California man faces federal charges for allegedly texting Nancy GuthrieBitcoin ransom payment lawyer’s family got bond from a judge — and could be out of federal custody in no time.
Derrick Callellaa 42-year-old Hawthorne man, made his initial appearance Friday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana.

American magistrate judge Karen E. Scott ordered that Callella be released on $20,000 bail…and he was ordered not to contact alleged victims or witnesses.
Federal prosecutors say Callella texted Nancy’s daughter Annie and his son-in-law Thomas Cioni“Did you get the bitcoins [sic] waiting on our side for the transaction.
The alleged texts were sent Wednesday… after the host of “TODAY” Savannah Guthrie posted a video acknowledging ransom letters sent to TMZ and two local media outlets in Tucson, Arizona.
To be clear…in the criminal complaint against Callella, federal authorities claim that the text messages he allegedly sent to Nancy’s family were NOT related to the ransom demand.
It’s not yet known if he’s out of jail… but Callella is due back in court next Thursday for his arraignment.
