I’ve never seen patch notes posted for a press release before, but Discord did exactly that. The company has updated the language around its new age restriction rules to make clear that the “vast majority” of users have nothing to worry about as the company’s AI will be able to accurately estimate their age and bypass controversial new verification procedures rolling out over the coming months.
It’s been a rough 24 hours for Discord, the modern hub for online gaming conversations. The company revealed new age verification requirements on February 9 that would prevent users from accessing certain features, such as “age-restricted experiences,” unless they upload a facial scan or photo of their ID. The blowback was fast and loud, with calls to boycott Discord’s paid Nitro subscriptions and return to old-fashioned website forums.
Maybe that’s why Discord came back a day later to post a “novel” which goes into more detail about its new age insurance rules. “Discord does not require everyone to complete a facial scan or upload an ID to use Discord,” the company promised in a new addendum on February 10. “The vast majority of people can continue to use Discord exactly as they do today, without ever being asked to confirm their age. ”

It’s because Discord AI inference model will be used to guess the age of most users. If he guesses a number equal to or greater than 18, you are out of danger. If not, you will need to provide your sensitive data to the company in order to bypass new teen safety protocols. But Discord is quick to point out that this doesn’t apply to most people, because most people never access adult content on Discord.

In the minority of cases where we cannot confirm you as an adult and you need to access age-restricted areas and settings, then you will be asked to take additional steps.”

The company says it doesn’t keep this information associated with your user data, but if you think there’s a secure way to digitally transmit your face and/or government-issued ID to a company over the internet in 2026, then I’ve got a few. These are absolutely not killer AI robot assistants selling you.
While the reaction has been loud, it’s unclear how many people will actually move away from Discord due to the new rules, although some diehard users of the Discord subreddit are already claiming they’re leaving it. Meanwhile, some social media users have public postings of the cancellation of their paid subscriptionsDiscord’s main source of income.
So far, no one appears to oppose the company’s latest attempt to allay people’s fears. “If this is not reversed, I will cancel my Nitro and all Boosts,” one user wrote on X. “I recommend everyone to do the same.” Discord’s modified announcement, like the original, is already well on its way to being streamlined.
