It is impossible to talk about the best detective films, especially the best heist moviesnot to mention Michael Mann Heat. As one of the most influential films of all time, its impact on pop culture can hardly be overstated. It would be almost impossible to account for every film and series that has paid homage to the film’s iconic scenes.
The modern-day detective film was shaped by HeatThe heist type approach. From its deliberate pacing and jaded characters to its brooding cinematography and intoxicating soundtrack, the film essentially updated the noir genre for modern Hollywood. Its impact has even been felt outside the world of cinema, since US Marines still use HeatShootout scene for weapons training.
That of Michael Mann Heat therefore has a legacy of redefining crime cinema, which has led to the creation of many similar films in the 30 years since its release. However, few films have managed to capture the essence of Heat and his perspectives on Los Angeles. A 2026 film starring MCU alums Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth in major roles is getting closer.
2 years after Al Pacino broke through with The godfather and a year after Robert De Niro broke through with Mean streetsthey both starred in the same film, that of Francis Ford Coppola The Godfather Part 2. The public, who loved both actors, would have to wait more than two decades to see them appear in the same scene.
THE dinner scene in Heat is that of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino first scene together, in which they play a criminal mastermind and the obsessed cop who pursues him throughout the film. De Niro and Pacino elevate the already impactful storyline with their calculated escalation of atmosphere, resulting in a satisfying conclusion to the film’s central conflict.
Both De Niro and Pacino had become icons by the time they starred in Heatbut this was only the second time they starred in a film together. It is even more surprising that De Niro and Pacino only starred in four films totalall crime films, although they are popular contemporaries who regularly work in the genre.
Crime 101 is a sprawling heist film set in Los Angeles
Bart Layton’s first fully fictional narrative feature film, 2026 Crime 101stars Chris Hemsworth as Mike, a mail thief who managed to evade detection despite months of activity planning and executing perfect heists. Opposite him are insurance broker Sharon (Halle Berry) and LAPD detective Lou (Mark Ruffalo). The latter has become obsessed with tracking down the elusive Mike.
THE reviews of Crime 101 praise the scope and pacing of the film, as it develops all the subplots, even those that have no relation to the main storyline. Located in Los Angeles, the film treats the city as a character in its own rightallowing its instantly recognizable architecture to create a sense of familiarity that contributes to the film’s nostalgic treatment of the detective genre.
Throughout the film, Lou is the only man who believes Mike exists, and despite the misgivings of his partner and his LAPD superiors, he never stops his pursuit of the elusive man. So when Mike and Lou meet in the final scene of Crime 101with the former driving the latter to a hotel, it’s the perfect setup for the climax.
While Lou and Mike’s confrontation ranges from a casual conversation during a car ride to a heated exchange in a high-pressure situation in a hotel room, the ambiance is reminiscent of Al Pacino and De Niro’s dinner scene in Heat. The characters may differ in temperament, but narratively, the two climactic confrontation scenes play the same role in their corresponding film.
Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth have a rich history of collaboration
There was many great acting duos in cinema historybut the crucial nature of Heat‘s final confrontation is unprecedented because of its cultural imprint as the first time two of the best actors of all time share the screen. Crime 101The confrontation between Mike and Lou doesn’t have the same impact, but it has major pop-cultural significance.
Having played Hulk and Thor in the MCU, Ruffalo and Hemsworth have worked together on several occasions. Now while Chris Hemsworth’s MCU Future Confirmed With Thor 5Hulk is unlikely to return in a Thor film as he did in Thor: Ragnarok. SO, Crime 101 might be the only time the actors share the screen outside of a Avengers movie.
Crime 101’s Similarities to Heat Don’t Make It Unoriginal
Crime 101 received positive reviews despite constant observations from the public and critics about its similarity to Heat. The philosophical conflict between the two main characters, the setting, pacing and characterization – Crime 101 is considered one of the best copies of Heat at its best. This idea neglects much of what the film has to offer.
A bit like Heat, Crime 101 may have updated the crime thriller genre for modern audiences. It is long and slow, challenging the gradually decreasing attention span of modern viewersbut its characters all use modern jargon. The cinematography and editing of the chase scenes are resolutely modern and Crime 101 adds its own touch to the best story of the genre.
