We all love the confidence and edge that a full face of makeup gives us. But no one likes adding tons of steps, time, and products to their evening skincare routine. Even the no makeup makeup (ahem, Margot Robbie in Wuthering Heights) should be removed to avoid blemishes, clogged pores and help your skincare absorb optimally.

Putting makeup on your face while you sleep is like skincare suicide. Whatever your goals, you won’t achieve them if you get “beauty rest” while wearing slathered foundation and crusty eyeshadow.

That said, if you exaggerate During the removal process, your skin may become dry, stripped and raw. This can go against the effort you put into your routine and seriously compromise the health of your skin.

We know, it can feel like a lose-lose battle. Fortunately, there is a solution. You just need to understand how to remove makeup correctly, keeping your skin clear, calm and comfortable. So let’s talk about it.

Here’s how to remove your makeup before going to bed:

How to remove makeup without stripping your skin

If you are someone who thinks: “Sleeping with makeup is not that bad, isn’t it? We listen and we don’t judge, but… you should definitely consider stopping now.

The first and most important step: understand why proper makeup removal is important for healthy skin. Once you know the “why” of things, your nightly withdrawal routine can feel like a self-care ritual, not a chore.

So first of all, we’re going to explain why it’s so important to remove your makeup before putting your head on your body. silk pillowcase and apply your TSC mouth strip every evening. (Because East what we all do, right?)

Next, we’ll list the best products, tips and tricks to get the job done right. You will notice a great improvement in your skin.

Why is it important to remove makeup before bed?

Minimizes breakouts

Throughout the day, makeup mixes with natural oils, sweat, pollution and bacteria. Wearing makeup while you sleep means pushing all that buildup deeper into your skin, clogging pores and causing breakouts.

Removing makeup in the evening removes pore-clogging debris before it has a chance to take hold. This gives your skin a clean slate and reduces the risk of congestion turning into active breakouts.

If you’re dealing with significant buildup after spending a lot of time sleeping with makeup on, here’s how to deep clean your pores for a skincare reset.

Supports skin repair

At night, your skin goes into repair mode. Cellular renewal accelerates, inflammation subsides and the active ingredients in your products go to work.

But if the makeup is always When placed on your skin, it can block the absorption of skin care ingredients and prevent dead skin cells from being shed properly. This means you miss out on the usual skin benefits at night. (And, honestly, you’re encouraging premature aging.)

A clean surface allows for cell renewal and repair as intended, helping your skin take full advantage of its natural nighttime recovery cycle.

Protects the skin barrier

Makeup can dry out your skin and cause irritation, even if it doesn’t cause breakouts. Over time, this can weaken the skin barrier. The result? Redness, sensitivity and chronic dryness.

Gentle makeup removal helps preserve the integrity of your skin barrier by reducing irritation and moisture loss. When the barrier remains intact, skin is better able to retain moisture and defend itself against environmental stressors.

Relieves inflammation

Leaving makeup on your skin can contribute to persistent inflammation. And inflammation means a red, reactive, acne-prone, swollen face. Basically, that’s what we’re all trying to avoid, right?

Less exposure to irritants during the night gives your immune system a break, helpful in calming redness and sensitivity visible in the morning.

Maintains healthy eyelashes and eyebrows

Mascara, eyebrow gels, eyeliners, foundation and more can migrate from the skin’s surface into the hair follicles overnight. When these follicles become clogged with products, oil, and debris, they cannot get enough oxygen and nutrients to grow properly.

Of course, this can lead to thinner, more brittle eyelashes and eyebrows over time. Keeping the follicular area clear supports normal growth cycles and reduces stress that can lead to premature shedding.

But if you need to carry out repair work, we have you covered. The Skinny Confidential Brow Peptide. You can even use it on your eyelashes.

Prevents eye irritation

Eye makeup is one of the worst types of cosmetics to leave on overnight. The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate, making it particularly susceptible to damage.

Eye shadow, mascara and liner can migrate into the eyes, trigger inflammation along the lash line, disrupt tear production and accelerate bacterial growth.

