Toy Story 5 and its dystopian vision of childhood and technology were inevitable

Toy Story 5 will be the first Woody-Buzz CGI fable in the film series, which I’ll move on to. I don’t need to see comedy ensue as iconic characters launch headfirst into the harsh realities of technology and childhood.

Pixar and Disney released the first feature film Toy Story 5 trailer Thursday, February 19, offering the clearest picture yet of what to expect from this once-groundbreaking but now aging franchise. The film hits theaters on June 19.

Where it all started

For those who live under a rock and are completely unfamiliar with the Toy story movies, Toy story depicts the hidden life of a child’s toys. They talk, laugh, play, plot, complete missions and more, all out of sight of the adults and children who own them. In the original, Woody meets the spaceman’s toy, Buzz Lightyear, who believes he is real. You can kind of guess the rest, but their bond is what drives much of the next three films. But at the end of Toy Story 4Buzz and Woody broke up.

Toy Story 5 brings the couple together in a struggle for attention. Really, that’s it Toy Story 5 that’s about it. Bonnie, who inherited Andy’s toy collection as an adult, gets a “Lillypad” tablet and falls into screen addiction. Toys are quickly realizing that this is a widespread problem: analog toys are being abandoned in favor of digital toys.

“Toys are for play, but technology is for everything,” Woody explains, stating the problem succinctly.

The trailer shows Bonnie being consumed by her screen and the toys fighting to save, well, not her, but themselves.

The Lillipad, which comes in a frog-shaped case with eyes, also speaks when out of sight of Bonnie and the adults. When the toys confront him, he doesn’t seem to pay attention (understandably), but he actually records everything they say and then translates it into several languages.

While it’s not entirely clear that Lillypad is the villain here, I think the point on technology is obvious: it’s bad and it ruins childhoods.

There is no history without technology

Yes, that’s a fallacious argument coming from a company that uses computers to design and animate Buzz, Woody and the gang, then banks of servers to generate each image of Toy story in existence.

I’m sure Pixar and Disney will find a clever way to solve the conundrum without negating the toys or technology, but I don’t know if I’ll buy it.

The truth is that technology has changed society and gaming. Adults are handing phones and tablets to children and even toddlers to silence them. When I see a child in a stroller, I no longer look to see if their preference is Bert, Ernie, Big Bird or Velveteen Rabbit. They don’t tighten a security blanket. Instead, I look to see if they’re carrying an Amazon Fire tablet, an iPad, the latest Android flagship, or an iPhone.

The frozen look that Pixar recreates on Bonnie’s face is all too real, and no matter what these toys do, Bonnie probably isn’t giving up on technology. As Lillipad says to Woody in her slightly robotic voice, “Bonnie needs someone’s help at least for the same century.”

When Bonnie turns on Lillipad, one of the first things he says to her is “Let’s play,” but he only offers the kind that engages the eyes, ears, and fingers, leaving little room for Bonnie to explore with a toy dinosaur, fly with Buzz, or ride off into the sunset with Woody and Bullseye.

It’s not just technology that’s the villain here. The issues in the original Toy story the films were so much more elevated: they dealt with love, rejection, anger, jealousy, loss and hard truths. I know, everything was done with a light and skillful touch mixing comedy, visual gags and pathos. Is it possible for Toy Story 5 and its digital villain to carry the same emotional weight? I doubt it.

Maybe I’ll just rewatch the original Toy storyreleased over 30 years ago, when the internet was young, cell phones were stupid, and the only screen that really got attention was the television.
