Pointing out that women, irrespective of their age, were insulted and experienced violence in their homes, public places, workplaces, and in cyber space, the Chief Minister said the government was considering bringing in a special Act to protect women from attacks on social media, with a provision for imprisoning those found guilty.

Stressing the importance of financial independence, the Chief Minister said a projects would be launched this year to make all women Kudumbashree members financially independent. Products and services suited to the local area would be marketed with government assistance and support of a knowledge partner. “Financial independence will give women the confidence that they can live without depending on others. In this patriarchal society, women are yet to get many rights. The new generation is fighting for them and should be promoted.”

Mr. Satheesan said global perspectives on women’s safety and development were evolving and Keralam should become the first State in the country to adopt these so that women could enter the mainstream.

The new women’s policy should motivate women and inspire confidence in women. The viewpoints of people from all sectors would be gathered for framing a model women’s policy, Mr. Satheesan said.

No financial constraints would come in the way of implementing the women’s policy or schemes for them, he added.

Minister for Women and Child Development Bindhu Krishna who presided over the function said the women’s policy would not only ensure financial and technical support for women entrepreneurs but also representation in green economy and emerging areas of employment. Besides representation in local self-governments, women’s participation would be ensured be policy formulation, budget decisions, and administration.

Gender equality would become part of awareness of rights and in education. Adolescent and mental health, and postpartum depression would be addressed seriously. The opinions of all sections of people, including women and men from the new generation, would be collected to frame the policy.
