A new 9-episode police thriller on Netflixwhich is based on an acclaimed book series, presents itself as the perfect combination of Bosch And True Detectivethe best elements. On its own, the show in question etches its own identity with its Nordic setting and gripping mystery drama. However, it’s hard not to notice how its main police character is reminiscent of Harry Bosch and True DetectiveRust Cohle.
Prime Video is undoubtedly streaming some of the best crime thrillers. However, among its vast offering of crime thrillers, Bosch arguably remains the defining series that significantly elevated Prime Video’s reputation in the genre. During this time, HBO also produced a number of prestige crime thrillers, but almost none of its additions to the genre felt as perfect and influential as True Detective season 1.
While Netflix is still playing catch-up in the crime thriller genre and has yet to establish a solid reputation, the streaming service’s new show, The detective’s hole by Jo Nesbøhas the potential to rival some of the best crime thrillers. Maybe it’s not up to the standards of the greats like True Detective season 1 and Bosch but we find some traces of the genius of the two series in The detective’s hole by Jo Nesbø Also.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole feels like the perfect combination of the best bits of Bosch and True Detective
The holder character in Netflix Detective hole not only shares his first name with Harry Bosch, but he’s also as broken and obsessed with his work as Titus Welliver’s character. Like Harry Bosch, Harry Hole also functions well within the legal system. However, he does not hesitate to bend certain rules and even cross moral and ethical boundaries to solve crimes.
His obsession with solving crime at all costs often puts him at odds with his colleagues and superiors. Similar to Bosch, Detective holeThe setting also becomes a character in itself. Just like Bosch immerses spectators in its sunny Los Angeles settings, Detective hole shows how its cold Oslo setting becomes a reflection of its titular detective’s detached worldview.
Detective holeIt is True Detective parallels emerge when he reveals the true nature of his central crime. The series of murders that animate his story reveal themselves to be rituals, each supported by religious symbolism. Like Rust Cohle, Detective Hole is also portrayed as a drug addict who struggles with his relationship with alcohol and even has difficulty maintaining relationships.
Similar to True DetectiveIn Cohle’s case, Hole’s investigations always have a supernatural underpinning. THE Crime thriller series on Netflix never makes its supernatural aspects too explicit, but Hole, like Cohle, almost seems to have a metaphysical connection to the crime he’s investigating.
Much like Cohle, Detective Hole even goes on a psychedelic journey in one sequence in the series so he can get closer to solving the central murder mysteries. With The detective’s hole by Jo Nesbø on Netflix having both the psychological intensity of True Detective season 1 and the slow-burn procedural style of Boschthis seems like the perfect series for fans of both franchises.
Like Bosch and True Detective, Jo Nesbø’s detective gap can last a long time
True Detective isn’t based on a book series, but its anthology format allows it to last forever. Although the HBO series has seemingly struggled to match the legacy of season 1 with subsequent seasons, it is still going strong and is set to return with a fifth season in the near future. Boschalso had a long run of seven seasons on Prime Video and was even followed by Bosch: the legacy.
While the main Bosch the series has finished its broadcast, the franchise continues with the spin-off, Ballardand the upcoming prequel, Start of the watch. As Bosch, The detective’s hole by Jo Nesbø is supported by a series of bestselling books which involves more than 10 payments. This gives the Netflix show enough source material to last at least five seasons.

Although it would be a little too early to qualify him as a worthy replacement Bosch And True Detective, The detective’s hole by Jo Nesbø on Netflix has the potential to become one of the best modern crime thrillers with future installments.
