Today I was using the ChatGPT app on my iPhone when I accidentally held my finger down on the send button (the blue up arrow) a little too long, and was suddenly taken to a new options screen that I hadn’t realized existed before, and which I use all the time now.
The options screen gives you three different intelligence settings for the response you will receive from ChatGPT: High, Medium or Instant.
What’s happening here is that ChatGPT asks you to choose between three different versions of ChatGPT-5.5 that change how long the chatbot thinks before responding. These options are easily visible in the web interface version of ChatGPT, but the reason I’ve never seen them before in the iOS app is because there’s no indication that they exist, and I bet many of you haven’t found them either.
So, launch ChatGPT and try it now – you will be surprised. The workflow goes like this:
- Type your prompt
- Long press the blue send arrow
- Choose a template – for example, Think
- Send
For paid users only
The nice thing is that having the freedom to choose ChatGPT’s intelligence level like this means you can choose differently for each prompt you type.
So if you just need a quick answer to a simple question, choose Instant. If you asked for something more difficult and want to make sure you get the full benefit of AI by thinking about it properly, choose High. THE AVERAGE The setting gives you a balance between the two approaches.
Unfortunately, this feature only works for users with paid ChatGPT plans. If you are using a free ChatGPT account, you will not have these options.
Android Alternatives
Since this feature is not well documented, many people are unaware of its existence. And if you’re using an Android phone, well, it doesn’t actually exist, because this hidden feature is unique to iOS, but there is an Android equivalent.
On Android, when you long press on a reply text (not the send button), a new menu will be available for you. At the end of the menu you can see a Change model option – you can use it to select a thoughtful or instant variation of your current model.
I love discovering hidden features in the technology I own, and it’s often like this: the hidden setting turns out to be something I’ll use all the time, once I discover it. Hopefully you will too.
