Cherry blossom season in Washington DC is one of those trips that rewards doing things right. The peak lasts a maximum of a week, often less, but the full flowering season lasts two to three weeks and the window always remains spectacular. Where you stay changes everything. That means peak bloom time, a hotel close enough to walk everywhere, and somewhere worth returning to at the end of the day. Hotel Washington delivers on all three, and it does so at a level that truly justifies the category it falls into.

We’ve been to DC before. We thought we knew what to expect. Cherry blossom season, with the right hotel behind you, turns out to be a completely different city. Two days, thousands of steps, an unforgettable rooftop dinner, and we left already planning for next year.

Washington DC Hotel entrance at night during cherry blossom season | Photo: Better Living The Washington Hotel is a Washington Historical Monument since 1917hosting world leaders, celebrities and dignitaries across more than a century of American history. Elvis stayed here while on his way to meet President Nixon at the White House. Harrison Ford allegedly bought drinks for the entire rooftop bar. This same roof was also featured in The Godfather II.

Today, it is a Forbes-verified 5-star luxury property with 326 guest rooms and suites, three distinct dining destinations, a full-service spa, and one of the most coveted skyline views in the country. If you follow our luxury hotel reviewsthis one belongs on your radar. The reputation is well deserved.

Arrival and first impressions The Washington DC Hotel Lobby Lounge | Photo: Better Living We arrived around 2 p.m., two hours before the standard 4 p.m. check-in. The valet service was prompt and really friendly, and the front desk held our bags without hesitation and offered to alert us when the room was ready. Most hotels make early arrivals an imposition. This one didn’t. We dropped our bags off and headed straight to explore, which seemed like exactly the right way to start a cherry blossom trip.

Upon entering the lobby for the first time, the immediate impression is of space and light. More open and airy than one might expect from a historic downtown property, with generous seating throughout and an energy that is welcoming rather than intimidating. The design is gradually revealed. Black and white checkerboard marble floors. Shiny brass wall panels engraved with graphic patterns. Custom artwork at the front desk that looks both playful and sophisticated.

During cherry blossom season, a floral installation complete with a neon Washington Hotel sign occupies a corner of the lobby and becomes an immediate focal point. We stopped to pick it up before we even found the elevator.

Washington DC Hotel Check-in Lobby and Reception | Photo: Better Living Design rewards anyone who pays attention to it. The lobby arches represent the interest groups typically lobbied for in the nation’s capital. The constellations inside the elevators map the night sky as it appeared on important dates in American history, from July 4, 1776 to January 20, 2009. The chandeliers on the spiral staircase are original to the 1917 opening. Both evenings, walking out to find the entrance lit up at night, the floral installation glowing on the dark facade, and a cherry red Ferrari parked out front, we stopped and we just entered it. Some hotels are just a place to stay. This one is a scene.

💡 Arrival advice

Check-in is at 4 p.m., but arriving earlier is worth it. Valet parking is fast, the front desk holds your luggage with no problem and will alert you when your room is ready. You can go exploring a few minutes after your arrival.

Cherry blossom season: why it’s the right base Cherry blossom season at Tidal Basin, Washington DC | Photo: Better Living We timed this trip for peak bloom, and it was peak bloom. The tidal pool was definitely crowded, busier than expected, but we were not best prepared for the energy of this crowd.

Everyone there, and there were thousands of people from what seemed like the four corners of the world, was just happy to be exactly where they were. On a perfect spring day, in full bloom, sharing something beautiful with strangers who all came for the same reason. It was one of those rare public experiences where the crowd is part of what makes it special rather than something to navigate.

Cherry blossoms bring special joy to people who come to see them, and being in the middle of it is worth experiencing at least once.

Why location makes all the difference Washington DC Hotel Entrance with Spring Floral Arch | Photo: Better Living The traffic in and out of DC during flower season isn’t easy to navigate, which is exactly why where you stay is so important.

Having a hotel where you can just arrive, put the car back in and start walking changes the whole experience. The Washington Monument is a five-minute walk from the front door. The Tidal Basin is about a twenty-minute walk, with the boardwalk winding through additional flowers and passing several of the city’s most important memorials. There’s no rental car to worry about, no parking problems to worry about, no public transportation to worry about. You’re right there in the middle, that’s the whole point.

The Washington Hotel leans fully into the season and it works. The Cherry Blossoms packageavailable through mid-April, includes a welcome basket containing Sakura tea, Japanese Kit Kats, Sakura Mochi candies and a commemorative magnet, as well as a $25 daily dining credit and a $10 donation per reservation to the Adopt a Cherry Tree Project. This is a rare hotel package where every element takes on real meaning in the moment.

