As A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms“Season 1 finale releases on HBO, ScreenRant follows with live reactions, analysis and terrible jokes about the new episode.
THE A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 6 live blog is led by ScreenRantsenior TV editor Kara Headash, ScreenRant News Editor Jordan Williamsand old ScreenRant Film and television series editor James Huntwho is now a content strategist at ComicBook.com. While at ScreenRantJames was a certified Game of Thrones expert who led coverage of the first two seasons of Dragon Houseso it’s an honor to have him make an appearance and help us with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms!
While Jordan and James have read the books, Kara provides insight as someone who hasn’t read the books (yet!) while serving as moderator of the live blog. Now let’s move on to the recap and reactions for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ season 1 finale!
00:34, James – Man, it’s really amazing that Dunk didn’t die during the trial of the seven.
00:57, Jordan – The irony of Storm’s End being brutally boring, but also the site of two of the most horrific child deaths in history. Game of Thrones And Dragon House.
1:18, James – Me when Lyonel Baratheon asks, “Have you ever been to Tarth?”
For those unfamiliar, Brienne of Tarth is a descendant of Ser Duncan the Great (we just don’t know the details of how yet, but it’s definitely teasing him).
1:24, Jordan – “The others are screwing me over” – are we closest to a reference to the White Walkers in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? In the A Song of Ice and Fire books, the White Walkers are only referred to as the “Others” (until now!). However, Dunk and Lyonel will be long gone before they officially return.
1:29, Kara – “Leave, witch.” is a phrase I will definitely use from now on.
02:01, James – “Fuck you, I will hate you like a brother.” – Baratheon sibling rivalries continue!
I definitely wouldn’t go to Storm’s End with Lyonel. This sounds like great fun for an evening, maybe a weekend, but beyond that it would be exhausting.
Also, a nice little setup for Dunk and Lyonel’s future conflict, if the series ever gets there (that’s in almost 30 years!)2:02, Jordan – A little too soon for Lyonel to be relieved about Baelor’s death, especially since he was brave enough to defy his own family and fight alongside Dunk, but there is some truth to what he says about the focus being on him rather than the others who died. Beesbury and Hardyng joined Dunk at great risk to their lives and the wrath of the Knight of the Seven Kingdoms members of House Targaryen, but Baelor entered the Trial of the Seven believing he would survive because the knights of the Kingsguard could not touch them. However, Lyonel also doesn’t know the true cost and scale of the tragedy surrounding Baelor’s death, with those consequences rippling across the Game of Thrones timeline.
3:20 p.m., Kara- So, does this mean there will be no more Lyonel in future seasons…?
3:38 p.m., Jacques – After that, they banned hats in Westeros because Egg’s drip was too strong. The most heated thing about House Targaryen since the death of the last dragons.
3:40 p.m., Jordan – Disappointed we didn’t get a good introduction to the rest of the Targaryens at the funeral. It’s most likely that the girl next to Valarr is his wife, Kiera of Tyrosh, while the other two silver-haired figures on the other side of him are likely Egg’s sisters, Daella and Rhae, or Rhaegel Targaryen’s daughters, Aelora and Daenora.
3:45 p.m., Kara- I guess we have to assume that Maekar made Egg wear the hat to hide his bald head, but that just made the kid even cooler.
Did Maekar feel guilty for killing Baelor, or did he want his brother out?
4:18 p.m., Jacques – Valarr basically didn’t exist until now, but this is a really strong scene with him, which captures the same moment from the book well. And we will never see him again!
4:21 p.m., Kara- “He died in my armor. » – a brutal takeaway truth for Valarr. But imagine how different everything would have been in Westeros if Baelor had finally become king…
5:00 p.m., Jordan – “The greatest since Aegon the Dragon” – based on George RR Martin’s comments about how different Westeros would have been if Baelor had lived and become king, Valarr’s prediction is probably accurate. It’s also a good way to set up HBO’s Aegon’s Conquest spinoff, which will show how Aegon really was a ruler after simply hearing so many stories and legends about him.
06:17, Jacques – I think sometimes we all need a hug like that.
7:13 a.m., Kara- Oh, looks like Raymun was the real winner after the trial of seven!
