Madonna would be disconcerted by her ex, Sean Penne‘s, natural aging.
The singer, who once called the actor the love of her life, is reportedly not used to this reality, especially given her own efforts to maintain a youthful appearance over the years.
Madonna and Penn were married from 1985 to 1989 after meeting while filming her music video “Material Girl.” Despite their volatile union, the two remained loosely in touch over the years.

More than four decades have passed since Madonna split from her ex, Sean Penn, and the two have both aged and are now in their 60s.
While Penn’s recent public appearances have shown her embracing natural aging by letting her hair go completely gray and appearing unconcerned about her growing wrinkles, Madonna has chosen the path of rewriting the rules of beauty and defying time itself with what appear to be multiple cosmetic procedures.
However, for Madonna, seeing Penn allow himself to age naturally was a shock to her, one that she is still dealing with.
“He’s not Sean as she remembers him,” a source said of the singer who recently saw her ex, according to a report. “She couldn’t believe it – natural aging, gray hair… It’s just not her Sean.”

“She’s used to controlling every look, every image,” the source added. “Seeing Sean age naturally – without filters or Hollywood gimmicks – was a shock to her system. She’s not used to that reality.”

Penn’s natural aging isn’t the only thing that seems to shock Madonna, as recent reports have revealed that she doesn’t agree with his lifestyle.
The 65-year-old actor was seen smoking several times during the 2026 Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills on Sunday (January 11).
Although he was approached three times by event staff and asked to put out his cigarette, he allegedly refused to comply and continued to behave in this way.
Seeing Penn act this way and remain firmly entrenched in his smoking habits deeply worried Madonna.
“It’s brutal to see what Sean is doing to himself right now. He seems to be in self-destruct mode,” a source recently said. Globe. “He acts like he’s bulletproof, but it’s obvious this lifestyle is taking a huge toll on him.”

Madonna’s marriage to Penn lasted only four years after they met on the set of “Material Girl” in 1985.
Although the marriage was quite tumultuous, the singer was reportedly “truly in love” with the actor throughout the marriage, according to Sharon Oreck, who produced the clip.
“She was genuinely in love with him, but it was like the attraction between the two of them was fueled by the audience. He was the wannabe movie star, she was the wannabe rock star, and the audience was demanding that they get together,” the director said in an archival audio recording featured in the documentary about the pop goddess “Becoming Madonna.”
“It was like a bomb had gone off,” Oreck said of the duo’s romance. “America’s Bad Boy and Bad Girl.”

Sean Penn’s Response to Iconic Singer’s ‘Love Of My Life’ Remark

Madonna appeared to hint that she still had affection for Penn when she was seen describing him as the love of her life in her documentary.
However, it seems the actor feels differently, as he candidly responded to that statement during an appearance on Louis Theroux’s podcast in mid-2025, according to the Daily Mail.
“I remember what she said,” Penn said of that remark when his host asked if he remembered it from the documentary.
He added: “She’s very nice. Look, she’s been a good friend for many years.”

He went on to suggest that their marriage was a mistake despite the whirlwind relationship they had.
“It didn’t take us long to realize that we had mistaken a good first date for a marriage partner,” the actor said.
Penn added: “It didn’t take long for us to get back together after our divorce, maybe a year, into a friendship. I have a lot of good memories of it – it’s not just prison.”
“But there was a lot of drinking, and she would rightly blame me for that,” he added of his relationship with Madonna.
