Merino wool is a super fiber. The best merino wool clothing somehow manages to be comfortable in 95-degree heat, and merino base layers keep you warm well below freezing. Unlike synthetic fibers derived from petroleum, merino wool is natural and renewable.
The versatility of merino wool means there is a bewildering array of blends and options to choose from. Here are our favorite merino wool products that we’ve tested by wearing and washing them (usually in cold water and hanging to dry, although we tumble dry them just to see what happens) over months, or even years in some cases. Once you’re done here, don’t forget to check out the rest of our clothing guides, like Best Merino Wool T-Shirts, Best Base Layers, Best down jackets, Best HoodiesAnd Best Hiking Boots.
Updated April 2026: We replaced our favorite boxers with Wool & Prince, added more hoodies and the Ibex Goat short sleeves for women. We’ve also updated prices and links throughout.
Why is merino wool so great?
Merino wool is great because you’re stealing a sheep’s ability to stay warm or cool depending on the temperatures they’re in, a process often called thermoregulation. If you’ve only ever worn the kind of itchy wool sweaters your proverbial grandmother was supposed to make, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. The answer is that merino sheep have finer, softer wool, which has evolved to keep them comfortable in a wide range of temperatures and is comfortable to wear close to your skin. Wool is also durable.
One sheep can produce 4 to 5 pounds of wool per year. That’s because the sheep that make merino wool drink only the purest alpine waters and study the art of comfort under the tutelage of those uptight Pashmina goats, who, let’s face it, might know a thing or two about wonderfully plush softness. I’m kidding. Merino sheep, however, have this softer wool, and merino wool is a remarkable fabric that has become a cornerstone of my wardrobe.
Merino wool comes in different weights, which you’ll frequently see listed as “200 gsm” or something similar. (GSM refers to grams per square meter, sometimes expressed as g/m.) What’s important is the scale and where your garment falls on it. At the low end, you have T-shirts and underwear, which typically weigh 150gsm, although we’ve seen some up to 120gsm. As a general rule, anything under 200gsm makes a good base layer or t-shirt. 200 to 300 gsm are your mid layers, and anything over 300 gsm is a heavier garment.
If you are more familiar with synthetic ratings like those often used on fleece, know that in my experience, about 120-160 gsm of wool is about 100 weight fleece, 160-200 gsm of wool is about 200 weight fleece, and 200+ wool is about 300 weight fleece. In any case, wool is warmer because it retains heat better, especially in windy conditions. (That said, sometimes there are reasons to opt for fleece, like its incredible lightness.)
Nuyarn is a merino wool/synthetic hybrid weave, in which merino wool is wrapped around a nylon core for warmth, lightness and durability. The idea is to get the temperature regulating benefits of merino, but add some of the longevity of nylon. In my experience, Nuyarn mostly works. It’s our top choice for base layers, although I find it less necessary in more casual clothing, where I prefer 100% wool.
How to Care for Merino Wool
Most merino products have care instructions. This will most likely be wash cold and dry flat. This last point is important, because hanging the wool to dry will stretch it (because of the weight of the water). While most merino wool labels state that the garment can be machine washed, my experience shows that hand washing merino wool will extend its life. This is especially true for very lightweight (150 g/m²) merino base layers and T-shirts. The exception is Minus33’s Microweight Raglan Short Sleeve T-Shirt, which is machine washable and dryer safe. Having done both on mine for over a year, I can guarantee that it actually holds up.
I’ve never had a problem storing merino in my closet between clothes, but for long-term storage I recommend taking precautions against moths, which are known to eat holes in wool. I’ve lost merino clothing to moths.
If you don’t want to smell like mothballs, there are better solutions. I make sure to wash and dry everything I store thoroughly, then seal it in a compression bag, like this. Another option is to put your merino garment in a cotton bag or alternatively wrap it in cotton and then put it in a plastic bin. It is very important to ensure the garment is completely dry before using any of these storage methods, otherwise your wool will smell musty and mildewed. Other options include storing your garment in a cedar chest, which is a good natural moth deterrent, or using moth traps or lavender sachets, which will repel moths.
100% merino or blends
Should you buy 100% merino or should you go for a blend? The answer is… it depends. On the garment in question, the use case and your preferences. Probably the best way to find out is to try several and see what you like. One of the benefits of blends is that they are stretchy, making them more suitable for active activities like hiking, climbing, etc. I like 100% merino for heavier mid layers like hoodies or jackets, but I prefer blends for lighter layers. In my experience, the closer I get to my skin, the more blending I want, with Nuyarn being my top choice for base layers.