Among the luxury options within walking distance of the Tidal Basin, nothing matches this combination of location, design, and dining.

🌸 Cherry Blossom Tips

Wear comfortable shoes. Allow two or more hours of walking to complete the full Tidal Basin Loop and view the memorials. Sneakers are the way to go, period. Check out our tips for preparing your trip to the city if you are still packing your bag.

Bring water and a real camera. The light through the Tidal Basin flowers is worth the extra effort beyond your phone.

Take an Uber to the Jefferson Memorial and walk back. Start with the most iconic view and let the full loop take you home. The Washington Hotel awaits at the other end.

Go early. Peak flowering only lasts four to seven days. Watch the National Park Service forecast at nps.gov and get to the Tidal Basin before 9 a.m. if you want to breathe. Being able to walk to the hotel makes early departure really easy.

Book early to know prices, not just flowering time. Spring rates at the Washington Hotel reflect the season. The earlier you book, the better your options are in terms of room category and price.

King Suite with Spa and Monument View King Spa Suite Room with Monument View at Washington DC Hotel | Photo: Better Living Our room was ready by mid-afternoon and we entered the King Suite with Spa and Monument View for the first time it was delivered immediately. The suite has a separate living room, full bedroom and large marble bathroom, and is designed with real conviction. The coffee and lounge area features a floor-to-ceiling mural by artist Amit Greenberg, layered and detailed and the kind of work you keep finding new things in. This suite is fun, comfortable and stylish.

The King Spa Suite Living Room with Monument View at the Washington DC Hotel | Photo: Better Living The living room television takes up the entire wall. It’s huge. The bedroom has a second screen and the red lacquered bar contains the Nespresso machine and glassware seating four people.

King Spa Suite with Monument View and Washington Monument View, Washington DC Hotel | Photo: Better Living But the moment that stayed with us was simpler than all that. Waking up first thing in the morning and looking up to find the Washington Monument perfectly framed in the bedroom window. This view, with a Lavazza espresso in hand and nowhere to go for another hour, is the kind of thing a hotel room almost never offers. This one did it.

The bathroom The marble bathroom of the Monument View King Spa Suite at the Washington DC Hotel. | Photo: Better Living The bathroom was a real delight. An all-marble surround, a deep freestanding bathtub that earned its place after a full day of walking around town, a rain shower that looked as good as it looked, and spa-like robes waiting on the hook. After two days of covering serious terrain on foot, coming back to that bathroom was pure luxury. We slept exceptionally well both nights, which in a city center hotel is something of an achievement in itself.

Where to eat and drink at the Washington Hotel Rooftop Yellowfin Tuna Crudo VIEW from Washington DC Hotel | Photo: Better Living The Washington Hotel has two culinary experiences It’s worth knowing that well. The cuisine at both restaurants is led by Executive Chef Jerome Grant, whose approach is rooted in his DMV education and refined through famous cuisines. His commitment to Mid-Atlantic ingredients and truly intentional cooking shines through in every dish. A 20% gratuity is included at all restaurants, which is worth knowing when you sit down.

Fireclay Restaurant and Lobby Bar Duck Confit Bao Buns at Fireclay Lobby Bar, Hotel Washington DC. | Photo: Better Living Fireclay is the hotel’s all-day restaurant and lobby bar, and it served us well for two meals. One thing to note: after 2 p.m. the table in the main dining room may be closed and you will instead be directed to the bar or high tables near the bar. We didn’t know this going in and it was slightly unexpected, but it wasn’t a problem once we got settled. The bar area is relaxed and comfortable, and for a late afternoon meal after a long day of walking, it proved to be just the right energy.

The food at Fireclay is best understood as a true hotel restaurant that turns out to be very good rather than a destination dining experience in its own right. There are exceptional restaurants all around this hotel, but if you want the full Hotel Washington experience, a signature cocktail and a few dishes at Fireclay are worth it. The Fireclay $15 per night Destination Fee Credit makes this easy.

Spicy Shrimp Bucatini at Fireclay Restaurant, Washington DC Hotel. Just a warning: the heat is real. | Photo: Better Living The Spicy Shrimp Bucatini was rich and satisfying, but just a warning: the heat is real. More punch than expected, which we loved and would order again without hesitation. The Duck Confit Bao Buns were tender with bright red pepper and cilantro cutting through the richness cleanly. The hot, crispy chicken sandwich arrived sliced, which made sharing easy, and disappeared just as quickly, crispy and flavorful with a real kick and a sesame bun that held up to it all. We shared everything about this meal and it was exactly the right amount of food. We finished with the Cherry Blossom Shortcake, a light, creamy, heat-cooling seasonal special.

