THANKS Voyagepro for sponsoring this post.

Although most of us love to travel, preparing for a trip can be a little stressful. And for me, packing is the worst part of all. The good news is that these packing tips will change that. With the right approach, you can pack smarter, lighter and faster every time. Here are ten of the best packing tips for 2026 to prepare like a pro.

1

Make a packing list and check it twice There’s nothing worse than forgetting to pack something you really need or lying awake the night before your trip worrying that you’ve missed something. Been there, done that. Avoid stress altogether by starting with a list.

Making a list allows you to see exactly what you need and specify anything additional. It’s also incredibly convenient when shopping for your trip and prevents you from forgetting the things you need most. Forgetting simple items can end up costing you a lot of money when replacing them abroad. Are you going somewhere sunny? I’ve seen the same brands of sunscreen that cost a few dollars at home priced at triple or more at some Caribbean resorts.

Start your list at least a week before your trip and add to it as things come to mind. Divide it into categories to make it easier to navigate.

Categories to include in every packing list:

Documents: passport, identity document, travel insurance, booking confirmations, a photocopy of your passport kept separately Clothes: outfits per day plus a change, layering pieces, swimsuits Toiletries: travel size for hand luggage only, regular size for checked baggage Electronic: phone, chargers, external battery, universal adapter, headphones Drugs : daily prescriptions, painkillers, stomach remedies, antihistamines Comfort items: neck pillow, eye mask, travel snacks 2

Clothing Packing Tips: Roll, Cube, and Apply the 5-4-3-2-1 Rule When packing your clothes into your suitcase or bag, expert travelers agree: You can fit more if you roll your clothes. Start by placing the heaviest rolled pieces like jeans and sweaters on the bottom and work your way up to the lighter pieces like socks and underwear. Rolling also helps you avoid wrinkles, unlike folding, which can leave shirts and blouses as a hot mess.

Try to wrap your clothes with fabrics that are not prone to wrinkling. Rayon is not your travel friend. And just because you can fit more doesn’t mean you should. Leave room for items and souvenirs you might pick up while traveling.

A game-changing tip for 2026: packing cubes have become common practice for organized travelers. They compress clothing, separate categories and significantly speed up repacking to multiple destinations. A set of three to four cubes of varying sizes is one of the best travel investments you can make.

Also note: the 5-4-3-2-1 rule. Pack five tops, four bottoms, three layers, two pairs of shoes and a hat. Choose neutral colors that mix and match with any outfit and you’ll have more outfit combinations than you think with a small bag.

Packing smartly starts with the right luggage. The Travelpro Maxlite range keeps things light without sacrificing durability.

3

Choose the right fabrics Your choice of fabric makes a bigger difference than most people realize. Merino wool has become the gold standard for travel clothing and for good reason. It resists odors, regulates temperature in hot and cold conditions, dries quickly and rarely wrinkles. A merino wool top can be worn for several days without issue, meaning you can pack far fewer clothes.

Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon blends are also great for traveling. They are light, dry quickly and are compact. Avoid cotton for cold or humid climates as it absorbs moisture and stays damp. Rayon wrinkles a lot and is best left at home entirely.

The bottom line: Choose fabrics that work hard for you, and you’ll carry a smaller, lighter, more versatile bag every time.

4

Never check your most essential items This may seem obvious, but it bears repeating: never put your most important and valuable items in your checked baggage. This includes your passport and ID card, money and credit cards, wallet, electronics, expensive sunglasses, jewelry, and anything else you would be devastated to lose.

If you need daily medications or supplements, keep them with you as well. Sometimes airlines lose or delay luggage, and if that happens, you want to have everything that really matters in your hands. A small tech pouch or document organizer inside your carry-on bag makes it easy to access everything without digging.

By 2026, Bluetooth baggage trackers like AirTags have become essential for checked baggage. Slipping one into your suitcase before checking in gives you real-time location data and great peace of mind, especially on connecting flights. If your bag is delayed or rerouted, you’ll know exactly where it is.