There are also alpaca blends that are also wonderfully soft (I love everything I’ve tried Cat And Weapons of the Andes). If you’re one of the few people who experience merino itch, you might be allergic to lanolin, which is the skin oil produced by sheep. Alpacas do not produce lanolin and their fibers are finer than those of merino. This makes the alpaca warmer and softer, but it’s also more expensive.
Merino vs. synthetic fibers
Which is the best? The answer is again…it depends (sorry). But usually merino. By synthetics, I generally mean polyester, nylon, polypropylene, rayon, or blends of these and other fabrics – anything except cotton, wool, and linen.
Synthetics are generally more effective at wicking away sweat, which means they tend to be drier. They also tend to dry faster, so when it comes to things like socks and underwear, even most “merino” options are often more than 50% synthetic. Synthetics are simply better at handling moisture. How important this is depends on a multitude of personal factors. For example, I feel weird and almost clammy in anything synthetic, so I don’t really care about how much moisture it wicks away.
The downside to this moisture wicking is that synthetics trap odors. Some chemical treatments can help, but I’ve never tried anything synthetic as odor resistant as merino wool.
Another difference is breathability. Synthetics are passable in this area, but this is where merino really excels. If you’re hot and you’re climbing an exposed slope to an open pass, then descending into the cool of a forest, merino is your friend, because its breathability means less sweat to cool you down as you step out of the sun. Again, the importance of this depends on your body.
The final factor to consider is durability. In some cases, synthetic materials will last longer than pure merino wool, especially in cases where abrasion is a major source of wear and tear. In my opinion, this is just another reason to choose a merino blend rather than going all the way to synthetic, but it’s something to think about if you do a lot of off-trail hiking or climbing – any activity where your clothes are going to take a beating.
To really see how remarkable merino wool is, start at the bottom, with the clothing next to your skin. Merino really shines as a base layer. It’s warmer for its weight, wicks moisture well, and unlike synthetic fabrics, merino stays odor-free for several days. Be sure to read our guide to overlays to learn more about how to put it all together and stay comfortable in any weather. We also have a separate guide for the best base layers If you want to know all your options, here are our top merino picks in this guide.
Best lightweight base layer
The Ibex Woolies Pro Tech Base Layer is the best lightweight merino base layer we’ve tested. If you want a durable shirt, this is it. The Woolies are Nuyarn (see above), made from 85% merino wool and 15% nylon. Merino wool is wrapped around a nylon core, which increases warmth while being lighter (5 oz for the big man) and more durable. It’s my first choice for anything technical. It’s what I bring hiking, backpacking, and it’s Reviews Editor Adrienne So’s choice for running, climbing, and other high-aerobic activities when it’s cold. I also like the Woolies Pro Tech Bottoms ($115)this is what I bring in a backpack, except in the hottest weather. There is also a quarter zip version shirt if you prefer.
Besides comfort and warmth, one of the reasons we recommend Woolies is that they last. Ibex is what passes for a heritage company in this space; the company was founded in 1997 and has been making merino clothing for a long time. Adrienne’s parents bought her two sets of Ibex base layers in 2001 which she still wears today, in the year of our Lord 2025. Properly cared for, Woolies will keep you warm for years.
Best Thick Base Coat
When I want something a little warmer than the lightweight Woolies above, I use Sma’s Classic Long Sleeve Base Layer rtwool. These are perhaps the most popular merino shirts, and for good reason: they’re very comfortable, tend to be looser fitting, feature durable seams that won’t chafe, and sit on the shoulder for comfort when carrying a backpack. Made from 87% merino wool (blended with nylon), they are also very durable while remaining lightweight (10.3 oz for a large man). This Smartwool shirt, as well as matching pants ($125)are perfect for cold winter days.
The choices primarily have what my wife calls “that sporty look,” which the industry describes as “technical.” This 100% merino shirt from Unbound is the opposite: it just looks like a long-sleeve shirt. It’s incredibly soft and although it fluffs up a bit if you put it in the dryer (don’t), it has proven to be very durable – I’ve worn it constantly for over a year now and it still looks like it did when I got it. It’s the long-sleeve base layer twin to our favorite tee (see below). It’s on the thin side for a base layer, making it perfect for chilly mornings in the shoulder seasons. It’s also versatile; it can be used as a base layer, but it also doubles as a T-shirt when it’s not too cold. Fit true to size, and if the one you want is sold out, be patient; Unbound updates its inventory frequently.
There are so many! Here are a few more to consider, but really, go read the base layer guide.

