I used to use Google Maps quite thoughtlessly: point out my destination, change my starting location if necessary, then look up the directions. Job done – or so I thought.
But then I learned that there’s a much more efficient way to use the popular mapping app, and it’s helped me avoid traffic jams, explore my hometown in ways I hadn’t thought of before, and generally have a better, less stressful time navigating any given location. Best of all, it only takes a click or two to install and use it.
Improve your experience
Let’s start with a simple question: what does the map details option actually do? Well, a lot actually. It includes several layers and overlays that convey additional information beyond the usual map view. These overlays work with the default satellite and terrain map types, so you should be able to feel their benefits regardless of which view you use.
My favorite map detail overlay displays live traffic information on your screen. Enable it and Google Maps will highlight major roads in one of several colors, each indicating a traffic level – green is light and dark red is heavily congested, for example. This is extremely useful when you are planning a route and want to see which option will best help you avoid traffic setbacks. After all, no one likes traffic jams.
There are other handy map detail views that come with Google Maps. If you prefer public transportation, for example, an overlay highlights train stations and bike rental locations. In cities where underground services operate, subway lines are also clearly marked, each color-coded to make them easier to follow.
If you’re looking for cycling routes, Google Maps also has an overlay. Activate it and you will quickly see the best places to take your bike for a spin.
Not all map detail views are designed for routing. Some, like Street View or 3D Filters, show you where you can get an enhanced visual experience when using the app, whether by viewing street-level details or 3D renderings of buildings and landmarks.
And then there are the filters adapted to your health and well-being. Google Maps includes overlays for air quality and wildfires, both of which can help you stay safe and avoid potentially dangerous areas.
Overall, there are a wide range of views that allow Google Maps to go beyond standard route options. Whether you walk, drive, bike, or hitchhike on public transportation, you should find helpful options that will enhance your experience.
How to use map details in Google Maps
Getting started with map details in Google Maps is simple. First, open the app and then tap the Layers button in the upper right corner. Under the Card details section, tap one of the options. This should enable the overlay on your map.
You can do this whether or not a route is currently active in the app. Detailed map views also work with all three map types, including default, satellite, and terrain, as mentioned earlier. Note, however, that you can only enable one card details filter at a time.
Given that it’s hidden behind the layers button – which itself is small and can easily be missed – it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that many Google Maps users aren’t even aware of the map details feature. It’s not exactly something the app makes a big deal about, and Google Maps is a competent enough app that you can live without it.
But once you TO DO know it’s there, it’s probably a feature you’ll come back to again and again. I got so much out of it, and it definitely had an outsized impact on me given its simplicity.
Whether you want to check traffic ahead of time, know the best cycling routes in your area, or are concerned about wildfires and air pollution, Google Maps’ map details feature is a great way to stay informed. Get to know it and it might improve the way you travel.
