Not a day goes by that I don’t come across some strange piece of technology on my social media pages, which immediately becomes my latest hyperfixation. As for my most recent wacky tech obsession? A sticker maker for kids.
I know what you’re thinking: why would someone in their 20s be so obsessed with a silly toy for a little kid? Well, if you’ve never seen Stickerbox before, you won’t understand where I’m coming from.
Designed for kids, but adults have the fun
Stickerbox was designed with one goal in mind: to keep children away from mobile and TV screens. Its creators, Arun Gupta and Bob Whitney, asked themselves a question: what if AI could fuel children’s imaginations instead of replacing them? Then came Stickerbox.
In short, Stickerbox uses your voice instructions and descriptions to generate a unique sticker, which you can then color, peel and stick wherever you want – and the creative possibilities are virtually endless. To get started, simply connect it to WiFi, download the companion app, then scan a QR code to pair. Then you are free to create many stickers by holding the button.
When it comes to your ideas, the sillier the better, I’d say, and I’ve seen users on TikTok asking for the most obscure stickers. For example, I’ve seen videos of people using prompts like “chicken in space” and even “Jesus playing basketball in elf shoes” – and it actually worked. It also works when you use famous names as prompts, like Bob Marley or this Martha Stewart example below, which I found particularly fun.
How does it work?
Inside the small 3.75-inch box is an intelligent computer, which uses Ideogram and the Flux generative AI model – both developed by Stable Diffusion. Together, the two take in your voice prompts, understand them, and produce an accurate picture of what you’re describing.
While you can get as creative as you want, Stickerbox draws the line when certain phrases are used because it is KidSAFE COPPA certified. This includes anything that is trademarked (e.g. Disney) and anything that involves violence, profanity, and explicit content.
I’ve admired Stickerbox from afar for some time, and despite its kid-friendly design, adults have flocked to the sticker maker like a moth to a flame. “But he’s just a sticker maker,” you hear yourself say, and yes, he is, but he’s a sticker maker with a really big brain, and one that I can’t wait to get my hands on.