Aspect High Waisted Base Layer Bottoms
This is another great option for women looking for something that can be worn both around town and on the trail. My daughter even wore them under shorts for no-gi juijitsu and they held up very well, which is a testament to their durability.

Less33
Yukon Thick Thermal Long Sleeves
If you have to deal with extreme cold, based in New Hampshire Less33 is the company for shopping. Where I live, winter temperatures regularly drop below 0F and the Yukon comes into its own. The 400gsm 100% merino weave feels more like a sweatshirt than a base layer, but if you live in the north you need it.
Don’t forget your neck. I live in this Turtle Fur gaiter during the winter and also use the lighter and ultra-thin version for hiking at altitude in summer to protect myself from the sun without resorting to sunscreen. It’s wonderfully soft, not too tight and never smells.
Merino mid layers
Fleece has its place, but I rarely wear it these days. I prefer merino for my mid layers. This better helps your body regulate its temperature. The only place that fleece always wins for me is hiking. It’s almost always lighter for comparable warmth, at least in mid layers.
Like the Northern Lights or the McRib, the thickest Ibex wool hoodie appears irregularly and with fanfare. The Mammoth Hoodie is indeed a big furry beast: it’s basically the weight of the classic American Giant hoodie, but it’s made of 85% wool and 15% nylon for added warmth and stretch. Ibex says it’s the warmest hoodie they’ve ever made, and during my week of testing, I used it in place of a jacket in temperatures in the mid-30s. It features an athletic fit with zippered pockets and thumbholes. I wear a beanie with it in the cold because the scuba hood is supposed to fit under a helmet, which means it’s too small to provide enough warmth for my large shaved head on its own. —Martin Cizmar
This very warm hoodie (300 g/m²) is made from 85% merino, 12% nylon and 3% elastane. The woven synthetic materials give it good elasticity and contribute to durability. I find this to be the warmest of all the merino hoodies I’ve tested at this weight of fabric, and it’s particularly good at stopping the wind. I also love the simple, clean lines of the cut and design.

Ibex
Indie Hoodie
WIRED’s Chief Commercial Officer Martin Cizmar tested this mid-weight wool hoodie and says it’s now one of his “absolute favorite pieces of clothing.” See what good wool does for you? That makes you a fan. The fit of this one is sporty but not too tight that you can’t layer it underneath. The thumb loops, high zipped collar and hood make it much more versatile than a typical wool long sleeve shirt.

Merino Ridge
Hyde Full-Zip Hoodie
This 100% merino wool hoodie uses a 275gsm merino terry cloth that doesn’t feel like wool. Like the Icebreaker, it’s a mid-weight hoodie, perfect for cool fall and spring days. It features a full-length zipper, thumbholes in the sleeves and a zipper on the pocket. The Hyde is cut on the longest side, which makes it look a little big, even though it’s not.

Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Hoodie
I like Outdoor Vitals Vantage Down Jacket so I couldn’t wait to try this hoodie. The 115 g/m² merino blend contains 63% merino, 29% polyester and 8% nylon. It fits well, more towards the base layer side of the spectrum than a sweatshirt style hoodie. Despite the reasonably high merino content, I think it feels like a synthetic fabric. It’s not necessarily bad – and the synthetic content makes for quick drying – but it’s something to be aware of.

