The Glenageary skier was the last athlete to start the descent. Starting last brought added pressure, with the track heavily worn by the time Comerford came through the gate, but he managed to negotiate the course to carry his Olympic debut safely to the finish.
Olympic debut
Commenting on his Winter Olympics debut, the 29-year-old said:
“It’s an incredible feeling to make my Olympic debut today in this weather, on this track. Coming down the Stelvio is a huge achievement, coming from the artificial track at home. There’s a huge sense of pride. I made a few mistakes in the race, it was smoother in training, but it’s the race and I’m really proud to have done it.”
Really stimulating course
Thomas Maloney Westg, Norwegian-born Olympic veteranård finished his first race of three with a 35th place finish in the men’s 10km + 10km skiathlon in 49.24.6.
The competition took place in relatively mild conditions, creating a challenging course for athletes in the event which involves skiers competing over 10km on classic skis before progressing to a 10km free skate finish. Wearing bib 36 from the start, in what is his least favorite discipline, Maloney Westgård maintained the frenetic pace from the start.
Speaking afterwards, the thirty-year-old three-time Olympian said:
“It was a difficult question. Soft conditions and quite icy and tricky on the descents and crunchy turns. So it was a very difficult journey, for sure. Just like it should be at the Olympics. I was a little anxious on some descents. So yes, I’m happy to have started the Olympics.
Back in action on February 11
Team Ireland’s next competition is the men’s Alpine Skiing Super-G, with Cormac Comerford competing in his second event on February 11 in Bormio. Following this action, attention returned to Predazzo, when Thomas Maloney Westgård is focusing on the 10 km freestyle.
