Improve your sleeping experience

I just returned from a three day trip using this pad for the first time in a few months. What a revelation it is, every time I sleep on this thing. I had been testing other pads for most of the winter. Although some are very good, nothing compares to Therm-a-Rest NeoLoft for comfort. This pad has reinvigorated my love of hiking ensuring I get a good night’s sleep in the backcountry. It’s plush and comfortable, like a soft campervan cushion, with excellent pressure relief (pro tip: for maximum comfort, don’t stuff it too much). The R-4.8 insulation keeps you warm down to around zero freezing, although I used it in colder conditions by pairing it with a closed-cell foam pad. I also like that it is quite small considering its size when inflated.

Lighten your load with an ultralight tent

The Big Agnes Copper Spur tents are high quality, lightweight and well designed. Weighing in at 2 pounds 10 ounces for the two-person model, this is one of the lightest freestanding tents on the market. It is easy to install and stable even in strong winds. The Copper Spur is also very livable, with steep side walls to maximize interior space. Mesh pockets make it easy to store gear and give you a place to stick your headlamp for dispersed light. The ingenious “canopy” design makes getting in and out a snap (provided you have hiking poles to set it up). All seams are sealed with waterproof, solvent-free polyurethane tape. They’re also durable despite their lightweight fabrics, holding up to years of abuse on the trails. I recommend grabbing the imprint ($80)however, to help protect the floor. It also allows for fly planting only, which provides a nice shelter on sunny days at the beach.

Get the best lightweight backpack from REI

I tested this pack quite a bit last summer as part of an upcoming guide on ultralight backpacks. It is very comfortable and can carry a load of 25 pounds without problem. It’s not the lightest pack I’ve tried (it weighs 1 pound, 14 ounces for a stand), but like most REI brand gear, it strikes a good balance of features and price. It is made of UHMWPE ripstop nylonwith profiled steel piping for the frame, making it more studied than a frameless pack. I love the pre-curved back panel and hip belt, which were much more comfortable than most ultralight backpacks in this category. It also has nice cargo lifts and its minimalist design helps keep the weight down. My only real complaint is that the exterior pocket isn’t very big.

Get the best camping stove

Any flame will work, but the Coleman Cascade 3-in-1 Stove truly elevates your outdoor cooking experience. I lived full time in a campervan for over seven years and cooked on this stove almost every day. It’s all about the cast iron grills. They are more robust than usual metal and do not warp over time. Give them a light coating of oil periodically and they will develop a protective seasoning, just like a cast iron skillet. The flat top also comes in handy for making camp pancakes for a hungry family. The coupon brings the price down here to $200.

Offers on camping and hiking equipment

The Mayfly Osmo tent from Nemo Equipment is my most used two-person tent. It’s solidly built, smartly designed, and has proven itself to be durable and, most importantly, dry during my years of testing. I tested the Mayfly model for two peoplewhich has a weight of 3 pounds 8 ounces. A bit heavier than our top pick for ultralight backpacking (the Copper Spur suggested above) but still quite light when shared between two people. It’s a semi-freestanding design, which means there are fewer poles, but you do have to stake out the foot of the tent. Two sewn-in ridged supports ensure there’s plenty of space under your feet, but the Mayfly is on the tight side. Two sleeping pads are suitable and hikers under 6′ 4″ will be fine, but if you are not close to your hiking partner, the three-person model for $375 ($125 off) will be a better option.

The Dragonfly Osmo is a slightly lighter tent than the Mayfly above, aimed at ultralight backpackers who want a freestanding tent. I tested and appreciated the version for one person, spacious, light and robust. Osmo fabric is Nemo’s proprietary blend of nylon and polyester, which in my experience sheds rain better than most nylon rain flies. THE The Dragonfly Osmo 3-person version is also on sale for $435 ($145 off)and the two-person, bikepacking-friendly version, with poles that fit between your handlebars, is on sale for $376 ($204 off)

This is the best value in the REI Members Day Sale. The Wonderland 6 replaces my beloved Kingdom 6 as a spacious, REI hoop-designed family car camping tent. While I prefer the square design of Base Camp 6the Wonderland 6 is undeniably more spacious, better ventilated and overall a better choice for most families. The biggest thing I miss about Wonderland is the interior dividing wall, which makes it easy to have a sleeping area and a separate area for relaxing. Wonderland 4 is also on sale for $257 ($172 off)but I highly recommend the two-person version because it costs almost the same and gives you considerably more living space.

The Z-Lite Sol weighs next to nothing (10 ounces for the small one), folds up small enough to clip to the outside of any bag, and can serve as a chair, extra padding on cold nights, a table, and more. I’m too old and too soft to be the kind of ultra-minimalist who gets by with just a Z-Lite for sleeping, but I still have one on almost all of my backpacking trips.