Removing eye makeup before going to bed helps protect this fragile area. As a result, you wake up with clear, comfortable and calm eyes.

What removes makeup?

Oil-based cleaners

Cleansing oils are excellent makeup removers. For what? Because oils dissolve oil and most makeup products are oil or wax based. This allows the cleanser to easily bind to the makeup and break it down.

Recommendations: Cleansing oils Biossance, Native AgentAnd House of Preservation.

Cleansing balms

Cleansing balms work the same way. The oil-based balm warms your skin and dissolves makeup, sunscreen and other build-up. And because balms are thicker than typical cleansers, they work especially well for breaking down long-wear makeup.

Recommendations: Cleansing balms Elemis, Kora And Unfiltered Lux.

Micellar Water

Micellar water is full of cleaning molecules called “micelles”. One end of the micelle attracts oil, while the other attracts water, allowing it to remove just about any product from your skin with minimal scrubbing.

Natural oils

Natural oils like jojoba Or rosehip acts as a cleanser, dissolving oil-based cosmetics from the surface of your skin. That said, natural oils don’t add surfactants or other potentially irritating chemicals. They offer a very gentle way to remove makeup, ideal for sensitive or dry skin.

This is another reason why Lauryn always orders olive oil in her hotel room when she travels.

How to remove makeup correctly (for all skin types)

First step: gently massage the natural oil into the skin.

Natural oils are our favorites all-natural makeup removers. They’re gentle, effective and obviously natural – honestly, it’s a win in every way.

To use them, place a few drops on your fingertips, then massage them into your skin. You shouldn’t need a cotton pad or towel that adds friction. The oils will work immediately, dissolving whatever is on your face.

Step Two: Wet your hands and massage again.

Once the oil is on your skin, wet your hands a little. Continue to wash your face, massaging with light circular movements. You will notice that the oil turns a milky color and will begin to remove makeup from your skin.

What you’re actually doing is emulsifying the oil. This helps it break everything down and rinse away without rubbing, pulling, or leaving large residue.

Step Three: Rinse the oil off your face.

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water until the oil and loose makeup are completely gone. This cleanses everything and leaves your skin ready for the next step in your routine. You might choose to use a TSC Face Towel here. This will help gently remove residue.

Step Four: Remove residue with a water-based cleaner.

Yes, we are going with another mover. This is called double cleaningand it’s currently one of our favorite skincare trends. It is the best way to completely cleanse your skin of product and makeup residue as well as dirt, sweat and other grime.

For your second cleanse, apply a water-based cleanser with your fingers, using the same massaging motion. However, stay completely gentle. Friction is not our friend here.

Once the cleanser is applied to your skin, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

For water-based cleaners, we like OSEA Ocean Cleaner. And if you’re not familiar with this sleek brand, here’s Lauryn and Micahel interview OSEA founders on The Him and his show.

Step Five: Dry your face again with a disposable towel.

Now dry your face with a facial towel. Not the gross, crusty towel or washcloth lying around your bathroom. We are talking about a single-use towel because it is more hygienic, softer and more effective.

Just be sure to use a high-quality bamboo face towel like The Skinny Confidential face towel. They’re soft, ultra-absorbent, and durable enough to hold all that water without tearing.

They are non-toxic, preserve your skin barrier and actually help cleanse your skin.

Let’s put an end to the rags and washcloths. We’ve all known it’s gross for a while, and single-use facial towels are the perfect solution.

Step Six: Continue your evening skincare routine.

Once your face is clean, continue with the rest of your evening skincare routine as usual. With a clean base, you get better product absorption and skin recovery overnight.

Maintain healthy skin by removing makeup with a gentle double cleanse.

Removing makeup doesn’t have to be aggressive, complicated or time-consuming. With the right products and a gentle approach, it can really support your skin.

Consider removing makeup as the foundation of your nighttime routine. When your skin starts to feel clean and soothed, everything that follows works better. And you wake up looking like you In fact I had this beauty rest.

x, The Skinny Confidential team

+ Wake up looking and feeling completely energized.

++ Stalk Lauryn products in restock.
