When I was 25, single and with no Valentine’s Day plans, I went on a whim to see a 1996 movie I’d never heard of. It followed con artist Corky (Gina Gershon) as she moved into a new apartment, immediately seduced by the charms of neighbor Violet (Jennifer Tilly).
The couple become embroiled in Violet’s boyfriend Caesar’s (Joe Pantoliano) money laundering scheme and hatch a plan to steal some of the money for themselves. Effortlessly sexy and thrilling with an uplifting conclusion, Related changed my life for good from that day on.
Stream Bound on Kanopy in the US for free this Valentine’s Day weekend

Look on it
Tell me you don’t see Tilly and Gershon’s lips almost touching in the trailer above and instantly swoon. Fortunately for American viewers, Related is currently available to stream for free on Kanopy… and I can’t stress how much you should take advantage of the deal.
British and Australian fans need not despair, however. Related is currently on Stan, while Brits can find it on BFI Player (although Prime Video regularly downloads it for free with adverts, so keep an eye out for that).
The connection between Violet and Corky is something incredibly special but rarely seen, with an LGBT-positive film ending even more unusual today than it was back then. Bound set a cultural precedent in many ways, and the fact that you know it ends with a happy ending means you can enjoy the exceptionally steamy scenes that build the couple’s budding romance.
Netflix could learn a thing or two from the gorgeous, dark lighting, and a thrifty soundtrack is used to perfection. Even surprisingly crude violence becomes a thing of beauty. No matter what cinematic element you delve into, you’ll find magic.
I can’t remember how many times I’ve watched Bound now, but you can be sure that streaming is exactly how I’m going to spend my Valentine’s Day. If you think The Matrix is a masterpiece of cinema, wait until you see the film that made it possible.
