President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana is no longer experiencing power outages, popularly known as dumsor, following efforts by his government to address the financial challenges that threatened electricity supply.
He said the administration had cleared its outstanding debts to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and introduced a payment system to ensure suppliers are paid promptly for electricity delivered to the national grid.
Addressing Ghanaians in Moscow, Russia, President Mahama said the government inherited about US$1.7 billion in unpaid obligations to IPPs, as well as arrears for gas supplied from the Jubilee Field and by ENI.
He said the debts had created tensions, with some power producers threatening to suspend electricity supply.
“With regard to energy, I can report that there’s no dumsor in Ghana. Everybody has adequate power. And that’s one of the areas that has been quite dramatic in terms of its management,” he said.
The President added that the government was now up to date with payments to IPPs.
“I’m happy to announce that we have cleared the IPP debt. That is, we are current. Any energy they supply today, we’re paying them,” he said.
He said a separate payment arrangement had also been introduced to address the remaining obligations, with initial payments followed by further settlements as they fall due.
According to President Mahama, the new arrangement has helped rebuild trust between the government and power producers while ensuring a more stable electricity supply.
He maintained that Ghana currently has sufficient power to meet the country's needs.
