If you’re a digital nomad or location-independent business owner, you’re either paying too much for fragmented insurance coverage (travel, medical, etc.) or you’re simply seriously underinsured. You have a health plan, travel insurance, and perhaps medical evacuation coverage. But when you work for yourself, you don’t have the type of safety net you get with a corporate job. And you can’t use a country’s social safety net because you’re not a citizen, right? You simply travel the world!
So what do you do?
The travel insurance company Security wing seeks to change that. They always wanted to create this all-in-one package for digital nomads, including insurance, benefits, and a social safety net.
I use their travel insurance all the time and they just launched what they call Nomadic citizen which aims to fill coverage gaps.
What is Nomad Citizen? Nomadic citizen is an annual subscription that bundles health cover, travel protection, income protection and life insurance benefits into one plan. It is aimed at location-independent entrepreneurs and business owners who spend more than half the year outside their home country and whose lives and incomes cross borders by default.
Nomad Citizen covers you worldwide with no residency restrictions (except Puerto Rico).
Who can register? Nomadic citizen covers people under age 56 and earning at least $4,000 per month. You register online, choose your start date, declare that you are in good health, and confirm that you will be out of your passport country for more than half the year. You can also add your partner and any child under 18.
But WHO do you have to register? It’s an interesting product. I definitely think there’s a niche for it. After all, let’s say you’re an entrepreneur in Bali and you don’t have access to any social safety net. What happens if you get sick or really injured and are out of work? A friend of mine in Mexico was hit by a car and seriously hospitalized and very quickly exhausted the limits of his travel insurance. Afterward, he couldn’t work for months while in rehab and started a GoFundMe for help. A product like Nomadic Citizen would have helped. Or helped any of the other digital nomads who get injured on the road and need to raise money.
I think this product is good for someone who lives in a country other than their own, without access to social services or a strong social safety net. For example, if you live in Sweden and have access to all state benefits, this product is probably not for you because they offer tons of services, but if you live in Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia, or France but don’t have access to benefits, or are just traveling the world, have a high income, work alone, or have a family, then this product would be something to consider.
How much does it cost? For those registering on or after July 1, 2026, the Nomadic citizen Membership costs $443 per month for ages 18-39. If you are between 40 and 49 years old, it is $665 per month and $875 per month for those aged 50-55. Children cost $143 per month (couples on the plan can add their first child under 10 for free). You can pay monthly or annually.
A note about US coverage: Nomad Citizen is truly global, including the US, although it should be noted that the coverage limits were not designed for heavy use there… because the US healthcare system is just a mess.
What is included? Income protection: Income Protection Allowance is probably the most compelling reason for Nomad Citizen’s existence. Traditional income protection or disability insurance requires a fixed employer, a permanent address and residence in a specific country. Freelancers and sole traders working across borders are largely uninsurable against loss of income through conventional schemes, such as government assistance.
If you’re self-employed or working remotely and lose your income (you’re laid off, your contracts dry up, or you can’t work due to a health issue), Nomad Citizen pays you up to $4,000 per month for up to 3 or 6 months while you get back on your feet. This advantage does not exist anywhere else!
Health insurance: Up to $1.5 million in annual coverage for inpatient, outpatient, prescription drug, dental, vision, mental health, maternity, preventative care, wellness therapies, and more. It’s like health insurance where you live and covers everything you need. It is much more robust than traditional travel insurance, which is only there in case of emergency.
Travel coverage: Travel delays, cancellations, theft of electronic devices, loss of baggage, evacuation, theft, family visits during hospitalization.
Parental leave: If you have a baby or become the legal guardian of a child, they pay US$4,000/month so you can take time off work without worrying about money. There is a waiting period of 3 years to access this service.
Long-term disability: If something really bad happens to you and you’re forced to stop working permanently because, for example, you lose your vision, you’re diagnosed with cancer, you have a serious stroke, or you can no longer do basic things like walk, dress yourself, or eat on your own, they pay you $4,000 a month until you’re 75.
Visa assistance: Members can browse and apply for government versions of long-term visas designed for nomads (i.e. they can work on these visas) directly through our app interface without having to apply through government websites. They handle all direct communications with the government and check the quality of your application before submitting it to maximize the chances of approval.
Nomadic care card: Find the best providers through their member-powered database of over 4,000 healthcare providers worldwide, with ratings for service and English level.
Payment cards: Use your SafetyWing card to pay for covered services up to $500. This automatically generates a claim that has already been paid so you don’t have to wait for reimbursement. The SafetyWing Card is a global prepaid debit card sent to every Nomad Citizen member, which they can use to pay for doctor appointments or prescriptions without using their own money.
Human support 24/7: You will have access to a 24/7 live chat so you can get a response from a real person within minutes.
Everything in one app: Claims, coverage details, customer service, provider search with Nomad Care Map, and visa assistance are all managed through one app. There is no need to switch between a health insurer, a travel insurer and a separate income protection provider (if one existed).
Make complaints For health cover, you either pay out of pocket and request reimbursement, or you contact the 24/7 team to arrange direct payment with the provider. For travel claims, you collect documents (police reports, carrier delay notices, receipts) and submit a claim. For income protection, you work with SafetyWing to verify the loss and provide proof that you are actively seeking new income. Everything is managed through one app and it makes things really simple and easy to do.
*** I love SafetyWing’s mission and use their travel insurance for all of my trips. This new Nomadic citizen The product is perfect for people who are full-time digital nomads and want some sort of income protection as well as more robust health and travel coverage and the kind of social security programs you’d get if you lived in one place. After all, when you’re a solopreneur, you worry about what happens if you get injured, can’t work, or have a child. It’s all up to you, right? Nomad Citizen is the program that ensures that you won’t have to worry about these kinds of things anymore.