Wool and Prince
Honeycomb embossed quarter zip
The Honeycomb Quarter-Zip from Wool&Prince is a waffle knit hoodie that leans toward the casual, non-technical side. This makes it ideal for traveling, where you may need to wear it in a more formal setting than around a campfire. It’s comfortable and dries easily overnight (another plus for traveling).
There is a shortage of merino wool for children. Perhaps the price of a product that children may outgrow in a few months makes the economic situation unattractive for manufacturers. Either way, very few companies offer children’s merino. This Minus33 hoodie actually doesn’t come in kids’ sizes, but the women’s extra-small model fits my 10-year-old daughter perfectly and continues to fit her at 11 years old. You’ll want to check out the fit chart on Minus33 for your own kids, but if they fit you, this is a fantastic hoodie. It’s very hot (and my daughter is always cold) and durable enough to withstand the lives of children, climbing trees and running through the woods, and hand warmers pair well with mittens in cold weather. Best of all, when kids are involved, this one can be machine washed and dried. It will not shrink, lose its shape and colors will not bleed.
A growing number of studies have shown that there are PFAs (hormone-disrupting chemicals commonly used in a number of plastics) in regular sportswearlike leggings and sports bras. If, like me, you’re looking to replace your polyester clothing with natural fibers, then the Ibex 100% Merino Wool Shak Jacket is the natural candidate to replace your (my) worn out garment. Best Patagonia Sweater ($169).
I took this jacket on a trip to Ireland this spring. It’s surprisingly dense and soft to the touch. It kept me warm on windy 30-degree days, layered easily under my rain jacket and over my tank top, and looked stylish enough to go out to dinner. In the west of Ireland, at least (“I like your sweater!” many Irish people said). It’s not as compact as a synthetic diaper, nor as lightweight, but it’s much prettier and it won’t feel like drool on your skin when it’s wet. —Adrienne So
The Best Grid Merino Fleece Jacket

Merino Ridge
Cloudripper Merino Grid Fleece Jacket
Checkered fleece is awesome. It’s warm for its weight and very breathable, making it ideal for highly aerobic activities. Despite all this, I prefer the comfort of merino and I take my merino mid layers hiking even though there is a definite weight penalty. Thanks to the Ridge Merino Cloudripper Jacket, I can now have my merino and eat my grid fleece too. Ridge has combined grid fleece with merino wool to give you the benefits of both, keeping the merino against your skin, but using grid fleece to improve ventilation and make the jacket much lighter. The big guy I tested weighs just 16.1 ounces on my scale. That’s 4 ounces more than Patagonia R1 Air Hoodie ($199)probably the most popular mesh fleece jacket, but I found the Cloudripper to be considerably warmer than the Air.
Cloudripper jackets (there is also a 1/2 zip version and a round neck version) are made up of two fabrics. The first is a wool fleece (265 g/m²) made from 69% merino, 15% recycled polyester, 13% nylon and 3% elastane. The secondary fabric is a grid fleece (180 g/m²) composed of 51% recycled polyester, 41% merino wool and 8% Lycra. More traditional gridded fleece with a higher polyester count is used primarily on the hood and lower back, while anything that might touch your skin (if you don’t have a base layer) is merino.
I’ve been testing the Cloudripper full zip for about a month now, and it’s quickly become my go-to. middle layer about the cool autumn mornings and evenings that have settled in where I live. It has proven itself on some early morning bike rides, where it strikes a balance between keeping me warm when I start and venting the excess heat I generate once I get going. It also doesn’t stink like my purely polyester grid fleece. It’s the best of grid fleece, married with the best of merino wool, to create what could be the ultimate technical midlayer.
