The mother of four said inmates worked grueling hours in harsh weather and living conditions, earning less than a dollar an hour, which was nothing compared to a disaster of this magnitude.
Nearly 1,000 inmates reportedly helped fight the wildfires, which they said had already burned more than 40,000 acres and killed about 16 people. However, no inmate firefighter lost their life while trying to save those affected.