7:30 a.m., Jacques – Fossoways from New Barrel!
LOL as if Raymun wasn’t already so clearly coded by Podrick Payne, the Rowan scene confirms it! I’m here for it, very happy for these two. The discreet Rowan, one of the best secondary characters of the season, could even be part of the ballot for my first all-AKOTSK team (with Dunk, Egg, Baelor and Lyonel, then her or Raymun)
7:35 a.m., Jordan – Raymun actually became a knight, created a new branch of the Fossoways, and got married all in one weekend. What a tournament!
8:20 a.m., Kara- Add Raymun and Rowan to the list of characters I hope to return in future seasons (even if it means massive changes to the book)
9:22 a.m., Jacques – I can’t blame Maekar for just wanting to get rid of Aerion, but I don’t think a few years in the Free Cities will get him through…
9:25 a.m., Jordan – Although he is also not present in the second book, this seems to confirm that we will not see Aerion in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2.
9:55 a.m., Kara- “You will also hear them whispering” – Baelor’s death cannot be blamed on a single person, but whatever the truth, it will surely haunt Dunk forever.
10:03 a.m., Jordan – Maekar is right that King Daeron will die soon, but he won’t be the only Targaryen competing shortly after the Ashford tournament…
11:15 a.m., Jordan – Joffrey notes in Game of Thrones that four pages of the White Paper are reserved for Ser Duncan the Great… the kingdom will certainly need this foot.
11:25 a.m., Jacques – This scene is so perfectly played. Dunk’s “morning after” moment is simply wonderful, and Sam Spruell is brilliant as Maekar here.
12:00, James – A place at Summerhall, eh?
12:30 p.m., Kara – Thanks to Baelor and Maekar for being the only ones to seemingly show respect for Arlan throughout the season.
12:37 p.m., Jacques – “I think I’m done with princes” is the smartest thing Dunk has said all season.
12:55 p.m., Kara – How was Dunk able to climb that mountain to Baelor’s funeral if he can’t even walk down the stairs?
1:45 p.m., Kara- I don’t know if the world can handle Egg being so visibly upset. And Dunk, for that matter.
1:49 p.m., Jacques – “Maybe you’re not the knight I thought you were” – a phrase that I’m sure will no longer make sense very soon…
2:45 p.m., Kara- Arlan of Pennytree, origins of the name!
3:00 p.m., James – DUNK HAS NEVER BEEN CONFIRMED!
The book alludes to it heavily, and the show did it even more, I think (the opening episodes where Dunk remembered what Ser Arlan did and it always came back to him, except for any mention of him being a knight; the “it’s mine by right” line about the sword; it’s discomfort at the idea of knighting Raymun, etc.). But still, it’s a completely different matter to make it official and remove any ambiguity.
And of course, the fact is that he is as true a knight as anyone. I wonder if he’ll eventually be officially knighted, perhaps confessing it to Egg at some point, and if he’ll do it quietly when he’s king?
3:40 p.m., Jordan – Dunk didn’t ask much of him and would continue to defend Arlan’s name after his death, but now he will spend the rest of his life not knowing why Arlan wouldn’t give him what he wanted most – and may still doubt himself because of it.
4:20 p.m., Kara- Leave it to AKOTSK to inject a small amount of humor into an otherwise moving scene with a fake death of Arlan.
4:23 p.m., Jacques – OH MY GOD the bees on Humfry Beesbury’s coffin. Beesbury. The bees… bury them! HBO, please give Ira Parker 15 more seasons of this series immediately.
4:45 p.m., Jacques – Yeah, Rowan played a blinder* here with Raymun (*admittedly not sure if that phrase translates across the pond but basically, she picked it perfectly)
(In case you didn’t know, James is very British!)
5:18 p.m., Kara – “Have you no shame in coming here? -Dunk can barely stand, but I don’t think he’d hesitate to beat up another Targaryen after everything he’s just been through.
5:59 p.m., Kara – You can instantly see Dunk reconsidering his decision with Egg as his squire the moment Daeron says, “we will make him a man too.»
6:15 p.m., Jacques – I would have liked to see a little more of Daeron before/during this trial, but it’s a good part, even if I can’t imagine Aerion being a “happy child.»
