Sony PS-LX3BT: Two-minute review

The Sony PS-LX3BT is one of the first new turntables to leave Sony’s R&D department in years. This comes some time after the launch of the Sony PS-LX310BT, one of what TechRadar rightly considers to be the best turntables for beginners – and therefore has big shoes to fill.

And sort of fill them, at least in the most literal sense. It shares many physical attributes, aims for the same sleek aesthetic, and seeks to capture the same corner of the market with user-friendly interfaces and a pragmatic approach to disc playback. It’s a shame it doesn’t quite stick the landing.

Price is the main sticking point for me – its introductory price far exceeds that of similarly spec and better equipped turntables in the same market. It’s in this context that some bugbears have become serious missteps – from a stylus that Sony insists you have to replace with them, to a cheap case that feels like it comes from a device a third of the price.

These elements overshadow the PS-LX3BT’s audio performance, via its decent built-in preamp and press-and-play Bluetooth connectivity as the star of the show. It could be good – that East well, by some measures – but not for where he asks to sit.

The Sony PS-LX3BT is a fully automatic, Bluetooth-enabled plug-and-play turntable, with its eye squarely placed on the upper limits of entry level. At its launch price of $399 / £299 / AU$469, it’s not what I’d call cheap; in fact, it’s undercut by a few near-equivalent competitors, the most compelling of which is the Audio-Technica AT-LP70XBT.

Then there’s this turntable’s own brother (they were actually released together), the Sony PS-LX5BT which is more expensive but adds a more delicate 2.0g ± 0.5g stylus pressure, a thicker, higher quality rubber mat, a tweaked circuit design designed to suppress unwanted vibration, a dedicated gold-plated audio output port (something not present here) with a cable in the box, plus a slightly higher-end all-black finish range.

However, most other competitors on the market don’t have the name “Sony” tastefully etched onto the chassis. Sony is a proven domestic brand when it comes to audio-visual technology, whether it’s televisions, games consoles, CD players or integrated hi-fi systems.

Therefore, new or old vinyl enthusiasts likely trust the brand more to offer something intuitive, hassle-free, and of minimal quality. Is this trust founded? The 2019 Sony PS-LX310BT was a huge success, but it was also much cheaper (depending on where you lived), having launched at $199 / £200 / AU$399. So you see the problem…

The Sony PS-LX3BT is an automatic record player; this means it can be operated entirely by the series of buttons and switches adorning its charcoal-colored surface. Simply select the size and speed of your recording, then use the buttons on the front to control tonearm placement or removal. Platter rotation is triggered by moving the tonearm past a certain point, so even if you want to use the PS-LX3BT manually (thanks to the silver finger rest protruding from where the case would be), you literally only have to lift a finger to play a record.

Automatic turntable mechanisms aren’t that new, and this mechanical design doesn’t seem particularly new either, with some familiar thuds and whirs that I know from my old Rotel system. What is it, at least slightly However, Bluetooth connectivity is newer, which the PS-LX3BT prides itself on. Specifically, there’s aptX adaptive Bluetooth transmission, for high-resolution, low-latency streaming from the turntable to the Bluetooth receiver of your choice and accessible via a button suavely recessed into the front left corner of the chassis face.

In addition to that Bluetooth connectivity, the LX3BT has old-school connections, via a stereo RCA cable wired into the back. It’s an odd choice to use a permanently attached cable instead of a port – and besides, given the intended audience for this thing, I’m surprised there’s no 3.5mm Aux output either.

However, this RCA cable powers a built-in, switchable phono preamp, meaning you can plug your turntable into most amplifiers without the need for an additional gain stage. On top of that, there’s a gain switch that lets you boost or cut your turntable’s output by 4dB. Surprising in a different way; thought about it, even.

The LX3BT has, like many other entry-level turntables of its ilk, a fully integrated cartridge layout with a replaceable stylus element. The stylus portion here looks strikingly similar to that of Audio-Technica’s AT-3600 series, but is “designed specifically for this turntable,” according to the FAQ on Sony’s website. With a little research, the stylus appears to be Audio-Technica’s AT3600LAX, a conical stylus with a carbon fiber cantilever – although Sony’s specs list a slightly higher tracking force of 3.5g. (Incidentally, my own measurements of tonearm tracking force placed its effort at a, for me, troubling 3.7g.)

Importantly, this thin layer of ownership creates a difficult path to self-replacement, or even upgrade. Sony would prefer that you go through their resellers or customer service for a like-for-like stylus replacement, stating that “other styluses are not supported.” Built-in cartridges and replaceable styluses may be clever entry-level phenomena and can be performed seamlessly, but here in this way it tends a little too much towards the anti-consumer for my tastes. Fewer points of attention.

