The current Mayo team earned their place on merit after an outstanding championship campaign. Yet history is a stark reminder of how difficult the final stage was for generations of Mayo footballers. Mayo supporters have lived through more than seven decades of hope, disappointment and near misses. Every generation believed they could end the wait. From the repeated defeat to Meath in 1996, through narrow defeats to Kerry, Donegal, Dublin and Tyrone, Mayo repeatedly came close to Sam Maguire without managing to take the final step. Their current team now has the opportunity to write a different ending. While the statistics and history make for fascinating reading, they do not decide the All-Ireland final. Every championship decider starts with a scoreboard reading 0-0, and records are there to be broken. But for Mayo, the challenge is undeniable. They are attempting to win the county’s first All-Ireland title since 1951, end an unprecedented run of 11 successive final defeats and win only the second All-Ireland senior title for a Connacht county in football or hurling since 2004. If they succeed, it will be one of the most important days in Mayo GAA history.
