If you collect Avios in the UNITED KINGDOMthere is a good chance that you will mainly redeem them through British Airways. But there’s a lesser-known way to use your points, which comes with its own benefits: booking Iberia award flights.
For many experienced point collectors, Iberia is not just an alternative. This is part of their core strategy.
This guide explains everything you need to know about Iberia award seats with Avios, how to find them, book them and how they can drive value for UK travelers.
What are Iberia award seats? Award seats are flights that you book using Avios rather than cash. Rather than paying the full price of the ticket, you redeem points for most of the cost and pay taxes and fees in cash. With airlines such as British Airways, this can mean amounts as low as £1 for a return ticket. For Iberia award flights, the price is closer to £25, but it’s still excellent value when you consider that you’re paying for the majority of the flight with the points you’ve earned through your everyday spending.
However, not all seats on a plane can be reserved this way. Airlines release a limited number of seats per flight specifically for Avios bookings. These are known as “reward seats” or “award availability”. Although Iberia does not guarantee a precise number, industry analysis shows a typical trend of 4 economy classes and 2 business classes for short-haul flights, and 4 economy classes, 2 economy classes and 2 business classes for long-haul flights.
With Iberia, these seats are typically released up to about a year in advance, meaning early planning can give you a major advantage.
The key thing to understand is that you’re not just redeeming Avios for cash, you’re gaining access to a separate group of seats. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.
How Iberia prices award flights Iberia uses a distance-based pricing model combined with peak and off-peak schedules. This means that the further you travel, the more Avios you’ll need, and flights during busy periods (like school holidays or Christmas) cost more. Off-peak dates, however, can offer exceptional value.
This system is very different from the dynamic pricing models used by some airlines, where prices constantly fluctuate – although I would certainly expect Iberia to move towards a hybrid model in the future. Fortunately, with Iberia, once you understand the chart, you can predict prices and strategically plan for booking award seats.
For an Iberia award flight booking between London and Madrid, you can expect to pay up to 8,500 Avios in economy class and up to 17,000 Avios in business class. For longer flights from the UK, you can fly to New York via Madrid and expect to pay up to 30,000 Avios in economy class and up to 50,000 in business class.
How to book Iberia award flights with Avios There are two main ways to book Iberia award seats as a UK traveler.
1. Booking via Iberia Plus You can book directly through Iberia’s loyalty program, Iberia Plus.
The process is simple:
Create a free Iberia Plus account Log in and select your flights Select the option to pay with Avios Pay Avios plus taxes and fees You need an Iberia account to search for award availability on their website, and award seat alerts are not available, so I suggest using an award flight search tool to find your preferred seats, then booking through Iberia. You can also use them to set alerts if the award seat you want is not available at the time of your search.
2. Booking via British Airways Since both airlines use Avios, you can also book Iberia flights through British Airways Club:
Log in to your BA account Search for routes operated by Iberia Pay with your Avios However, this isn’t really a particularly attractive option – and this leads to one of the most important strategies which I’ll detail below.
Everything you need to plan your trip in 2026 The key strategy: moving Avios between programs Avios is not tied to a single airline. This gives it more value, in my opinion, than any other airline loyalty currency. You can move your Avios points between British Airways Club and Iberia Plus at a rate of 1:1. This means you can earn Avios in the UK (e.g. via BA or credit cards), transfer them to Iberia Plus as needed and access more routes, more award seat options and better flexibility.
Why Iberia award seats are so valuable Using Avios on Iberia unlocks a number of travel benefits, including
1. Reduce taxes and fees on certain routes One of the biggest frustrations Avios collectors encounter with redeeming through British Airways is the higher cash component on certain routes or cabin classes. On some comparable long-haul routes, Iberia charges lower taxes and surcharges. This, however, comes at a price.
As an example, a round-trip redemption on Avios British Airways Business Class to New York costs £399 in taxes and fees. The same journey via Iberia (via Madrid) costs between £150 and £250 in taxes. For UK travelers, even if a change in Madrid is necessary, the savings may justify choosing Iberia over British Airways in this scenario.
