While Lou and Mike’s confrontation ranges from a casual conversation during a car ride to a heated exchange in a high-pressure situation in a hotel room, the ambiance is reminiscent of Al Pacino and De Niro’s dinner scene in Heat. The characters may differ in temperament, but narratively, the two climactic confrontation scenes play the same role in their corresponding film.

Crime 101 received positive reviews despite constant observations from the public and critics about its similarity to Heat. The philosophical conflict between the two main characters, the setting, pacing and characterization – Crime 101 is considered one of the best copies of Heat at its best. This idea neglects much of what the film has to offer.

A bit like Heat, Crime 101 may have updated the crime thriller genre for modern audiences. It is long and slow, challenging the gradually decreasing attention span of modern viewersbut its characters all use modern jargon.