Breakfast at Fireclay Mixed Berry Yogurt Bowl at Fireclay Restaurant, Washington DC Hotel. The breakfast that sets the tone for the whole day. | Photo: Better Living Breakfast on the morning of departure was an entirely different and better experience. We sat in the dining room and our server Omar set the tone for the entire meal. The coffee was never less than hot, the refills arrived before we thought to ask for them, and his suggestions when we were undecided turned out to be exactly right. The mixed berry yogurt bowl with Greek yogurt, seasonal berries, homemade granola, bee pollen and honey struck a rare balance between indulgent and truly nourishing. The fireclay omelette with charred tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach and cheddar, along with chef’s potatoes and crispy bacon, was a hearty and fitting farewell. The Bread Board gave us some treats to take home. Breakfast here, with the right server and nowhere to rush, is one of those meals that makes a hotel stay complete.

What we ordered from Fireclay

Late lunch

Spicy Shrimp Bucatini · Duck Confit Bao Buns · Hot Crispy Chicken Sandwich · Cherry Blossom Shortcake

Roof VIEW Crispy Branzino at VIEW Rooftop, Washington DC Hotel | Photo: Better Living Roof VIEW is consistently ranked among the best rooftops in Washington, DC, and after one dinner here, we completely understand why.

We arrived around 6pm to take our time with drinks and appetizers before the sun set, and that timing turned out to be exactly right. The roof hummed with electrical energy, the kind of room where you felt like you were somewhere. Reservations are essential here, especially during cherry blossom season, and don’t wait until the last minute.

VUE Rooftop is the rare restaurant where the ambiance and food are worth the trip, and the presentations are as breathtaking as the views.

The view is one of those things that’s really hard to praise, because photographs don’t fully prepare you for it. The Washington Monument straight ahead, the White House visible to the right, then the sky starts to change color behind everything and the entire city looks like it was designed just for you.

Washington DC at sunset with the Washington Monument | Photo: Better Living Each dish had a flavor profile that pleasantly surprised us, more layered and more thoughtful than what we expected. s we were waiting. Good portions, beautiful presentations and nothing that was missing. The Yellowfin Tuna Crudo was elegant, fresh and deliciously colorful. The Coastal Fritto, cornmeal crusted shrimp and calamari with Calabrian chile mayonnaise was perfectly fried and completely addictive. The Crispy Branzino arrived with the skin still crackling in a light citrus and fennel broth.

Ribs smoked for 48 hours on the roof VIEW from the Washington DC hotel | Photo: Better Living The 48 Hour Smoked Short Rib was the dish of the evening: deeply glazed, fork-tender, with white sweet potato and broccolini and a finish of pickled mustard seeds and chives that brought the whole plate together. The VXB chocolate bar with pistachio nougat, date caramel and pistachio ice cream was a real hit. Don’t skip dessert at VUE.

Power to the Peaches Cocktail at VUE Rooftop, Washington DC Hotel | Photo: Better Living VUE has an impressive cocktail selection and we both ended up ordering the Power to the Peaches with Gray Goose Essences Vodka, Cointreau, Chandon Garden Spritz, chamomile, honey and lemon. The menu calls it a VIEW must-try, and that’s right. It’s refreshing, light, colorful and goes with everything. Don’t miss it.

We were warmly welcomed before we even sat down and the reception had set the tone with a table with a clear view and a welcome that made us feel expected rather than just hosted. Several members of staff looked after us throughout the evening, which meant someone was always nearby without ever getting high. Each dish presented to the table had a recommendation, and each recommendation was retained.

📋 VIEW Reservation Note

Book through OpenTable before you arrive, ideally at the same time as you reserve the room. During cherry blossom season, this roof fills up completely. Ask for a table near the window or terrace and plan to arrive around 6 p.m. to enjoy the aperitif and the sunset in the same session.

Second day: monuments, flowers and French brasserie around the corner Cherry blossoms framing the Washington Monument at the Tidal Basin, Washington DC | Photo: Better Living Our second day followed a more relaxed pace, which is exactly what a good location allows. We headed to the Capitol in the morning, visible directly down Pennsylvania Avenue from the corner of the hotel, one of America’s great city walks in the spring.

From there we walked through the mall, took an Uber to the Jefferson Memorial, and walked the full Tidal Basin loop. Starting at Jefferson and working your way back is the route we recommend to everyone. You start with the most spectacular view, walk among the flowers the whole way and the hotel awaits you at the other end.

Lunch at La Grande Boucherie Interior of La Grande Boucherie DC, a three-minute walk from the Washington Hotel | Photo: Better Living For lunch, we popped into La Grande Boucherie, a French brasserie located just a stone’s throw from the hotel at 14th and G Street NW.