One more thing: consider travel insurance before each trip, especially international. If your bag is lost, your flight is canceled or a medical issue cuts your trip short, travel insurance can save you thousands of dollars. This is one of the most often overlooked but truly valuable things that a traveler can take with them before leaving home. Our guide to how travel contributes to your overall well-being is a good reminder of why travel protection is as important as planning it.

5

Packaging Tips for Liquids and Safety in 2026 The TSA’s basic liquid rule hasn’t changed, but enforcement has gotten stricter, and there are some important updates for 2026 that are worth knowing about. According to the Official TSA Guidelineswhen you bring carry-on baggage, you are entitled to a 1 liter transparent bag containing liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes. These are limited to travel-size containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. The TSA is strict about the size of containers, not how full they are. An oversized container will be confiscated even if it is almost empty.

You don’t want the TSA to take that expensive foundation or hair product, so check the sizes before you pack. Foods you might assume are safe, like peanut butter or honey, will also be confiscated if they exceed the limit.

Important TSA and Security Updates 2026:

Lithium Batteries and Power Banks must travel in your hand luggage, never checked in. If you are checking your carry-on baggage at the boarding gate, remove your external battery and bring it into the cabin with you. Laptops must always be removed at security checkpoints unless you have TSA PreCheck. Powders More than 12 ounces in your carry-on bag may trigger additional screening, especially on international routes. REAL ID is now required for domestic flights within the United States. Make sure your license is REAL ID compliant or bring your passport as proof of identification. Smart luggage with non-removable batteries is prohibited on all US airlines. If your bag has a built-in battery that requires a tool to remove it, it can’t fly. TSA PreCheck or CLEAR worth every penny in 2026. PreCheck lets you keep your shoes, your laptop in your bag, and your liquids packaged.
Keep your quart-sized bag of liquids in an exterior pocket for quick, stress-free access and security.

6

Switch to solid toiletries for cabin travel One of the biggest improvements you can make to your packing routine is switching to sturdy toiletries for carry-on-only travel. Shampoo bars, solid conditioners, solid deodorants, and solid sunscreens are all TSA friendly because they are not liquid. They also take up much less space than their liquid counterparts and never leak in your bag.

Most solid toiletries are highly concentrated, meaning a single bar of shampoo can last as many washes as a full bottle of liquid shampoo. They’re also lighter, which is important when trying to meet luggage weight limits. For everyday skin and hair care products, the solid format has improved significantly in quality over the past few years and is definitely worth a try before your next trip.

If you prefer liquid toiletries, remember that hotels and most accommodations provide shampoo and soap. Often you don’t need to bring them at all, especially for shorter journeys.

7

Packing Tips to Avoid Baggage Fees in 2026 Airline baggage fees have increased significantly and in 2026 they continue to climb. Many major U.S. carriers now charge between $40 and $50 for a first checked bag each way, which adds up quickly for a round trip. Traveling with carry-on luggage only when possible is one of the easiest ways to save real money on every trip.

The key to cabin-only travel is to be strategic. Carry your largest items on the plane. Bring a versatile pair of shoes that work in multiple settings. Use packing cubes to compress clothing. Switch to solid toiletries. And always weigh your bag before leaving the house.

A portable luggage scale is one of the most underrated travel tools you can own. Most carry-on bags have a weight limit (usually 15 to 22 pounds depending on the airline) and checking in at the gate with an overweight bag means paying to check it in, which defeats the purpose. A small digital scale costs almost nothing and can save you a verita ble headache at the airport. To learn more about how to keep your wallet happy while traveling, our tips for traveling on a budget are worth reading.

8

Use your hotel’s laundry service Many people check into a hotel, see this laundry bag, and think it’s just something business travelers use. But it can be a real great service to take advantage of. Staying somewhere with DIY laundry on site is even better. I come back from a trip with a suitcase full of perfectly clean clothes. Who wants to come home with a mountain of laundry after a trip?

If hotel laundry seems expensive, you have options. Pick a few key parts that you know you’ll need and just get them cleaned. Look for a local laundromat or dry cleaner to get more affordable prices. I also washed light clothes in the bathroom sink and hung them to dry on the balcony or in the shower. This works well for synthetic fabrics and saves you an extra day or two with the same pieces.

