Rotten Tomatoes has revealed the first Tomatometer score for Kaley Cuoco’s highly anticipated new mystery thriller, Disappeared. In Disappearedthe world of archaeologist Alice Munroe (Cuoco) is turned upside down when her longtime boyfriend, Tom (Sam Claflin), mysteriously disappears from a train headed to Marseille. When her search for Tom threatens to destroy their relationship and uncover a dark conspiracy, Alice becomes more determined than ever to uncover the truth.
Following the success of her Emmy-nominated role in the darkly comedic thriller The flight attendant and its role in the recent canceled mystery comedy Based on a true story, Disappeared represents a new stage in Cuoco’s career. If the actress has always excelled in comic roles, Disappeared offers much less humor and more fast-paced dark drama, as his character takes charge of a terribly dangerous situation.
The first opinions on Disappeared were released in the early hours of Friday, January 30, and the first results are now available on Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of writing, Disappeared boasts an 83% review score based on six reviews.
Five reviews were deemed “fresh,” while one review was deemed “rotten.” The first Tomatometer score for Disappeared is less than The flight attendant total score (91%) and slightly higher than Based on a true story total review score (78%). However, more incoming criticism could still affect the final outcome of the MGM+ limited series. The first episode of the series will air later this weekend.
Most critics agree that Cuoco shines in the lead role and the film’s fast pace Disappeared works in favor of the story. Critical Brittany Frédéric wrote that “Cuoco isn’t far removed from the Emmy-nominated performance she gave in HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant, similarly pushing Vanished forward with her stubbornness and naturally sarcastic attitude. “
RogertEbert.com’Richard Roeper wrote that Vanished “feels a bit like a thriller from the late 1960s and early 1970s,” and that it was a “A tightly spun, never-endingly guessing mystery that unfolds in just four densely plotted episodes.”
Other critics, however, noted several problems with the plot. THE Los Angeles Times wrote this Vanished “lacks spark and suspense”, while CBR said the premise was “paper thin”. ScreenRantit’s his Disappeared review noted that the show is also missing a “compelling villain, or at the very least terrifying.”
Alongside Cuoco and Sam Claflin in Disappeared are Karin Viard (The Aries family) as investigative journalist Hélène, who helps Alice unravel the mystery of Tom’s disappearance – and who may or may not have her own motivations for doing so – Matthias Schweighöfer (Oppenheimer) as Tom’s fellow philanthropist Alex, Simon Abkarian (Casino Royale) in the role of the gruff Inspector Drax, and Dar Zuzovsky (The saints) as another of Tom’s most secretive colleagues.
What the general public will think Disappeared remains to be seen. However, given the four-part limited series’ first Rotten Tomatoes score, there’s every chance that Kaley Cuoco and Sam Claflin have yet another trending hit to add to their impressive resume.
Disappeared will premiere on MGM+ on February 1 in the United States, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Latin America, with new episodes airing weekly on Sundays until February 22. The entire season will premiere on Prime Video on February 27 in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