Space stopped us at the door. Art Nouveau style, mahogany and glass, a high gilded ceiling and a massive curved bar with a metal top imported from France. It feels like a room from another era, which is just the right energy when you spend two days in a city steeped in history since 1776.

We loved that such a beautiful restaurant was just a three minute walk from the hotel and transported us straight to Paris.

The Croque Monsieur at La Grande Boucherie DC. A stone’s throw from the Washington Hotel and transported to Paris. | Photo: Better Living We had the Onion Soup, the Gruyere Brioche Croque Monsieur and a Steak Sandwich with hand cut steak, caramelized onions, horseradish aioli and French fries. A completely satisfactory midday stopover before setting off again.

🥐 Catering nearby

La Grande Boucherie DC is located at 699 14th Street NW, a three-minute walk from the Washington Hotel. No reservations necessary for lunch on weekdays. One of the most beautiful dining rooms in the city and a natural stopover between flowery walks.

The Washington Hotel spa The Washington DC Hotel Lobby Spa | Photo: Better Living At the Washington Hotel, the spa is a chic and comfortable place for facial, body and beauty treatments when you need to be pampered before or after a day of sightseeing.

I booked the Joy of Beauty Signature Facial the first morning before heading out to explore the cherry blossom hotspots, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip.

Check-in was friendly and effortless. Comfy spa flip-flops, a locker and a fluffy bathrobe waiting to change. The ladies’ lounge is modern and truly stylish, the kind of space where you feel your shoulders drop as soon as you sit down.

Arriving early to spend some time there before the appointment, with fruit water and tea and no agenda, was a quiet pleasure.

The Women’s Relaxation Lounge at the Washington DC Hotel Spa | Photo: Better Living My esthetician Zoraya gave me the best facial I’ve had in a decade. After a long winter, tired, dull skin and in real need of hydration, I was ready for something that actually worked. Facials here are bespoke, tailored entirely to your individual skin rather than following a set protocol.

Zoraya analyzed quickly, recommended a microdermabrasion treatment followed by a hydrating mask, and it was exactly the right decision. Using Comfort Zone products, made in Italy and formulated for visible results, she left my skin more hydrated than it had in months. Zero irritation, zero downtime and the facial included a hand, neck and arm massage which made the experience truly restorative.

Then mint water and a chocolate covered strawberry came into the living room. This simple touch ended the visit perfectly. I left feeling like I won a million dollars and would book here again in a heartbeat.

✨ Spa tips

Ask Zoraya for your facial care. She’s a real skin whisperer and the best I’ve come across in years.

Arrive early and fill out the emailed intake form in advance so you can focus entirely on relaxing. Time spent in the salon before your treatment is worth incorporating.

Learn about the Trager Method. The Washington Hotel is the only property in DC to have a certified practitioner for this full-body tension release treatment. It’s worth booking if you have time.

Is Hotel Washington worth it for cherry blossom season? Washington Monument surrounded by cherry blossoms in spring, Washington DC | Photo: Better Living Yes. DC during peak flowering rewards doing things right. Flowers wait for no one, traffic is a drag, and the difference between staying in the right place and the wrong place is the difference between a stressful day of sightseeing and a trip you actually enjoy. The Washington Hotel completely eliminates friction. You arrive, you leave the car and you start walking. That alone elevates the whole experience.

What stood out the most The suite was really comfortable and full of artistic intentions. The rooftop is among the best in town, period, and the restaurants at VUE and Fireclay are worth your time rather than your convenience. The spa offered one of the most memorable facials we have ever had. And the details, Omar keeping the coffee hot at breakfast, Zoraya knowing exactly what our skin needed, the valet preparing the car before we finished checking out, are where this hotel deserves its Forbes rating. None of this happened by accident.

There are fees to be aware of, all detailed in the box above. None of this seemed unreasonable at this level, and the destination fee in particular returns real value. Go there with clear eyes and the payment will seem like the good end of a very good trip.

If you want to visit DC to see the cherry blossoms, this is definitely the place to do it. You’re in the heart of it all, the hotel celebrates the season in a meaningful way, and having a beautiful room and an exceptional rooftop waiting for you at the end of a long day of walking makes the trip even more special. This is the ideal hotel for couples who want to be in the middle of the experience rather than on the side. If you have thought about a weekend in the city to reset well-beingcherry blossom season in Washington with a stay like this is exactly that. We are already talking about coming back. Probably for the same sequel. Certainly for VIEW. And almost certainly for one more Power to the Peaches at sunset.

The essentials The Washington Hotel is the perfect place to experience cherry blossom season in Washington DC. Forbes Verified Luxury, 5-star service, a history dating back to 1917, and a location that puts the entire city within walking distance.
