For manga readers, however, it’s an important niche in several demographics, with seinen hits like Monster, Pluto, Or Boys of the 20th century by Naoki Urasawa being easy recommendations. While Kodansha Magazine pocket always regularly publishes new chapters for The lonely dead are thick as snow, its North American print release won’t arrive until March 3, 2026. Written by Hajime Inoryū and illustrated by Shota Itō, it tells the dark story of a gruesome crime scene, its multitude of victims, how its protagonist, Jin Saeki, is connected.

The manga may disarm readers at first with Jin’s initial stupidity, as he is completely unprepared for the horrors he discovers. The lonely dead are as thick as snow volume #1. Fully expecting to find porn on unmarked videos found at the scene of a burglary, Jin soon watches as he uncovers a mortifying secret involving imprisoned, starving children and their possible survivors.
The character design is sharp, its faces expressive and its shadows eerily precise to depict depth and even villainy as characters like central suspect Juzo Haizawa chew the scenery in every panel he appears. But while everyone maintains their innocence, despite wearing their red flags like a cape, there is something extremely bizarre about the other victims.

By waxing a little philosophical as True DetectiveThe lonely dead are as thick as snow always manages to stand out with its themes at stake. Instead of pessimism, nihilism and other nuances of existential reflections which True Detective iconic season 1, The lonely dead are as thick as snow paints a grim picture of the neglected vulnerabilities of Japanese society.
Haizawa himself is said to have thought about this as he trained the children he took in to steal the food they wanted, reminding them that the laws in place to protect them have failed to protect them thus far. The 13 victims revealed at the beginning of the story refer to kodokushi (lonely deaths), where urbanization causes some to die neglected, forgotten or deliberately hidden.
All this is revealed in volume 1 of The lonely dead are thick as snow, as survivor, Kanon, recounts her experiences, casting doubt on Haizawa’s role in the murders and hinting at the sinister and broken people with whom she was taken in. It’s a truly fascinating series, and English-speaking readers can check it out, as well as the 2024 live-action drama at I’m eating.