2. Access to Avios availability only Iberia award seats are reserved exclusively for Avios bookings. And during peak periods, even if cash fares are very high (think summer vacation), by booking award seats with points you can get around this seasonal price inflation and pay a fixed cost for your award seat. Allowing you to benefit from excellent cash savings if you travel during school holidays etc.
3. Upgrade Opportunities In addition to reserving a seat, Iberia also allows you to use Avios to upgrade your flights. For example, you can book a cash ticket in Economy and then use Iberia Avios to upgrade to Premium Economy or Business. This can sometimes offer better value for money than booking a full award ticket – but I always recommend doing your calculations before booking this way to ensure you get the best value for money. To do this, simply look at the cash cost of your upgraded ticket and compare it to the overall cost you’ll pay for your cash booking plus the Avios upgrade on top. Hint here: I always like 1 Avios for 1p to get the most out of my points.
Sometimes you’re looking for an upgrade, but it’s not available at the time you search. In this case, use an award search tool and set an alert to be notified if a seat appears – that way you won’t miss a thing. I’ve successfully leveled with this tactic several times.
4. Oneworld partner access Iberia is part of the Oneworld alliance. This means your Avios can also be used on partner airlines such as British Airways, American Airlines, Qatar Airways and Finnair.
This expands your options well beyond Iberia’s own network. You can move points between programs and access routes that Iberia does not offer. This also means you can access other airline lounges at the airport with your Oneworld status and flight ticket – giving you more options to enhance your travel experience before you even get on the plane.
The British Traveler Advantage For UK-based travelers, Iberia offers a particularly powerful Avios reward seat strategy.
Positioning via Madrid Instead of taking a long-haul flight from London, many travelers using Iberia award seats book a cheap flight from London to Madrid and start their long-haul trip from there using points. This is called “positioning flight.” By using this tactic, you can reduce your cash taxes and fees and access lower Avios fares. Even adding the extra flight, the total cost is often significantly lower.
Combining Avios earnings and spending The main factor in any reward travel planning is to get points in the first place. It’s easy to earn Avios in the UK through Avios credit cards, such as Barclaycard and American Express, retail partners found on the BA Shopping Portal or Avios Shop, and conversions from other loyalty programs such as Nectar Points.
By combining UK earnings with an Iberia award flight, not only will you quickly increase your points pool, but you will effectively maximize the value of your points.
Disadvantages to be aware of Although Iberia award seats offer excellent value for money, there are some compromises that need to be considered.
Limited availability Award seats are limited and can disappear quickly, especially on popular routes. There are more than 60 million people around the world who collect Avios to book award seats. Of these, 6.5 million are already members of the Iberia Club and 13 million are members of the British Airways Club. That’s a lot of people looking for seats at any given time. It is often essential to book early. I always recommend that Avios collectors use an award flight finder to set up flight alerts and contact the airline as soon as they are informed that their award seats are available to book with Avios. This has always worked for me.
Peak pricing During peak periods, particularly around school holidays, Avios costs increase. If you can travel off-peak, you’ll notice a big difference in Avios costs. That being said, if you need to travel during peak times, be sure to check the cash fare equivalent on the airline’s website. Cash fares notoriously increase during peak seasons, so you may find that you still get some nice savings by using Avios to book seats.
Restrictions on modifications Some Iberia bookings – particularly partner exchanges – may be less flexible. Changes or cancellations may incur fees and, in some cases, may not be permitted. Always check the terms and conditions of your reservation before departure.
Economy Fare Limits Likewise, Iberia’s recent changes mean that some Economy award tickets may not include checked baggage. res nor free seat selection. As above, always check what is included before booking.
A simple strategy for Iberia Avios To sum it all up, here’s a typical approach used by savvy British travelers:
Earn Avios through British Airways or UK partners Transfer Avios to Iberia Plus Book Iberia long-haul flights (especially in business class) Add a separate flight to Madrid if necessary Final Thoughts Iberia award seats are one of the most underutilized – and powerful – tools available to Avios collectors in the UK. Although they require a little more planning, the benefits can be substantial. If you’re serious about getting the most out of your Avios, Iberia is not only worth considering: it should be part of your core strategy.
