After a cold and dark winter, many of us are eagerly awaiting spring. While there are many beautiful things about winter, there are also many wonderful things about spring. If you prefer warmth to cold, spring is something to look forward to. Most of us love spring flowers and longer days, but how many of us have tried new activities specifically because it’s spring?
Throughout the seasons, unique activities are offered to us as a family. When I was a child, my mother planned seasonal activities to keep my sisters and I busy during each time of the year. Whether your family does it or not, there is something fun about participating in seasonal activities. If you want to try some ideas this spring, here are five activities to try:

1. Gardening
Creating a garden is a spring activity for the whole family. I have known many people who love gardening. I have a relative who is very knowledgeable about all kinds of plants and flowers. They have their own outdoor garden as well as many indoor plants. Although I have never been a gifted gardener, gardening is always relaxing, rewarding and joyful. Creating a garden is ideal for those who like to see their hard work rewarded.
Many of us think that gardening is just for older people, but that’s a misnomer. People of all ages can enjoy gardening, including your children. When I was a child, my mother asked my sisters and me to start gardening, and although it was difficult at times, it was something I looked forward to doing every day. Spring is a great time to start a garden because most flowers and plants thrive then. Even if you’ve never had a green thumb, you can still try.
If you or a family member suffers from depression, getting out in the morning to garden will be beneficial. Early morning sunlight is ideal for those suffering from depression and can help relieve some of their symptoms. As someone who personally struggles with depression, I can attest that this is true and it will help put you in a more positive frame of mind if you’re out and about during the morning hours.
Even if no one in your family suffers from depression, gardening is a great spring activity. Collecting seeds, picking flowers and deciding as a family where to place each plant can be an entire family activity. Your family will learn to work as a team as you take turns tending the garden. Not only will this be a great spring activity, but it could also turn into a long-term family garden.

2. Book club
A second spring activity for the whole family is a book club. I understand that not everyone likes books, but give books a chance. Personally, I was never interested in reading until my mother homeschooled me. The first book that made me want to read was Dr. Dolittle by Hugh Lofting. Just try a few books and find the ones that resonate with you or your children. When choosing a book for your family book club, choose one that interests everyone.
If it’s impossible to find a book that everyone finds interesting, let everyone read and discuss their own book each week. Starting a book club doesn’t have to be a huge task. Even if one of your children doesn’t like books, still encourage them to try participating in the book club. Thanks to the Internet, imagination and original thinking have come to a halt. Through a book club, perhaps some of the beauty of imagination and original thinking will return.

3. Parks Tour
A third spring activity for the whole family is the Tour des Parcs. Named after the Tour de France, my mother had this idea when my sisters and I were kids. The idea was that we would visit a different park in our city every day and see which ones we liked best. It was a fun activity that we all enjoyed during the spring months. Spring is often cooler than summer, but it is warm enough to spend long periods outside.
If your family loves the outdoors or parks, this is a great activity for this spring. Map out all parks in advance and keep them in a document. After visiting a park, you can check it off, rate it, and add comments about how the family feels about the park. If your family really enjoyed the park, give it 5/5 stars; if it wasn’t the best park, give it a lower rating. If the park was absolutely terrible, write a note next to it saying it would be best not to return. However, if the park is really great, include a note next to the park name that it’s definitely a park to come back to someday.

4. Evening walks
A fourth spring activity for the whole family is evening walks. During the winter months, going out for a walk after dark is not reasonable. However, in spring, evening walks are a real blessing. For most working adults, we don’t get off school until after 5 p.m. and children may leave school at different times. After a busy day of work, school transfers, and homework, everyone will need some time to get outside and stretch their legs. A nighttime walk is the perfect way to meet this need.
Evening walks are a great way to reconnect with loved ones and give them a safe space to share their feelings. Even if your whole family doesn’t want to go for a walk, try walking with your child(ren) who do. If none of your kids are up for a walk, try taking one with your spouse and spending some quality time together. The children could ride their bikes while the adults walked. This way everyone can exercise and enjoy the sun.

5. Crafts for Rainy Days
One last spring activity for the whole family is rainy day crafts. Spring is known for its rainy days. Although this is not true everywhere, many places have spring as their rainy season. If this is true where you are in the world, rainy days can be a great excuse to spend the day DIYing. Even if your family isn’t crafty, doing a few crafts can be a fun way to spend a rainy day.
There are endless DIY crafts you can try during the spring months. Search online or purchase a craft book from a bookstore. Crafting can be difficult at times, but it is rewarding. If your family is artistic, this could be the perfect spring activity. Even if your family isn’t artistic, that doesn’t mean you can’t participate in crafts. Crafting is for everyone. Try to choose a profession that is not too difficult at first, then move on to more difficult professions. Consider hosting craft competitions and mentoring each other’s work, commemorating memories even on rainy spring days.