The self-inflating Comfort Plus occupies an interesting boundary between car camping mat And sleeping mat for hiking. At 3 pounds, it’s definitely not lightweight, but if you don’t mind the weight, it’s a comfortable option. The open-cell interior provides a pleasantly plush sleeping experience with enough padding to help even side sleepers avoid falling over.

Formerly our best choice for hiking mattressesthe Exped Ultra 7R remains an excellent winter sleeping pad, especially at this price. The Ultra has down insulation inside to achieve the high R rating. At less than 2 pounds for the large version, it’s not that heavy for a four-season mattress, but it is quite bulky, taking up considerable space due to the down. I used this pad up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit and was very comfortable (in a 10 degree bag). Exped rates it at -20 degrees F.

The Sea to Summit Ether Light I also like the baffle design better than the Therm-a-Rest, and it seems to be a bit more durable in my testing. Note that the XT has been replaced by a newer model, but this one is still great.

Nemo’s Forte 35 is our favorite synthetic sleeping bag. It’s rated at 35 degrees (comfort rated), making it a good choice for summer. What I like most about this bag, and almost all Nemo sleeping bags, is the wider fit from the torso to the knees. This bag is almost a hybrid of a mummy bag and your dad’s good old square sleeping bag from the 1970s. Needless to say, this bag is spacious.

The Arc’teryx Beta SL rain jacket is our favorite rain jacket. It’s Arc’teryx’s lightest rain jacket, but it’s also one of the few jackets that has never failed to keep me dry. It features the latest innovation in Gore-Tex fabric, called ePE (expanded polyethylene): it is a breathable and waterproof membrane laminated to a nylon side (PFC-free). It has a hydrostatic head (HH) of 28,000, which is much better than the usual 10,000 found in most jackets. This deal somewhat alleviates the only thing I don’t like about this jacket: the price.

The classic rain jacket leather from Patagonia, now with a PFC-free DWR finish. I like the looser fit of the Arc’teryx Beta SL above, but this jacket is 95% as good and less than half the price of the Beta. It features a two-way adjustable hood and cuffs with Velcro to provide a nice, rain-proof seal. The only real complaint I have with this jacket is that it’s noisier, but at this price I can handle a little extra wrinkling from the nylon.

There are only a few colors available at this price, but it’s a great deal on one of the most packable synthetic down jackets we’ve tested. If you avoid down, but want a lightweight down jacket for three-season hikes, or simply around town, this is the jacket for you.

Another deal with a limited color selection, but it’s too good a price to pass up. The 650 down jacket is one of the most economical three-season down jackets you can buy, even more so at this price. At 10.9 ounces, it’s reasonably lightweight and has large hand pockets and very nice internal pockets for storing a hat or gloves. The children’s version is also on sale in a pretty yellow color, practical for spotting your child in the snow.

The Patagonia Down Sweater is a much-loved classic down jacket. It uses 800-fill-power down and is almost over-stuffed, making it a beefier coat than many others I’ve tried. It still has plenty of volume, though, and the recycled nylon ripstop fabric still looks like it did the day I brought it home (this fabric is now made from recycled fishing nets).

Nemo’s resolution is excellent packaging that incorporates a low waste footprint into the design. It uses solution-dyed fabrics and avoids straps and buckles in favor of elastics and pullers. This makes adjustment more difficult, but once you get used to it and choose the fit, it’s not a problem. The Resolve is a comfortable pack. Although technically frameless, it appears to have some structure. and it sits high on your back. At 1 pound 15 ounces, it’s also quite light.

The Flash 22 may be the daily pack at the best value for money on the market, particularly for sale. I was surprised by how comfortable this thing was, despite the lightweight straps and minimal padding. It carries loads of up to 15 pounds without straining the shoulders, and the side pockets are fabulously large, big enough for a Nalgene bottle or rain jacket. The Flash 22 is made of 70 denier recycled ripstop nylon, which is lighter, but mine held up well, even on some tough hikes in Utah canyons with no more than mud spots. This is Mystery Ranch’s attempt at creating an ultralight pack. It still weighs 3 pounds, 13 ounces, but the full suspension system can handle loads well beyond what most ultralight bags (even those with frames) can handle. It’s one of the most comfortable packs I’ve tested and my first choice for any load over 25 pounds, but unfortunately Mystery Ranch has discontinued it, so this might be your last chance to buy one.

If you want to bring a hiking chairthis is the one to get. It’s about the lightest on the market at 18 ounces, and it’s nice and small. Nemo also solved the main problem with all pole chairs: the included base cushion prevents it from sinking into soft ground.

As with most Yeti sales, this one only applies to one color, in this case the incredibly bright Firefly Yellow. I can almost guarantee you will never lose it if you get this color. The Yeti Hopper Cooler is my favorite cooler for an afternoon at the beach. It’s just big enough to hold ice, drinks, and snacks for my family of five.