If you have any concerns regarding the use goose down jackets As an insulating layer, merino wool is also a good substitute for synthetic insulation. The vests are like cheat code layering if you like to keep your body warm but your arms mobile, or if you want to get an extra hint of warmth without adding too much bulk. I like to layer the Ibex Wool Aire Vest under my usual wool coat or raincoat if I’m going out for the night or going on a long run. —Adrienne So
Best Merino Wool T-Shirts
Wool might not seem like a good choice for a summer t-shirt, but merino is surprisingly comfortable even when it’s hot. Up to a certain point anyway. On humid days over 90 degrees Fahrenheit I usually wear cotton or linen, but anything below 90 degrees and I wear merino. There are a ton of merino T-shirts out there, so many in fact that we now have a guide dedicated just to the best merino t-shirts. Here are our favorites from this guide.
Best Versatile Merino T-Shirt
The Huckberry Proof 72 Hour Merino Tee is my favorite all-around merino tee. The fit and style isn’t too sporty, making it more versatile than a more technical t-shirt. It’s an incredibly soft T-shirt, thanks to the weave of 150 g/m² superfine merino wool (16.5 microns). It’s a blend of 87% merino and 13% nylon, which gives it some stretch, with the downside that it will start to smell sooner than a 100% m t-shirt. erinos. Since I’ve been wearing it for about a year, I’ve figured out the exact name. You can get about three days out of it before needing to wash it (depending on the room temperature and what you’re doing, but generally this one will last three days).
I really like that this shirt comes in a wide variety of colors, more than any other shirt I’ve tested. Proof uses the exact same fabric to make long sleeve t-shirtsas well as poles And Henleyif you’re looking for something more than a T-shirt.
Best technical merino wool t-shirt
OK, but what about when you want a more technical fit, with flatlock seams and offset seams? When I go hiking, backpacking, paddleboarding, pretty much anything outdoors, this is the T-shirt I reach for first. Its lightweight jersey knit (84% merino 145 g/m², 16% synthetic) is soft and comfortable, not too hot in the sun (it also has a UPF 20 rating), quite warm when it’s cool. It’s also durable (I’ve been practicing jiu jitsu in this shirt for years and it’s been great) and machine washable. You can even put it in the dryer, no need to baby this T-shirt.
Most Luxurious Merino T-Shirt
As I say in our guide to the best merino T-shirtsif I could only have one merino T-shirt, it would be this one. This is the softest, most luxurious merino shirt I’ve tested. It’s made from 95% merino wool, which means it can take a while for it to start smelling, and it’s great when you want to travel light: bring two and it’s all you need half the world away. Did I mention how soft it is? It reminds me more of cashmere than merino. Taylor Stitch says it’s because it uses a mercerization process on its wool. Either way, it’s sweet. Very, very soft. My only real complaint here is the very limited color selection. Taylor Stitch generally has a heather blue and heather black available at all times, and from time to time other colors will be available on a very limited basis.
Best Merino Wool T-Shirt for Travel
The Unbound Merino T-shirt has long been a favorite among WIRED readers, and it’s long been a favorite among travelers. It’s very soft, and because it’s made from 100% merino wool, it will stay odor-free longer than any blended shirt. It’s also lightweight and folds up into a small roll, which is perfect if you’re looking to simplify to a bag (really, is there any other way to travel?). I love how soft these shirts are and they dry the fastest of all the merino t-shirts I’ve tested.
Best Merino T-Shirt for Women

