Ryan Rickelton was left fuming after a mix-up ended a mammoth partnership with schoolmate Wiaan Mulder, as Matthew Breetzke didn't back down on a day of toil for the Aussies.

Here are the quick hits from day four of the third Test between Australia and South Africa.

After a simmering, tempestuous end to day three, the chat continued as the Proteas looked to fight back on day four.

Matthew Breetzke and Mitchell Starc drew the battlelines early, with the pair sharing a few tense words and Starc providing a mixture of death stares and wry smiles.

And Breetzke, who had provided Marnus Labuschagne with a remarkable leaping send-off on day one, was never likely to back down.

With him and Starc a couple overs into their stoush, the quick had the South African ducking underneath a bouncer.

Rising from his haunches, Breetzke cocked his head and poked out his tongue in Starc's direction, before grabbing his box and holding the pose.

Things were heating up — but the chat began to dissipate when Breetzke fell, before almost completely disappearing as Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder got stuck into their work.

At the start of South Africa's second innings, Pat Cummins had gone 314 balls without a Test dismissal, with his last wicket coming in the second innings in Durban.

For a man who averages a scalp just about every 22 balls in Test cricket, that's a fair drought.

The Australian captain ran in hard late on day three, and came close to breaking through with a line-ball LBW call, but started day four at Newlands still in search of a pole.

It took over an hour of play, but finally, he broke through.

Bowling back of a length and to a leg-side field, Cummins had the well-set Breetzke (43) out hooking to Mitchell Starc at backward square leg in.

After 372 wicketless deliveries, Cummins had broken the longest dismissal drought of his Test career, and the Proteas were five down with just an 81-run lead.

The wicketkeeper-batter played with supreme confidence and hardly presented an opportunity to the Aussie attack, managing the ebbs and flows of his innings to perfection.

Up the other end, Mulder was just as impressive, grinding the Australians into the dirt as he and Rickelton batted for the majority of the day in a mammoth 134-run, 319-ball partnership.

The pair looked completely at home together in the middle, and so they should — Rickelton and Mulder attended secondary school together at Johannesburg's St Stithians College.

After 218 balls and a whopping 12 overs in the 90s, Rickelton pushed the leg-side single that brought up his second Test ton, which he celebrated by embracing his old buddy on a red-letter day for St Stithians.

With Cummins seemingly long out of ideas, Rickelton having just brought up his century, and Labuschagne into his fourth over of the day, Australia was not even threatening to take a wicket.

But there was trouble brewing for the old friends in the middle.

Mulder had nailed his reverse sweep to backward point, where Josh Inglis made a fantastic stop and followed it with a quick release.

From the non-striker's end, Rickelton had raced out of the blocks and found himself all the way up the other end of the pitch.

Unfortunately for the centurion, Mulder was ball watching and completely unmoved, with Rickelton unable to get home as Labuschagne broke the stumps.

Speaking to ABC Sport at stumps, Rickelton was far from impressed — if not overly surprised — by his old schoolmate.

"Wiaan, he grates me sometimes because he drifts away in exactly that moment," Mulder said.

"He hit the shot and he just kind of ball-watched and it was an easy one, but sometimes he isn't really present and he can drift away.

"So it does frustrate me and I'm really irritated about that because we could have got a lot more tonight."

We hadn't seen a run-out all series before day four, but only a matter of minutes after the first, we were treated to a second.

Again, it was Labuschagne at the heart of it, brilliantly throwing down the stumps to have Gerald Coetzee on his way.

With South Africa having lost 4-16 and No.11 Kagiso Rabada joining Mulder at the crease, the start of the Australian run chase loomed large.

The all-rounder farmed the strike smartly, and after batting within himself for the majority of the day, began to take the game to the Australians.

After becoming the day's second St Stithians alumnus to cross three figures, he battered the Aussies, taking Cummins and then Nathan Lyon for massive leg-side sixes in consecutive overs.

With Temba Bavuma opting against a late declaration, Mulder and Rabada extended South Africa's lead by a further 36 runs before the centurion holed out on the final ball of the day.

Australia will begin its fourth innings at the start of the series' deciding day, requiring 288 runs for victory.
