Over the weekend, Epic added skins to Fortnite based on the move indie co-op climbing game Culminate. If you want to use one of these skins in the popular Battle Royale, you’ll have to pay more than double what it costs to buy an actual copy of Culminate on Steam. Ouch.
On March 21, Epic partnered with Culminate developer Aggro Crab to add a series of Culminate-themed cosmetic items Fortnite in-game store. The main objective is a customizable scout skin based on the playable and lovable characters of Culminate. To purchase the base Peak Scout skin in Fortnitewhich includes some customizable options and a backpack, you will need to deposit 2,000 V-Bucks. 2,400 V-Bucks costs you $23 so let’s say 2,000 is about $20. During this time, only one copy of Culminate will cost you $8.

As pointed out by Twitter user cuzl2 (and many others online), if we do some basic calculations, that means this one Culminate-The themed skin and backpack cost more than twice the normal price of the indie game they came from.
But wait, it’s worse. Culminate is currently on sale as part of the big Spring Steam Sale event. So now, Culminate only costs $5. This means you can buy four copies of the online co-op climbing game on Steam for the price of a single skin in Fortnite. This doesn’t seem right! Yet here we are. I just hope the Aggro Crab developers get a decent share of the sales.
As cuzl2 pointed out in the viral post I linked above, before Epic’s recent increase in the cost of V-Bucks, THE Culminate the skin would have cost about $18. For those who monitor at home, it is still more than Culminate quite a bit. But you have to understand that Epic has bills to pay and needs extra money, okay? Have a little sympathy for the company behind one of the most widely used video game engines in the world and the creator of one of the most successful live service games of the last decade.