Ibex
Women’s Goat Short Sleeve Crewneck Sweater
The Goat Short Sleeve Crew from Ibex has a few differences from my previous favorite active merino wool tee, the Artilect Utility ($55). The size is a little looser, making it a little harder to wear as a layer or under a climbing harness. The wool blend is also higher: 89% 150gsm merino wool, compared to 60% for Utilitee, so it’s much softer and much less stretchy. However, it remains surprisingly versatile and keeps me warm in the shade, while still wicking away sweat once above the tree line.—Adrienne So
Best Merino Sweaters
Yes, wool sweaters. You might need something heavier. Why not try the merino version of the tried and true wool sweater? They are warm, soft and do not itch.

Finistère
Furlong crew neck sweater
Finisterre takes its name from a promontory in the North Atlantic, which takes its name from the Latin “Finis Terrae”, roughly “end of the earth”. This sweater is soft and warm enough for a trip to the ends of the earth. It’s 100% mid-weight merino wool, with a traditional Irish-made Donegal yarn, where the flecks of color come from, giving it the textured, rustic look of an old fisherman’s sweater. A fisherman from the end of the world. Indeed it is a very thick sweater that I reserve mainly for the coldest days, but when you need it the Furlong is there for you. Note that the women’s version has a different name, but is otherwise very close to the men’s Furlong.
OK, so these are alpaca fibers, not merino wool. Technically, it’s 65% royal alpaca fiber and 35% recycled nylon. Like merino wool, alpaca offers natural thermoregulation, allowing you to be comfortable in a wide range of temperatures. It also has similar odor resistant properties. In the end, what I like about this sweater is less the technical capabilities (even if they are excellent) and more simply the fact that it is very soft and comfortable. This sweater is toward the lightweight end of the spectrum (around 15 ounces), but warm. It works well under a jacket or on its own, and it comes in a wide range of colors.
Socks, underwear and bras
You could argue that this is the true base layer, but we’ll skip that and just say that merino wool underwear, socks, and bras are much nicer than their synthetic counterparts. The caveat is that while merino wool is very soft, most products in this category are blends, usually with some form of nylon. However, if you haven’t tried merino underwear yet, you’re in for a treat. After testing dozens of them, these are our favorites.
Darn Tough socks are WIRED’s favorite. They’re great for skiing, hiking, climbing, and just about anything else you want to do. These blends vary by weight, but most are about 50% nylon and 50% merino, which makes them dry a little faster than pure merino while still remaining nice and warm and comfortable. Darn Tough socks also last. Mine have now lasted two years with no worn areas or holes in sight. If you develop holes, Darn Tough socks come with a unconditional lifetime guarantee. You can return them for another pair, without needing a receipt, which is kind of crazy considering the abuse hiking socks take.
Minus33 socks are my favorite merino socks. I have several pairs of light and midweight and even a pair of the Expedition, although these are so thick and warm that I rarely wear them (they’re perfect with temperatures dropping below 0F though). My favorites are the Mountain Heritage Lightweight Wool Boot Sockswhich are perfect for hiking or to wear around town. Minus33 doesn’t publish a blend breakdown for these, but I’d guess they’re about 60/40 wool and nylon, with plenty of softness and stretch.
Best Merino Underwear for Men
The phrase “wool underwear” might conjure up images of an 1800s lumberjack with hair growing through the weaves of his itchy, warm long johns, but that’s not what the merino underwear we tested looks like. In most cases these are blends, also with nylon.
Wool&Prince’s 6.5 inch wool boxers are the softest and most comfortable merino boxers I have tested. These boxers are the best merino boxers for a very simple reason: they don’t ride up when you move. For what? Because the weave on the legs is vertical, which allows the fabric to stretch without always riding up. I do squats, lunges, climb stairs, do juijitsu, and these boxers stay in place. I also like that the merino count is quite high (for boxers) at 75 percent (the rest being 22 percent nylon and 3 percent spandex), and the 250 g/m² fabric strikes a good balance between being very durable, but not so heavy that you can’t wear them in the heat.
These are the only 100% merino base layers I’ve tested (there’s elastic at the waist, but it’s surrounded by wool), and they’re also one of my favorites, especially in cold weather. They are longer than any other boxers I have tried. They’re 170gsm, which makes them a little lighter, but because they have a higher merino content, they’re the warmest I’ve tested. After years of testing merino base layers, these are my favorite on all but the warmest days.

Woolly
Everyday boxer
Thanks to WIRED readers for alerting us to Woolly. These 100% merino (190 g/m²) boxers are fantastic and affordable. They ventilate well and adapt to changing conditions to keep you comfortable even on days when the weather starts hot and ends cold, or as I like to call it, while hiking in the mountains. They are on the shorter side with a 4 inch inseam.

Unbound Merino
Merino Boxers
Unbound boxers are very soft and comfortable. They’re 84 percent merino wool, 12 percent nylon, and 4 percent spandex, so they’re a little stretchy. The 180 g/m² merino is light enough for even the hottest days.

Chow down
Pack of 2 ultra merino boxers
KUIU boxers have a pleasant, fitted cut, very soft and very breathable. This is Nuyarn, a blend of 83 percent merino wool, 12 percent nylon and 5 percent Lycra. There’s enough synthetic to keep them stretchy and snug, but the wool content keeps them from smelling.

Icebreaker
Boxer Merino 150 Anatomica Long
These Icebreakers are a blend like many others here (83 percent merino, 12 percent nylon, 5 percent spandex), but lighter at 150 g/m². They fit true to size. I prefer the long version linked here, but there is shorter version if you prefer.

