TDP-led NDA makes sweeping gains in ZPTC and MPTC elections across three Rayalaseema districts
Former Minister Roja breakes down in tears near the counting centre at Illathuru in Vijayapuram mandal and demands recounting when YSRCP nominee loses to the TDP contestant by three votes
Former Minister R.K. Roja in tears after the YSRCP’s Vijyapuram MPTC candidate loses to the TDP by three votes on Saturday.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led NDA alliance registered sweeping gains in the MPTC and ZPTC elections across Chittoor, Annamayya and Sri Sathya Sai districts, with counting progressing peacefully under tight security on Saturday.
In Chittoor district, the provisional MPTC seat tally placed TDP at 82, followed by JSP (five), the BJP (one) and the YSRCP (four).
Kuppam, Gudipalli, Ramakuppam, Vijayapuram and Nagari were among the important political centres attracting attention.
The counting in Vijayapuram mandal became a major talking point after the TDP candidate defeated the YSRCP nominee at Illathuru by three votes. Former Minister R.K. Roja broke down in tears near the counting centre while questioning the result and demanding a recount. In an emotionally charged moment, she reportedly threw away a water bottle offered by her driver.
The Madanapalle division results gave the YSRCP a mixed picture in the traditional bastion of former Minister Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy.
In Punganur, the TDP secured two MPTC seats, while the YSRCP, Jana Sena and an Independent won one each.
The outcome has raised questions about whether Mr. Ramachandra Reddy’s established political influence could translate into electoral gains at the grassroots level.
The TDP secured seven seats in Madanapalle against YSRCP’s four and five in Kurabalakota against one for the YSRCP. However, the YSRCP won five seats in Thamballapalle against TDP’s one, four in Peddamandyam, and four in Ramasamudram.
In Pedda Tippa Samudram (PTM), the TDP won three seats and YSRCP two. Nimmanapalle produced two seats each for the TDP and YSRCP, with Jana Sena winning one. Mulakalacheruvu saw one seat each for the TDP, Jana Sena and YSRCP, while TDP secured four in B. Kothakota.
In Sri Sathya Sai district, the provisional MPTC seat compilation placed the TDP at 29, YSRCP at six and BJP at two. Hindupur, Dharmavaram, Kadiri, Penukonda, Puttaparthi, Bukkapatnam and Chilamathur were among the important counting areas.
In Puttaparthi, Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar said there was tight security at the counting centres, with CCTV surveillance, barricades and regulated entry for authorised personnel and counting agents.
“Counting is being conducted strictly under the supervision of Returning Officers, who keep verifying round-wise results before formal declarations,” the SP said.