For all the grumbling I’ve voiced against the Sony PS-LX3BT thus far, I will argue that it sounds great. This certainly not an AT-3600L-in-a-moustache cartridge has perfectly reasonable sound quality – excellent, even, for its place in the market.

True to the marketing copy, the LX3BT appears warm, with the overall color of its cartridge being a bit soft with some noticeable falloff towards the top. Islands of the future As long as you are the sounds are no less rich for this character, all big warbling synths and vocal-adjacent missives throughout. It’s a pleasant listen.

While testing the 7-inch functionality of the automatic mechanism, I went for an early 80s groover. Emergency (dial 999) by Loose Ends (a DJ set staple, and an undeniable bop at that – fight me). This proved to be a great way to recognize the strengths of the PS-LX3BT’s built-in phono preamp. Often in budget turntables these can be flimsy or a little clunky; this one is clear and full, making those standout snare drums and vocal refrains pop with rewarding detail.

The whole band seems to favor guitars and vocals above all else, even if everything seems, to some extent, present and complete; That of Ryuichi Sakamoto Riskfeaturing Iggy Pop, is a sparse arrangement benefiting from Iggy’s attempt at playing a Let’s dance-era impression of Bowie – his voice is a raspy little joy all the time, but delivered here to good effect.

Despite discreetly good sound quality, the aptX adaptive Bluetooth connectivity is arguably the star of the show. It’s quick to connect, and when it comes to fidelity, the sound is indistinguishable from its analog alternative. I had a wonderful time in the kitchen listening to Mitski’s Nothing’s about to happen to mein all its full, heartbreaking, no-fuss glory.

Taking the PS-LX3BT out of the box, I found the chassis to be quite light. Surprisingly light, even. As I put it together, it became clear that almost every element was some form of plastic, with the exception of appearance s occasional and die-cast aluminum tray. It’s not a reassuring weight, although the turntable is undeniably stable on its feet.

I’m more disappointed by the noticeable low price of the construction on display here. A series of design decisions were made prioritizing cost over user experience, leading to a fairly unpleasant finish on the chassis shell, a flimsy armrest clasp that doesn’t actually close, and a spring-loaded tonearm that inspires little confidence.

At least the LX3BT is an easy thing to set up – as simple as putting on the platter strap, plugging in an AC adapter, and feeding the stereo RCA cable hardwired to your amp or speaker of choice. It couldn’t be more plug-and-play, nor more foolproof to use via its clearly labeled knobs and buttons.

Once again, the Sony PS-LX3BT’s best feature seems to be its Bluetooth. While many other devices struggle unduly with one-touch connection, connecting this turntable to my portable speaker was the easiest time of my life; a simple press of a button, a minimum of patient waiting with the speaker held (camply) in hand, and it was paired.

This aptX Adaptive connectivity can also be used simultaneously with the analog outputs of the PS-LX3BT. This means two-zone listening; I was able to enjoy high-resolution Mitski in the kitchen while my wife also wandered around the living room. And once again, it sounded great! A design decision with positive side effects, which suits the Sony LX3BT well for casual listening at home.

Sony PS-LX3BT review: Value

• Entry-level vinyl turntable with exceptional sound…

To be completely frank, I find it difficult to compare its price to its own quality, let alone the standards set by other turntable brands. It’s the high end of the entry level, and yet it has the same unfriendly design principles as the cheap and cheerful ten-cent turntables it’s supposed to outclass.

The caveat is that ultimately it achieves its fundamental goals. This is an automatic turntable, and it indeed automates much of the process of playing the turntable – also mostly successfully. This is a Bluetooth-enabled turntable, and its Bluetooth just works, which is something you can’t say for some other devices. And despite all that, it looks pretty darn decent.

But these are all things that turntables a third cheaper can offer. You deserve way more for $400/£300 than a brand logo; if you allow it, that same amount of investment could buy you a solid turntable that delivers better sound and gives you the keys to the kingdom vis à vis calibration and repairs as well.

Here, it’s worth acknowledging that, in the weeks since the LX3BT launched, there appears to have been some sort of post-launch price adjustment; many outlets sell it for $348/£250 or even a little less. This makes the turntable a much more palatable investment prospect, but I think my criticisms are valid – and that other turntables have responded to the moment a little better.

The Sony PS-LX3BT spent about a month atop my living room stereo, as my primary means of listening to records. As such, its output was processed by a Cambridge Audio A2 integrated amplifier, which itself powered a pair of Dali Sonik 1 bookshelf speakers.

Bluetooth connectivity was tested with my trusty kitchen speaker, a Soundcore Motion 300. For testing, I listened to a wide variety of favorite records across all genres, to get a complete idea of ​​the LX3BT’s performance.