Ibex
Natural boxer shorts
These Ibex boxers are wonderfully soft and come in more colors than most others here, adding some lovely variety to your wardrobe. They are made from 83% merino wool, 12% nylon and 5% elastane.
Best Merino Underwear for Women
Merino underwear for women is really difficult to do well. While it’s thin and stretchy enough to be comfortable, it tends to lose its shape and stretch in the washing machine (I air dry my clothes, but you should be able to throw your underwear in a washing machine and make them last). Such was unfortunately the fate of pairs of ibexes And Wool and underwear that I tried. They shrank and warped instantly, despite drying on the line.
Of the other pairs I’ve tried, the two best are Branwyn’s underwear and not related. Unbound’s underwear is made from 60% merino, 34% nylon and 6% elastane at a rather impressive 290 g/m². It’s both durable enough to survive washing (I air dried them) and comfortable enough to wear under my clothes (although there are no circumstances in which I would consider a wool thong to be comfortable).—Adrienne So
Branwyn makes what they call merino wool performance sets. I am a fan of Branwyn’s clotheswho are all Oeko-Tex 100 certifiedmeaning each component of the garment has been independently tested against a list of up to 350 toxic chemicals. This is one of the most well-known and respected consumer safety labels. These run true to size. (I guess it’s important to note here that I’m a small-breasted woman and Branwyn makes a Busty Bra ($62) if you need more support.)
However, it’s not encouraging enough to go for a run, which is why Branwyn started the Racerback bra ($85). It’s pretty impressive that Branwyn got merino wool to be compressive enough for medium impact activity. I love that it provides full coverage, without annoying little twisted straps and padding. This eliminates the need to switch from cotton “everyday” underwear to tight nylon “sports” underwear every time I want to do something active, which is all the time. —Adrienne So

Icebreaker
Mermaid Good
I only have one Branwyn bra, but they are the bras I wear every other day of my life. Like Icebreaker’s men’s underwear, they’re 83% merino, 12% nylon, and 5% spandex, and they run true to size. —Adrienne So

Wool&
Roam Convertible Wrap Bra
Wool’s merino fabric is the softest I’ve felt in my life, probably because the blend has a much lower merino content, 68% merino wool, 25% nylon, and 7% spandex. I tried these and Wool underwear. They’re incredibly soft but overpriced compared to our other options, and you need to size up. —Adrienne So
The Best Everyday Merino Clothing
I admit that when I started this guide years ago, I thought of merino wool primarily as an outdoor fabric. It’s great for that, but I’ve since discovered that merino is good for everything, especially for traveling, since it can be worn multiple times without any odor. I tried merino pants, dress shirts, e nworkout, hats and more. The best things I’ve tried are below.
Best Merino Dress Shirt
Photography: Scott Gilbertson
Suitable fabric
Reda merino wool shirt
The Reda Dress Shirt from Proper Cloth is one of the nicest things I’ve ever tried. The photographs really don’t do justice to the quality of this shirt in person. As you would expect from merino, the Reda is nicely breathable, much lighter and more breathable than your typical dress shirt. I found it quite comfortable even in the summer humidity. The Reda fabric, however, is thin and moisture-wicking, which means you see a little sweat on the arms when it’s hot. The good news of course is that it won’t retain any odor.
I highly suggest keeping this one around for a bit. I machine washed it in cold water and let it dry flat (which was pretty quick), but you’ll probably want to give it a light squeeze so it doesn’t wrinkle. If you’re traveling, storing them will give you a few wrinkles, but it’s nothing you can’t get out quickly enough. The big question I had was: how durable will this product be? Given the thinness of the fabric and the sometimes fragile nature of merino when spun so finely, I expected there to be obvious signs of wear fairly quickly. Fortunately, I was wrong. Over three months of regular use has done nothing to this shirt, it looks as good as the day I received it.
These relaxed and super comfortable sweatpants from Ridge Merino are some of the most comfortable pants I’ve ever worn. I don’t train with them often, I’ve never gone jogging with them (or I did yoga, it could be a soft j), but they are perfect in the house. It’s 100% merino wool (275 gsm) with what Ridge calls terry cloth (they look like sweatpants).
This long sleeve button down shirt from Woolly is much more casual than the Proper Cloth shirt above. It’s more what you might call business casual. It’s comfortable, soft, well made and has the 100% merino benefit of being odor resistant. The only thing I don’t really like is the slightly shimmery look, but that’s just a personal preference.