Being prepared to do laundry mid-trip is what makes lightweight luggage truly durable, especially on long trips. This completely changes the calculations.

9

Prepare your electronics, downloads and anti-theft equipment Preparing electronics is one of the most commonly overlooked parts of packing and one of the most stressful to deal with while traveling. Before you go: Fully charge everything, download maps and offline entertainment, and organize all your cables and chargers in a dedicated pouch.

Download offline Google Maps for your destination before you go. Don’t assume you’ll have reliable Wi-Fi or affordable data when you need directions. Download translation apps with offline language packs for international travel. Download entertainment for long flights. Assuming connectivity when you need it is how people get stuck and stressed.

If you’re traveling abroad, bring a universal adapter. Many modern devices are dual voltage (check the label for 100-240 V), but hair tools and some older electronics are not. A portable power bank is non-negotiable for long travel days.

See also

For travelers concerned about their security in 2026, anti-theft equipment is worth considering. An RFID blocking wallet protects your cards from contactless skimming in busy areas. A money belt worn under clothing protects your passport and emergency cash. These are small investments that protect that from things that are really hard to replace while traveling.

10

Leave room for what you will bring home One of the most common packing mistakes is completely filling your bag on the way out. Souvenirs, gifts, local finds and impulse purchases are part of the joy of traveling. If your bag is already full, you pay overweight fees or leave your new favorites behind.

Pack with about 20% of your bag empty when you leave. If you tend to do a lot of shopping, bring a collapsible duffel bag that stores flat and can be checked on the way home. It takes up almost no space on the way out and offers you unlimited flexibility on the way back. You can also ship items home from your destination before you leave, which many post offices and international shipping services readily accept.

And don’t forget: your luggage scale comes in handy here, too. Check the weight of your bag before going to the airport and avoid ambushes at boarding controls.

Leave a little breathing room on the day of departure. In the future, you will be grateful when you find something worth taking home.

“The best packers aren’t the ones who fit the most in their bags. They’re the ones who leave the most at home.”

It all starts with the right luggage I’ve traveled a lot over the years and I can tell you that your luggage can make or break a trip. Keep your trip smooth with high-quality, well-designed luggage that helps you organize everything. I hate being weighed down, so the lighter the better. We love Travelpro’s Maxlite luggage range. Maxlite is Travelpro’s lightest range whilst being extremely durable and stylish. It’s made from a polyester fabric with a DuraGuard coating that resists water and stains, so it stays looking good even in a downpour or if it’s tossed onto the luggage carousel. It will happen. The Maxlite collection is available in five stunning colors, including Dusty Rose, Azure Blue, Slate, Midnight Blue and Black, so you can coordinate your luggage to your personal style. And my favorite part? They ride like a dream.

Some of our favorite pieces: Voyagepro Maxlite 5 21″ expandable carry-on suitcase

The Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner: compact on the outside, surprisingly spacious on the inside.

Even though it looks small, this one can actually hold a lot. Perfect for a weekend getaway, it features a zipper that allows it to expand for even more space. Straps help keep your belongings in place while additional pockets help you stay organized. And the best? No need to drag this behind you. The wheels roll as smooth as silk and do all the hard work. I am completely won over by this bag. Here is the interior:

Interior straps, a zippered divider and clever pockets make organization easy.

Voyagepro Maxlite 5 wheeled travel bag

Boy, do I love roller bags. This one makes a great overnight bag as well as a carry-on and has deep exterior pockets that protect the items you need most while allowing easy access on the fly.

The wheeled travel bag is the ultimate flexible travel companion, whether at home, as a carry-on or as an overnight bag.

I’m pretty hard on my luggage, so I need bags that are super durable and can withstand anything. Travelpro performs extensive testing on all of its luggage to ensure it is up to the rigors of real-life travel. Travelpro also designs its luggage to help you pack more efficiently, making traveling easier and less stressful and giving you more time to focus on what really matters: a fantastic trip.
