Konami finally offers a 2008 PlayStation 3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Weapons of the Patriots to modern platforms. Unfortunately, this does not bring its Metal equipment online modes for the journey. These will remain an artifact of the past.
Although it is not mentioned during the reveal during the State of play PlayStation last yearKonami confirmed on the official webpage of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2. “METAL GEAR SOLID 4: The weapons of the Patriots – The Master Collection version of the Patriots does not include METAL GEAR ONLINE”, the warning reads. I guess the war has really changed.
Metal Gear Solid online offered everything from stealth deathmatches and capture missions to bombings and stealths. While Call of Duty popularized quick respawns as players fought through meat grinder choke points, Metal Gear’s riff on online multiplayer provided options for much slower, more deliberate tactical gameplay.
Trying to sneak around opposing players and steal their dog tags in the kind of experience that’s still rare, even in the saturated live service market of 2026. It would have been cool to see some form of MGSO return with the latest remastered collection, but it’s not a complete shock that Konami is giving it up given all the work its resurrection likely would have required.
And luckily, there are other options. Unlike MSG4, the remaster of Peace marcher will feature online cooperative operations and versus operations. The first is intended for two to four players while the second can accommodate up to six players. Wireless local multiplayer will be available, but only on Switch. There’s also Konami’s Fox Hunt mode released last year for Metal Gear Solid Delta.
And modders haven’t given up trying to unofficially bring back Metal Gear Solid online for PC gamers. A modern version of MSG4 will give modders even more options than trying to navigate the infamously tedious technology of the original PS3.
