time and has cemented its place as one of best Dark souls mods for anyone who wants expansion-type content that revises (or “remixes”) the original experience in the following ways:
- New game progression (including “new world-changing events, key items, and unexpected paths”)
- New bosses and enemies (including “enemies restored from cut content”)
- New NPCs and storylines (including “new characters with all-new questlines, whose paths will cross in many unpredictable ways”)
- New weapons, items, and mechanics (including “new weapons with entirely new abilities, some of which may require extensive knowledge to master”)
- Expanded story (including “new item descriptions and game events”)
- New secrets (including “hidden content”)
Modder Grimrukh also appears to be working on a Dark souls mod called Nightfall this would behave as a “full fan-made sequel”, although only a demo was released with no clear timetable on when fans could anticipate its release. Expect this sooner than Dark Souls 4 However.
