5 Ways to Keep Faith in the Face of Fear

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the conviction of things not seen. »Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)

The human propensity for fear, other than a healthy respect for God’s character, is used by the enemy to distract us from the full life in Christ that we are called to live. Faith is a powerful muscle, but it must be developed in tandem with our relationship with Christ. With His Holy Spirit living within us, we have the power to thwart the fears that try to trip us up, harass us, and harass us. Faith protects us from unhealthy fear. Fear stands at the door of our destiny and challenges us to enter,» » writes Sharon Jaynes for “Your Daily Prayer”.It leads us to believe that if we cross the threshold, we will fail, or worse yet, God will fail us. Faith creates a barrier through which we can artfully filter fear, align it with God’s truth, and lay it at His feet. Developing a faith that overcomes fear requires daily discipline, constant prayer, knowing who God is, and recognizing who He says we are. Faith in the face of fear does not mean that we are never afraid; it means we place fear under the authority of God’s truth and choose to trust Him, one obedient step at a time.

Key Points

  • Faith in the face of fear does not mean that Christians are never afraid; it means placing fear under the authority of God’s truth.
  • Believers can grow in courage by placing their trust in God rather than relying on their own strength or control.
  • Scripture, prayer, endurance, and God’s eternal perspective help Christians stand firm when fear seems overwhelming.
  • A godly community can strengthen faith, as fear often grows in isolation, while encouragement helps believers bear one another’s burdens.
  • Self-care is important, but it should lead Christians to greater dependence on God, not greater self-reliance.

5 Ways to Choose Faith Over Fear

Here are five ways to grow in faith and overcome your fear.

1. Trust God rather than yourself

“Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence is from God.” 2 Corinthians 3:4-5

This verse answers a question posed a few chapters earlier in Paul’s letter, referring to the two stages of human life on earth. We either follow Christ and are saved, or we succeed of our own accord and perish. (NIVSB) If we are not willing to do the work of developing our faith, we will be caught in the current of fear. God has not given us a spirit of fear. » 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds, “but of the power of love and a sound mind”.

“Human beings are born with two fears: the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. » writes Dan Johnson for “Home Word” devotionals. “Fear is innate, so daily life in Christ requires replacing old fears with new ones. » Confident faith is rooted in quiet times with God and in following our Savior. Fear of God propels our confidence in who He says we are. Man’s fear is based on what the world says we should be. “The fear of God means nothing less than caring more about what God thinks than what people think,” to quote Mr. Johnson again, “To be like Christ means to transcend our biology and live as children of our great God. »

2. Build endurance when fear feels strong

“Consider him who endured such opposition for sinners, that you may not grow weary or be discouraged. » Hebrews 12:3

Fear is a common thread in humanity, and our reaction to it reveals the state of our faith. A long-distance runner must build up endurance and strength. We must constantly train ourselves to know and live God’s truth. It allows us to trade fear for peace, just as a runner goes through unbearable pain to complete the distance.

“Everyone has fears” assures Pastor Rick Warren in “Daily Hope”, “Your problem isn’t that you’re afraid. It’s what you do with the fear that really matters.” Jesus selflessly went through immense pain to get to the cross. When you train, this is the attitude you should adopt. Isaiah 41:10 said: “Therefore do not be afraid, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will support you with my right hand.” Sometimes, years later, we look back and follow His hand in our footsteps. But, just like a runner doesn’t feel fit after the first month of running, we become stronger with each faithful step.

3. Pray for God’s perspective on your fear

“The Lord frees the prisoners, the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. Psalm 146:7-8 ESV

Our vision of God is limited on this earth. As we develop our faith, we begin to gain insight into life through its eternal perspective. Its perspective is eternal. It’s fair.

“Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose help is in the LORD his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, who keeps the faith forever, who exercises justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. » Psalm 146:5-7an ESV

God exercises sovereign control, even if the earth collapses. When we are tempted to fear what we don’t understand, faith keeps us from losing our minds completely. “Reality tells us so many things that we spend our time worrying about, it doesn’t even happen,» writes Debbie McDanielLiving under the weight of “what ifs” is a difficult place to be.»

4. Let divine relationships strengthen your courage

A transparent relationship with God is a powerful weapon against fear. Things that we would not shout to a soul on this earth, we can freely bring into His presence. He hears us and is close to those who are brokenhearted. “There are no fearless Christians,» writes John Bloom of desiringGod.orgone of the telltale signs that He answers my prayers is that I am forced to face many situations and decisions that incite fear – the kind of fear that makes me want to retreat from the bold words and acts of love in Jesus’ name that those situations and decisions require.”

The VOICE paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 1:9 assures, “Count on this: God is faithful and in His faithfulness has called you into an intimate relationship with His Son, our Lord Jesus the Anointed.“Jesus was extremely transparent with his friends on earth. He washed their feet and explained to them everything the Father told him. Jesus cried with his friends, he prayed intimately with and for them, healed them, forgave them, and ultimately died for them…and for us. He calls us friends. He lives within us, and yet we often don’t let him in. We honor our fears of our God when we consider their strength to be greater than that of the One who conquered death.

There is no fear in love,» 1 John 4:18 assures, “But perfect love casts out fear, because fear is connected with punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.“Our Father placed us in community to support and encourage one another. »Fear and worry can consume you if you’re not careful,» wrote Ryan Duncanand it is important for Christians to surround themselves with a strong support system.» We’re not meant to live alone. It’s much scarier that way and it gives more power to the fear. Galatians 6:2 advises, “bear one another’s burdens, and thus you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Lean into community and trust that God has placed people nearby as extensions of His love.

5. Take care of yourself without letting it become independent

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own; you are bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

We cannot live our lives to the fullest if we are running on empty. God has made the Sabbath a part of our lives and it is important to honor it. It is wise to take healthy steps toward reaching the full potential God has intended for us, but neglecting our physical steps does not diminish His love for us. “Modern medical research has proven that worry can actually destroy your resistance to disease.“, wrote Greg LaurieExcessive worry can shorten your life.”

Self-care involves guarding God’s truth As our top priority, knowing our purpose determines the overall direction of our faith. “Paul says physical training has some value“, writes Kevin DeYoungIt’s good to want to take care of your body. But fear of man turns healthy self-care into an obsession with our shape, color and size..” God should be the one part of our routine that we cannot live without.

How can we keep faith in the face of fear every day?

Faith is listening and trusting beyond what we can see and understand. Scripture says that God protects the righteous and that we should cast our worries on Him because He cares for us. Faith over fear is choosing Him every day, even when something threatens to distract our attention. Keven DeYoung wrote about Jesus: “When it came to living a life of obedience to God, he knew better than to rely on the opinions of men..” The source of all community on this earth is God, but be careful not to place any other relationship above Him. Believe in a decision to focus on what He says is true instead of wondering about the “what ifs” in life. Christ never promised us an easy life, but he promised that we would not go through anything alone. Faith holds on for life when pain is inexplicable, unfair, and seemingly endless.
