The entire resident Evil the franchise can basically be summarized as a traumatic series of life-changing events for its world’s hapless inhabitants, with each entry finding new ways to up the ante with its collection of grotesque fates. Although Chris fares quite well against most of the monstrosities in the series, the same cannot be said for those closest to him, as almost all of Chris’ friends, partners, and teams have been killed in front of him.

Even though a protagonist who appears as often as Chris is forced to face more horrors, each entry strips away even more of what he holds dear through repeated and absolutely crushing losses, making it no surprise that he stays so far away from his beloved sister most of the time, while keeping new allies like Ethan on hand as he does whatever he deems necessary to end the threat of widespread bioterrorism.

7 Leon Kennedy wins more than his growing attitude problems

Although Leon is widely considered a key member of the RCPD, the fact that the Racoon City disaster was his first day without training makes his trials even more painful to remember. Even after barely surviving, Leon Kennedy faced countless epidemics and more than his fair share of biological weapons, with Resident Evil 4 offering some of the the most gruesome deaths in the series.

As if his past misadventures and constant manipulation weren’t enough to justify his cynical attitude and depressed mood, Leon is still faced with new horrors all these years later. Resident Evil Requiemwith the fate of not only his loved ones, but that of the entire world once again resting on his aging shoulders, despite all his personal loss and suffering.

6 It’s hard to find a Resident Evil villain as tragic as Jack Baker

Although he may seem like a monster who has completely lost his mind to the majority of people, Resident Evil 7Jack Baker is an absolutely tragic antagonist in more ways than one. Aside from being unwittingly responsible for infecting his entire family with a simple act of kindness by saving a human bioweapon, a detail revealed to Ethan makes his fate, and that of the entire Baker family, even more depressing.

Although it’s hard to tell over the maniacal laughter and brutal violence that is prevalent in the post-infection family, Jack and the rest of the Bakers still have a piece of their original consciousness inside of them, meaning he is fully aware of every horrible act he has committed in his mold-induced state, all while watching his family members go from relatively happy family to crazed serial killers one after the other.

5 Grace Ashcroft rarely gets a chance to breathe

What makes Grace such a tragic character is that she is one of the few resident Evil protagonists who lived completely normal lives before being thrust into the world of mutated monstrosities, which began when she witnessed her mother being murdered before her very eyes.

Although she was with the FBI, Grace was a simple technical analyst before becoming involved in the events of Requiem, and didn’t even have a government-issued firearm to use.

As if Grace’s teenage years weren’t traumatic enough, she was forced to return to the site of her mother’s death years later before being thrown into one of the the scariest resident Evil levels we saw it again. Thanks to repeated personal losses and countless horrific encounters with mutated undead, Grace is easily one of the show’s most relatable protagonists, making her central role in the series all the more painful to watch.

4 Jill Valentine is more than used to hostile work environments

In addition to being one of the very first people to experiment resident EvilFaced with Jill’s horrors, Jill spent months investigating Umbrella while under constant surveillance by the pharmaceuticals company, which specializes in biological weapons. Once the incident broke out, Jill was stalked relentlessly and faced a handful of near-death experiences that would send most horror protagonists into an era of permanent retirement.

Even after everything she’s been through, having survived countless disasters and assassination plots, Jill even underwent years of experimentation and mind control under Whesker’s command. Still fighting today despite her constant trials and tribulations, Jill is undoubtedly one of the franchise’s most laudable characters, who easily worth a future returnbut we hope in a more relaxing setting for her.

3 Ethan Winters is one of Resident Evil’s most heartbreaking heroes

Ethan Winters, another case of an ordinary civilian, was a simple man searching for his missing wife, before becoming embroiled in a nightmare he could never completely escape. Facing injuries greater than we can count, ones that would kill even the most hardened protagonists, the only thing that kept Ethan moving forward was saving his family at all costs.

From the hands of the Baker family, and ultimately the inhabitants of Resident Evil 8which pushes him well beyond any reasonable breaking point. With Ethan having more than his share of gruesome sights and terrifying monsters, the realization of how he survived so much brutality in the first place is one of the series’ most emotional twists.

2 Clancy from Resident Evil 7 is easily forgotten, but nightmarish to consider

Even putting aside the countless brutal experiments, Lisa Trevor survived even longer than her original creators to wander the halls of Spencer Mansion before her supposed death in solitary confinement, although with her virtually infinite regenerative abilities, fans have speculated that she might still be alive beneath the rubble of the mansion all these years later.
